Yeah ... I guess trying to figure out your affiliation based on whoever you're arbitrarily killing at the time could get tricky, but even a simple 'firebomb/don't firebomb' choice during that first mission at the rebel village would have been welcome.

Didn't MGS4 have some kind of system where you could blend in with various factions? I was thinking something like that, I guess. It would just be so awesome to turn around and murder every last one of those firebombing rapist motherfuckers, just wipe em all out, get on your horse and hightail it, and have somebody ride up beside you and say "we want to talk to you.. follow me" and suddenly you're doing rebel missions instead of army ones. I mean yes eventually you do hook up with Reyes and start killing army dudes but it's something that just happens to you instead of you making a decision. I guess that's what seems weird, for all the "free will" of an open world game there's a surprising lack of consequential decisions you get to make.

With the firebombing mission one of the soldiers sticks around to examine the wreckage after the mission, so I just shot him and ran off and got away with it. If you try that with the later one where you get a sniper rifle you get swarmed by about 300 pissed off army guys and get a massive bounty and die.

sucks after you've just spent all morning killing wolves

Huge lolz last night - I wandered up to that little cave where West Dickens lives, and found him stood there rambling away to himself while pissing onto his own bed. Went a bit closer to try and get a better look (yes, I was looking for his winkie), but accidentally bumped into him, which caused him to fall face first into his own pissy matress and lie there shouting about what a bastard I was.

JimD, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:41 (thirteen years ago) link

While still pissing, btw.

JimD, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:42 (thirteen years ago) link

While galloping down the open road, I quite enjoy running up the back of small wagons. Sometimes they fall over.

took me like 10 minutes to catch this guy and then he tumbled off the cliff. i had him like a marionette but sadly couldn't do anything.

I firebombed that guy, it felt so right.

i just handed escuela over to the mysterious bowler-hatted city boys who, it is intimated, have me over a barrel.

blew quite a bit of dough on a couple of better guns, only to have two guns even better than those show up in my inventory mysteriously. i have no idea how i got them.

i tried getting my money back from the opium dealer but fucked it up.

i helped the "judicial" clear out the town, then we both went upstairs to confront the gang leader and the stupid fucking "judicial" steps right in front of my sawed-off and gets two shells full in the face. "the judicial has died". i guess i'm not getting 100%!

i just knew they were going to make reyes a dick somehow. ah look, he's actually an elitist aristocrat! just like all those fuckin lefties amirite? love all his troops holding their guns aloft and shouting "may hee COE!!! may hee COE!! may hee COE!!" like they're at a wrestling match.

it was kind of weird that reyes stops fucking his girl immediately when marston walks in the room. i don't know but if that was me i'd be like uh, can you get lost for a while, marston? i guess everybody's got a boner for john marston. including the obviously gay/bi de santo, who you get to brutally beat (ostensibly to get information about escuela, even though reyes has promised you the information anyway) and then even get the opportunity to plug between the fucking eyes, as he squirms helplessly beneath you! fucking weird. i walked away. did anyone here blow his big gay brains out?

re: opium dealer i guess it wasn't "my" money exactly, heh heh

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 11:31 (thirteen years ago) link

still haven't robbed a bank, am i missing anything?

i finally decided to check out the "stats" page.. it certainly seems that one could have some box-ticking fun with how many crimes one could commit...

another question - i've got a few bounties put on my head, rode like wildfire to evade the cops, never paid them off.. and they appear to have just sort of disappeared? i thought bounties were forever. if not, why does anyone bother to pay them off?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 11:36 (thirteen years ago) link

they will come back for sure. I find they usually come @ twilight and usually around a town. Then it's 20 minutes of riding to escape. I actually paid off a 120$ bounty and it actually felt like a good decision

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 11:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm up to about $900 of wantedness, I find it's quicker and easier to just kill any police who decide to start chasing me, rather than outrunning them. They don't seem to respawn that regularly anyway.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link

ahh i'm not playin that way though. honor is my badge.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:17 (thirteen years ago) link

JimD, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:19 (thirteen years ago) link

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

what's all this about armoires anyway, btw? Are we actually talking about armories?

