Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

love all of these. no idea about the album quality, but the covers make me want to own all of them.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The Frisell is very good; the Zappas with Panter covers (there are three of them) and Zorn's Spy vs. Spy are all great.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

WmC, i know SLEEP DIRT is by Panter too, what's the third one?

Not so keen on this one:

Ward - Orchestral Favorites

http://diskoduck.cz/shop/images/ORCHESTRAL%20FAVORITES.jpg

I don't know how easy these are to find -- that "Warner Bros. Litigation Trilogy" has sort of been supplanted by the Läther box set.

Ward Fowler, who are those album covers by, I have no idea? (Except for the Grateful Dead cover, which must be by Gilbert Shelton.) The "Man from Utopia" cover looks like it's by that Italian guy who did Ranxerox, can't remember his name.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, okay, Wikipedia confirms that it is indeed by Tanino Liberatore.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Man from Utopia is indeed Liberatore. Zorn's Spy vs. Spy is by Mark Beyer. The Frisell album is Jim Woodring, and there is quite a bit of his art on it, with an outer slipcase along with the booklet and tray art. The Groundhogs looks like (rushed, cruddy) Neal Adams.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, duh -- I'm not going to link to any because I'm lazy, but there are a bunch of Frazetta covers out there. Molly Hatchet, et al.

This one is none-more-Ware in person, not only does it fold out into an oversized cartographoic artefact, but the booklet is a tiny faux-newspaper tucked inside

my vanished one upthread was McKean on the soundtrack to The Piano btw

when I met one ilx0r for the first time, I squinted at the tat on her arm and said "Jim Woodring?" She was amused that I'd picked that rather than recognising the source:

ha yeah I know Camp is better known for animation but I really like that cover.

I have another Dame Darcy cover for a Kittywinder CD, but this 7" is the only one the internet knows about (and is enormous)

too enormous to post apparently

BIG SAUS aka the porkbanger (sic), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I couldn't find it on-line, but I am pretty sure Jack Davis did a portrait of Anthrax back in the 80s.

earlnash, Friday, 11 June 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

it was by mort drucker, but i can only find this teeny version online:

http://images.auctionworks.com/hi/44/44048/anthrax88_89tb.jpg

Ward Fowler, Friday, 11 June 2010 05:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Too obvious?

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/1808/gorillazr.jpg

The booklet from Eels "Electroshock Blues" featured cartoons by Adrian Tomine, Chester Brown, Seth, and Debbie Dreschler. But can I find a scan anywhere online? Can I heck. I've only got the cassette version here, and they're all tiny and barely legible.

Pheeel, Friday, 11 June 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

That's cheating, probably, but this one with the same drummer isn't:

BIG SAUS aka the porkbanger (sic), Saturday, 12 June 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

and you reminded me, Eels blokey also used Brunetti on this:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/kitbrash/49290.jpg?t=1276302930

and Tomine on this:

Another one that might be too obvious to post but so what

Richard Corben:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/00/Bat_out_of_Hell.jpg

Chips Moleman (los blue jeans), Saturday, 12 June 2010 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow...that one is a mind blower in a way, I don't think I had ever put 2 and 2 together to realize 'Bat out of Hell' was done by Corben. I got that Groundhogs album by Adams back in the 80s because it was drawn by Adams only much much later to come to dig their music.

note that Quitely and Morrison did the entire booklet for that Bob W album, not just the cover

Just looked up Phantom Band out of curiosity and they're dull as only a Scottish indie band can be.

Lol at this one:

Did McFarlane just give the band an unused piece of Spawn art, or did they specifically want Spawn to be on their album cover?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 08:20 (ten years ago) link

The Dark Saga is a concept album based on the Todd McFarlane comic book character Spawn

Wikipedia says the cover was designed by someone called Mark Kostabi, can't find any info that he ever was a comic book artist?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 11:41 (ten years ago) link

think Nick prob means Appetite for Destruction, which had a Robert Williams painting on the cover, tho iirc the painting existed before the alb, so doesn't count under sic's 'no satriani' ruling

^ Hunt Emerson also did this painting which probably falls foul of the sic clause, but he did these pictures that got used on various records too:

Jim Woodring's first record cover was for the Christmas album Vortex.

Ed Brubaker did a cover for a San Diego band called Field Trip in around '91.

P Craig Russell has done several covers for the new music label Bridge Records, including a couple of stunners in their George Crumb series.

Pressgang Wolf (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

Woodring did the critter on the front of El Oso by Soul Coughing, but not the design, I assume

Suehiro Maruo did lots of japanese punk albums, I think some John Zorn too. Awesome stuff.
http://www.kurutta.com/2009/04/suehiro-maruos-cd-covers.html

Danzig and Rob Zombie got a lot of comic artists to do their covers. Joe Chiodo, Simon Bisley, Gene Colan and more.

I'm sure that guy who does dinosaurs and movie concept art did a Who live album cover. Cant remember his name.
