I;ve only seen Erol DJ twice. The first was a largely electrotechnoize bollocks set, which completely didnt work after Fithy Dukes had played a great set of current pop/dance/club hits (actual songs! varied beats!).

The second was in a Turkish Restaurant in Dalston, and Erol was amazing - he played tracks across genres/decades/languages - I remember losing it to Laura Branigan's "Self Control" - like a much more relaxed 2 Many DJs set. In this guise he was awesome.

That Simon Bookish remix is AMAZING. It's weird, he's been around forever but in the past couple of years his music just seems to have gone exponential in terms of quality. Also really liked that Boy 8-Bit song. Need to look up more of his stuff although that pains me.

Was that at the Stone Cave? That might have been a Disco 3000 set, but yeah. It's like he's two different people. You catch one set and it's Turkish prog one minute and some obscure disco edit the next and then a Manics B-side from 1994 as remixed by Stereolab. And then you see him in a big tent and it's CRAP. I don't get it.

Yeah in the Stone Cave - two years ago ( i think ) (first Land of Kings - or as I call it "Lords Of Dalston". fest).

And I guess, the lesson is only see Erol when its billed as "Disco3000"?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 09:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Or "Beyond the Wizards Sleeve" (though that will involve Richard Norris as well - which to me is an added bonus) or if he specifically says he's gonna play "weird stuff."

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 10:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The Bugged Out (London branch) backroom era was when he played bits of electro noise aswell as hits. There was never any noise as such @ Trash aside from the odd electro track.

Just before the release of their highly anticipated debut album ‘We Can’t Fly’ Belgian duo Aeroplane have decided to go their separate ways. Aeroplane will now continue as a solo effort for Vito De Luca while ex-partner Stephen Fasano moves on to other projects. Of the split De Luca said, “It’s quite simple, Aeroplane has existed a little less than three years but me and Stephen have been working together for eight. During this time we’ve started projects, stopped them, and started new ones. Aeroplane was on of these projects. The reason why it’s me taking care of Aeroplane is I’m more the studio guy and I’ve been really busy with the album. There’s no anger, no fight, it’s all cool. It may seem strange doing this just before the album appears but we could either do it now or after the album, we couldn’t do it in the middle. If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal, but we decided the album can be the start of what Aeroplane’s going to be from now on.”

Oh, man. :-(

OK, it does make sense, because the studio guy/club DJ guy dichotomy was beginning to become more apparent. But it's still a bit sucky.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:29 (thirteen years ago) link

they must fcking hate each other to do that pre debut LP.

jed_, Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Thank goodness we're still getting that album though.

get the fuck out of my mouth (boxedjoy), Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think it's "fucking hate each other" so much as "one dude likes to stay home and muck about with his synths while the other likes to jet around the world playin' records and sippin' cocktails with Erol and Alex Ridha" which are not really compatible lifestyles for two dudes trying to promote a record.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Doubt this will make much difference at all tbh.

Man.. they seemed to be getting along just fine @ Clique last month...

Vito on the right I think.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:31 (thirteen years ago) link

How, if at all, is this affecting their lined-up dates etc?

get the fuck out of my mouth (boxedjoy), Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Already knowing that I'd never pay money to see Erol Alkan, how are AEROPLANE's sets?

If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal

what does this mean? like two years of touring after the album?

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Mm i think that's the idea. The only precedent i can think of for this in my lifetime is Thieves/ Mcalmont's album. Album was already in the can, rave reviews for their early singles, massive press hype.. then the 2of them split and the album became a solo project.

I'm not sure that's the case here - Vito's the one with the production background and Stephen w/ the DJ background, but Stephen's the one leaving. And Vito seems to be the one who enjoys playing out and touring more, based on seeing and talking to them in March.

I DIED, Thursday, 17 June 2010 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm guessing nerd with the glasses is the bedroom producer type and dude with the trendy beard is the jetsetter?

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 17 June 2010 23:34 (thirteen years ago) link

nah, I think Vito is the guy with the great goofy grin in the Clique gallery:

gutted - I can't go to see them on the 26th in Brixton due to other engagements. Probably be the last time I get a chance.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2010 10:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know if this interview was posted anywhere upthread. I looked and didn't find it.

bmus, Friday, 18 June 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost - thanks; enjoyed reading that interview

this bit = !! wow!

VD: We shouldn’t say this, but we actually sent it to a blog: “You can have this.” I think 25 minutes and that fucking remix was everywhere. And the label really liked it, even when she turned it down. We were like, “Can you listen to that remix properly, like in a studio with a big sound system?” So they played it to her fully, and she said OK. And she actually called me in the middle of the night. I didn’t get the phone, like, “Who the hell is that? I’m not answering it.” And in the morning I hear the voice mail: “This is Grace Jones ….” I was like, “What?” I fucked up.

Also, to the comments they make about their attitude to blogs/etc makes me feel more at ease with throwing this up again for the weekend.

"We Can't Fly" is on Spotify.
I am underwhelmed!

mike t-diva, Thursday, 1 July 2010 09:52 (thirteen years ago) link

The track or the LP?

du mein bestie (micarl), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i was also underwhelmed. it sounds like a cheap imitation of aeroplane. that synth sound that comes in a third of the way through is sort of horrible.

i'm...not sure their forte was ever producing their own material? "whispers" apart, and it was kathy diamond who made that...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Nonsense - Caramellas and Pacific Air Race were both brilliant, and the best bits of most of their remixes were their own, as well.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost: Two versions of the track. In its favour, it's all a bit Summer 1981/Compass Point/Alex Sadkin/Sly&Robbie, which always plays well with me - with a touch of 1982 Swain/Jolley/Imagination squelchy bass for good measure - but it lacks that subtly intense and blissful OOMPH that they normally do so well.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 1 July 2010 12:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sort of thinking of it as a prolonged intro to the album really, it's nice and breezy and does its job pretty well.
