I'm sure I voted for the first album. My view of Iron Maiden will be forever colored by the TV bit with the headbanging competition and the live stuff from their "thank you" tour of small clubs after the release of their debut record. It's in black and white, I think that more than one of its elements was lampooned in Spinal Tap. But the Phantom in that bit destroyed me. It's a bonus feature on a Maiden two dvd set.

Trip Maker, Friday, 11 June 2010 00:27 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a great record, but come on - 15 for the debut vs. 8 for beast and only 3 (!) for piece of mind? it's crazy!

Some surprising results, these.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 11 June 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I think we need a re-poll. seventh son only getting 1 vote? their most consistent album imo.

I'm just glad killers beat out number of the beast, that's enough justice for me

one month passes...

st*ve hu*y from allmusic can kiss my ass: "The weakest album from Iron Maiden's classic ‘80s period, Somewhere in Time is really the first true disappointment in their catalog, too often collapsing under the weight of their now-trademark ambition."

That's bullshit, maaaan. I've been re-listening to all the 80s Maiden stuff lately and this album still kicks ass. Seventh Son to me is where they fell off with some really bad songs. Can I Play With Madness blows with its catchy sing-song chorus. maybe the sort of retrospective lyrical themes in 'Somewhere' just resonate with me more. or that they didn't go crazy with the 80s synths like they did on Seventh Son. I get that these two albums were pretty O_o to Maiden fans back then.. like borderline selling out or w/e, but Somewhere sounds great now.

Also I think it's time for another poll.. well maybe after the new one is widely heard.

man i like dianno and all but these results are a challops of the beast

Are you really surprised that a bunch of older ilxors prefer the nwobhm era?

If there's another poll, how about excluding the Dianno stuff?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

man i dunno, like i really dig the first album...dianno's got a kinda cool, more gutbucket 70s rock vibe to him, but to me, it's like damn dickenson is the man

also agreed about somewhere in time, which i totally love

See, I'm more a Dianno man. But not because I was into them at the time (i was like 7), I just like that more punky style.

Killers > Iron Maiden > Piece of Mind > Number of the Beast > Powerslave > Somewhere In Time > Seventh Son > all that other crap.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 00:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Powerslave > The Number of the Beast > A Matter of Life and Death > Somewhere in Time > Seventh Son of a Seventh Son > everything else

(I don't like the studio versions of the Piece of Mind songs, though I love 'em on Live After Death.)

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 00:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Number of the Beast > Powerslave > Somewhere In Time > Piece of Mind > Seventh Son > Brave New World...everything else.

Love the D'Ianno albums but total, utter challops to put them ahead of Beast or Powerslave. I feel like they're a separate conversation, great as that stuff is. It's cool and it's punky and raw but it's also, well, it's not-yet Maiden. Like Priest when they were hippies...its not quite them, at least in my mind. For me, Dickinson gave Maiden their "Maiden-ness"...he's the only pilot that can fly the twin guitar attack plane :)

Blaze is ick.

I have to put Beast first because Clive <3. and Hallowed Be Thy Name. But Powerslave is almost tied for first bc it roolz :)

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think so little of No Prayer For the Dying and Fear of the Dark that I'd actually rank the Blaze era marginally ahead of those records.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I still have to re-listen to all of their earlier albums, but I guess mine would be Powerslave or Somewhere in Time > Number of the Beast > Matter of Life and Death > Seventh Son > earlier stuff, with Live after Death way the hell up there if we were including live albums.

Agree with Veg about Dickinson giving Maiden their Maiden-ness. He's probably also the reason I have never had a friend who shared my love of this band.

richie aprile (rockapads), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

1980-88, I like 'em all, Paul or Bruce.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Killers>Live After Death>Iron Maiden>Number of the Beast>Piece of Mind>Powerslave>whatever else, because I'm not going to listen to it instead of any of these.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 03:11 (thirteen years ago) link

poll results is still crazy. number of the beast and piece of mind are each miles better than the debut, but they only got only 2/3 as many votes combined? fish ay.

number of the beast = piece of mind > killers > powerslave > iron maiden > somewhere in time ... etc

I think this poll is decent, not how I would have them ordered, but decent.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

poll results wouldn't be so nutso if, say, number of the beast swapped ranking with the s/t.

killers = number of the beast = powerslave > somewhere in time > iron maiden > piece of mind > seventh son > some other stuff

xp
80's Maiden >>>>>>> all other Maiden = pretty much an OTM result

am i right in thinking the 1st 2 albums are much more popular with brits than americans?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Killers is the favorite of most of the Americans, I know. Admittedly it wasn't the consensus favorite when I was a kid (except the cover, of course, it was agreed that was probably their best) that was probably Number or Powerslave.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Same here; either Killers or Number of the Beast are tops amongst my friends.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

most people I know rep for powerslave above the rest

I doubt it.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link

despite my previous rallying for beast in this thread, i'd probably opt for powerslave these days. it just seems to be the maiden album with the most... balls.

i recently attempted to listen to virtual XI as a joke or endurance test or whatever you want to call it. utterly pitiful. a band apparently incapable of cobbling together a decent riff (as maiden were at that point) has no business penning 10-minute songs.

charlie h, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

You cant really go wrong with either Beast or Powerslave for tops from the Dickinson years.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

That's why my go to Dickinson is Live After Death - best of both and more.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:00 (thirteen years ago) link

so, this thread got me a little curious about re-visiting the blaze stuff. best thing I found on that little journey was a brandy song that samples "the clansman":

Killers is one of the ten best rock & roll albums ever. I'll stack it against any Rolling Stones album.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:49 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, same, but i wouldn't say any less for number of the beast, powerslave, piece of mind. it's not like killers = unique in kicking glimmer twin ass...

(you know, or at least measuring up)

Piece of Mind for me -- their tightest musical album.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost - Yeah good point. I guess I just not only prefer Paul to Bruce, but I also strongly prefer Clive to Nicko. They could actually swing on Killers. And with Beast, they lost the groove forever after.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

(Even though I know Clive was on Beast)

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

the paul vs bruce thing can never be won, neither side will change opinions now.

love that brandy track

We really should repoll this. I loved Number of the Beast more than anything back in the day, though Powerslave was my intro to Maiden so it holds a place in my heart.

President Keyes, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

we should poll the maiden vocalists!

charlie h, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

and Maiden drummers!

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

can you guys wait til after the alltime metal poll and I'll do this poll again?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:15 (thirteen years ago) link

NO DO IT NOW

/joeks, we can wait.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

cool. Will do it in a few weeks, but feel free to vote for your fave maiden in the alltime poll meanwhile.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link

paul's fine and all but I can't even fathom placing him above bruce. in my eyes that's like picking the generic rocker dude on half of the first steely dan album over fagen.
