Rapey nanorobot = all that hyper-aggressive Boys Noize type "BANG BANG BANG no subtlety no dimension ARGH did he just manage to play a Major Lazer remix that was even WORSE than the original? god make it STOP my head my head" crap that he plays when he does big shows. It's like... take Justice's most annoying song (and hey, I like Justice) and run it through bitcrusher. (Yeah, I said Death Suite sounded like being fuX0red to death by angry nanorobots and he took it as a COMPLIMENT so that's the kind of thing you're dealing with yuck yuck yuck.)

The complete opposite of the Aeroplane aesthetic, mind you, so I don't know why I'm talking about it here. Sorry.

Erol didn't play all this nanorobot stuff when he DJd at Trash did he? What was the point where he moved from DJing melodic song based stuff into this hard dance sound?

Oh, Erol has some bug up his arse about wanting to keep the whole "Trash aesthetic" pure (of, you know, playing an interesting mixture of all kinds of music, indie and pop and dance etc. - you know, what he got famous for?) and not export it or do it at Festivals and big gigs because that would, like, compromise his art or his brand or something. I have no idea as to this reasoning, because he gets really defensive and bitchy if you actually ask him about it.

I dunno, it's just weird that he would spend so long cultivating this whole distinctive and exclusive... *thing* with Trash (though I've shot my mouth off on this messageboard before about that, and the whole "dress codes and bouncers" bullshit) and then so gleefully dismantle and destroy it under the guise of "protecting" it.

But, I guess if I were in his position, and I found myself suddenly playing to thousands of exactly the kind of knobs who used to beat up the people who went to "my" club, then I might get protective and insular about "my" music as well. Or something.

I suppose it's his version of "playing all the single a-sides" at Wembley, and "doing the b-sides" at Dingwalls. (a'la Blur)

I know which gig I'd rather go to, but ask the genpop and they'd say different. I guess...

It wasn't Dingwalls, it was the Electric Ballroom. And I know, because I was at that gig. (And Wembley as well, mind you.)

So aside from the 'Trash brand' stuff, Erol played *some* of this noisy hard stuff at Trash and then decided that was the sound that would work in big clubs/festivals? (Not true surely: 2ManyDJs, Aeroplane, Villa etc all manage a great crowdpleasing mix of non-earbleed danceable songs.)

I'd love to read his thoughts and reasoning on it all as it seems crazy to take his wide-ranging and ectastic DJing style then cut it all down to 90% pummelling technonoize. I caught his set over the weekend and it was the usual relentless beats until the Atrak remix of YYYs whereupon the tent went crazy, camera flashes everywhere, people singing along, really going for it, then another 20 minutes of angry techno and nodding heads. Is it just a drug thing? It clearly works as he's headlining bills everywhere, I just don't *get* it.

This doesn't apply to his BTWS and Disco 3000 sets btw, one of my favourite clubbing experiences of the past few years was dancing in a half-full sideroom to this.

I reckon that after 45 minutes of the rapey nosebleed nanorobot shit, people are so freaking RELIEVED to hear some electro banger they recognise that they go nuts.

But anyway, this is an Aeroplane thread, not an Erol thread. I will get back on topic by saying I just listened to Erol's last 6mix and he played a new(?) Aeroplane remix. And it had awful Van Halen's Jump keyboards on it. The end.

I;ve only seen Erol DJ twice. The first was a largely electrotechnoize bollocks set, which completely didnt work after Fithy Dukes had played a great set of current pop/dance/club hits (actual songs! varied beats!).

The second was in a Turkish Restaurant in Dalston, and Erol was amazing - he played tracks across genres/decades/languages - I remember losing it to Laura Branigan's "Self Control" - like a much more relaxed 2 Many DJs set. In this guise he was awesome.

That Simon Bookish remix is AMAZING. It's weird, he's been around forever but in the past couple of years his music just seems to have gone exponential in terms of quality. Also really liked that Boy 8-Bit song. Need to look up more of his stuff although that pains me.

Was that at the Stone Cave? That might have been a Disco 3000 set, but yeah. It's like he's two different people. You catch one set and it's Turkish prog one minute and some obscure disco edit the next and then a Manics B-side from 1994 as remixed by Stereolab. And then you see him in a big tent and it's CRAP. I don't get it.

Yeah in the Stone Cave - two years ago ( i think ) (first Land of Kings - or as I call it "Lords Of Dalston". fest).

And I guess, the lesson is only see Erol when its billed as "Disco3000"?

Or "Beyond the Wizards Sleeve" (though that will involve Richard Norris as well - which to me is an added bonus) or if he specifically says he's gonna play "weird stuff."

The Bugged Out (London branch) backroom era was when he played bits of electro noise aswell as hits. There was never any noise as such @ Trash aside from the odd electro track.

Aeroplane will now continue as a solo effort for Vito De Luca while ex-partner Stephen Fasano moves on to other projects. Of the split De Luca said, “It’s quite simple, Aeroplane has existed a little less than three years but me and Stephen have been working together for eight. During this time we’ve started projects, stopped them, and started new ones. Aeroplane was on of these projects. The reason why it’s me taking care of Aeroplane is I’m more the studio guy and I’ve been really busy with the album. There’s no anger, no fight, it’s all cool. It may seem strange doing this just before the album appears but we could either do it now or after the album, we couldn’t do it in the middle. If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal, but we decided the album can be the start of what Aeroplane’s going to be from now on.”

I don't think it's "fucking hate each other" so much as "one dude likes to stay home and muck about with his synths while the other likes to jet around the world playin' records and sippin' cocktails with Erol and Alex Ridha" which are not really compatible lifestyles for two dudes trying to promote a record.

Doubt this will make much difference at all tbh.

Mm i think that's the idea. The only precedent i can think of for this in my lifetime is Thieves/ Mcalmont's album. Album was already in the can, rave reviews for their early singles, massive press hype.. then the 2of them split and the album became a solo project.

I'm not sure that's the case here - Vito's the one with the production background and Stephen w/ the DJ background, but Stephen's the one leaving. And Vito seems to be the one who enjoys playing out and touring more, based on seeing and talking to them in March.

And the label really liked it, even when she turned it down. We were like, “Can you listen to that remix properly, like in a studio with a big sound system?” So they played it to her fully, and she said OK. And she actually called me in the middle of the night. I didn’t get the phone, like, “Who the hell is that? I’m not answering it.” And in the morning I hear the voice mail: “This is Grace Jones ….” I was like, “What?” I fucked up.

Also, to the comments they make about their attitude to blogs/etc makes me feel more at ease with throwing this up again for the weekend.