JimD, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:29 (thirteen years ago) link

You've started convincing me, it must be said.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:41 (thirteen years ago) link

They're like French wardrobes - very popular in wild Western times.

finally got to play this last night, good stuff. how are you supposed to subdue people (at least before getting a lasso)? i would try using my fists and either die or accidentally beat them to death anyway, or them shooting in the legs. a couple times it gave me the "mission complete" flag while they were still alive (but injured), and i would start walking away only to have them shoot me in the back.

the horseshoes game is strangely addictive.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i have never played horseshoes or arm wrestling.

don't understand liar's dice

the knife/fingers game is just stupid

J0rdan i don't think you really can do much subduing without the lasso TBH. sometimes drawing your gun and firing it can be enough to break up fights.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i don't really get liar's dice. which makes me think i should give up on any hopes of becoming half decent at poker (irl).

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

you can shoot dudes in the leg, don't know if that counts as "subduing"

I don't understand liar's dice either

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the way to win (in the one game you have to play to complete a mission) is to just keep yr bets way low and wait for the others to get stupid.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, that's basically it. liar's dice is really easy. i don't think i've lost an actual game once (and won a number of them without losing a single die). just consider how likely their bets are and call them on it, and try to never lie if you can help it. half the time they'll make an obvious bluff and half the time they'll call you when you've got the dice.

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought i would know how to play poker but i was wrong. i just kept calling until i had more money that i started with and then quit, never to return.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 13:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Only played Liar's Dice once, didn't feel like there was much to understand. It's just one of those 80% luck/20% skill games, I don't think there's any magic secret to it or anything.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the secret is to never lie. also if you find a table with only 1 or 2 guys it's easier

goole, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

i looked up some real-world strategy stuff for blackjack and poker and it seemed to work out pretty well

goole, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

are there ever any challenges to clean out a whole table at poker? pretty sure i could do it but i never have the patience.

also, is there any point to getting outfits? i like my baja and frankly the idea of wandering around sidewinder gulch just so i can look like a fucking "bandito" doesn't exactly thrill the pants off me

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I would compromise on some graphics to make the controls more responsive

there's an achievement for winning some hueg amount of chips in one hand. if you care.

some of the outfits give you some other minor benefit. and they're all required for 100%. again, if you care.

goole, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

now that I've beaten this I am COMPLETELY DONE; no interest in clothes or achievements or even online. Great fun while it lasted but man, when you burn out you really burn out

this was confusing. giving him his money was a plus to honor, huh?

I got a goddamn royal flush in poker on this the other day.. Proud moment.

mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never played arm wrestling as every time I've gone to a table there's never anybody there. I assume it's the same or similar to arm wrestling in Lost & Damned?

I quite like Liar's Dice and Blackjack though there's nothing to them really. They get boring quickly.

Born too beguiled (DavidM), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

arm wrestling is more fun in this than in L&D

man i need to up my game at deathmatch.

also realised today that in all gta games i always push the stick forward when walking/running/riding, even though you just have to press a/x to move forwards. kind of unintentional and dumb but it actually makes the controls less twitchy and turning easier, imo.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

same here - which also means that very often I push left stick in unintentionally and start crouching. very annoying as it usually happens in the middle of combat panic mode (had exactly the same problem in GTA)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 07:34 (thirteen years ago) link

So I've been doing it wrong all this time? Thanks for the heads up!

Bill E, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 10:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Both work though. You can just push forward and not even touch the buttons if you just want standard speed strolling/trotting.

JimD, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 10:32 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't like the pressing button to move, far too sensitive when turning.

ei ei oh (Ste), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 10:35 (thirteen years ago) link

well that's what i was saying, if you push the stick forward as well then you can turn more accurately.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link

haha i do this ALL THE TIME. like quick, john marsten, jump on my stagecoach! "ok!!" CROUCH
