James Corden stands for an awful lot of things that I despise, mainly bullying 'funny' ladism. I loathe his face, his manner, and even the shortest trailers for that f'ing Question of Sport thing that he does is enough to make me wallow in bitter misanthropy for the rest of the day. But seeing him in One Man, Two Guv'nors yesterday had me crying with laughter, admiring his wit, geniality and sensitivity to an audience, his immense capacity for genuinely funny clowning and physical humour. Yes, you could say that he's a good actor, which obscures the less palatable public personality, but it's not as simple as that; the play is clearly directed around James Corden - he's required numerous times to rely on his personality and stores of, to me generally non-existant, charm., and yet it was completely winning. Mysterious.

this show is pretty awful, isn't it? it's obvious that CBS got exactly what they wanted -- a show aping Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show. only lacking Fallon's modestly redeeming qualities of earnestness and awkwardness. the result feels not just dumb but cynical.
corden has no evident rapport with reggie watts, an interesting and talented guy whose role on this show could be assumed by just about anyone (indeed, the best thing about the show is its theme tune). the band giggles on cue when corden makes one of his mirthless quips, but it's evidently forced.
the group discussion seldom pays dividents, since usually the conversation descends to the level of the lowest common denominator (which is often corden himself; witness his embarrassing refusal to talk to michael douglas about anything other than "basic instinct").
i was getting tired of craig ferguson's schtick by the end--and even complained that he was a smart guy who was deliberately playing that down--but boy do i miss him.
on the other hand, i get to sleep earlier these days.

It's less Jimmy Fallon and more like a dumbed down version of Graham Norton (if that's even possible) for US network late night. I've only watched it 3 or 4 times so far, but he seems to know a lot of really famous people, or really famous people are comfortable around him at least. It's weird.
Maybe when they cancel him, Scott Thompson will finally get looked at for a hosting gig.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 May 2015 06:24 (eight years ago) link
how are his ratings? even if he isn't doing well, I suspect CBS will probably keep him on for a few years.
one strange thing about the show is that somebody (corden? his producers? CBS?) seems to have decided that they should act as though the show has been around for a while. there's little reflexive acknowledgment that the show is new, segments are unfamiliar, etc. the confidence that reviewers noted seems to add to the show's feeling of slick indifference.
the biggest problem, though, is just corden's witlessness.
― he quipped with heat (amateurist), Friday, 1 May 2015 06:46 (eight years ago) link
i guess it's just too bad that soon the only laid-back genuine talk show on network late night may be seth fucking meyers. he's a total talentless nonentity--i've yet to meet anyone who has expressed even the slightest bit of enthusiasm for his show. it's soporific. but all the other shows seem to be more "variety show" than "talk show."
― he quipped with heat (amateurist), Friday, 1 May 2015 06:48 (eight years ago) link
I'm still fond of Fallon, though I appreciated the less formalized Late Night more than I do his Tonight Show. Everything about Seth Meyers' show is awful, though, from the monologue to the band to the scripted bits. Even the set sucks (still, even after a redesign). Come September, Stephen Colbert will be the oldest host with an 11:37 show, but even he seems like more of a gamesman than modern day Letterman. He should be a decent interviewer now that he no longer has to do it in character, though.

corden was pretty much loathed over in the uk by everyone except mainstream tv execs (could anyone say they were a fan of this guy?) so here's hoping america completely destroys him. 'mirthless' and lowest common denominator sums him up perfectly, just a dumb hateful guy who doesn't even pay lip service to 'smart'.
