all its lacking is a pitchfork review of the Nachtmystium then we might hit 1000 posts

Actually, the Emeralds thread is gonna take off, based on today's Pfork Best New Music heralding of the new album:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14275-does-it-look-like-im-here

Goes nicely with the Woods BNM 8.3 handed out last year, don't you think? ;-)

All of Herman's favorite bands slowly turning into Pfork relics.

So pitchfork covering something good at last, eh?

Should've taken acid with Nachtmystium.

Guys, our long national nightmare is over. I was able to pick this up at Reckless this morning. I figured I could sacrifice a couple hours of studying for Nachtmystium and Watain.

really hoping they're going to release a Nachtmystium Teaches You The Letters of the Alphabet educational record next

saw them tonight at empty bottle (with bongripper (?), atlas moth (they have great tshirts), yakuza (were AWESOME), and eyehategod (almost got trampled whoops)

some observations:

* opened with "your true enemy" and "ghosts of grace", played "assassins" to close set. also "high on hate" from addicts, and "hellish overdose" from doomsday derelicts. did NOT play "no funeral", "nightfall" or "addicts". maybe waiting for a headlining gig? this was the second night of 2 at this venue.

* sounded really tight and LOUD. loved it. new guys everywhere.

* superficially, i must mention that blake got a serious haircut (not sure if this has happened recently or not) and now looks even more like my puppy. it's a graduated bob, basically. little bit longer in front, pretty short in the back. he was also wearing v tight jeans.

man this is straight trolling

Black metal has been rife with purists since it first emerged as a distinct subculture in Norway in the early 90s, and many of its most devoted fans still insist that it has to come from Scandinavia to be considered "true." Ten years ago this faction was influential enough that American black metal was widely considered a knockoff or even a joke, but today the music's audience is so much larger and more diverse that the zealots no longer have that kind of pull. American bands like Leviathan, Xasthur, and Wolves in the Throne Room are now seen as standard-bearers of the style, in large part because they've departed from its orthodoxies—instead of imitating 20-year-old Emperor records, they're pushing black metal in new directions, coloring it with psychedelia or even prog rock.

let's take it bit by bit

Black metal has been rife with purists since it first emerged as a distinct subculture in Norway in the early 90s,

true

and many of its most devoted fans still insist that it has to come from Scandinavia to be considered "true."

not true, at all - most of the troo kvlt purer-than-pure people will stan for black metal from Russia, France, Slovakia (the Stone), Germany, not to mention the elephant in the room, SOUTH AMERICA, whose black metal is & has always been dear to the kvltest of the kvlt

Ten years ago this faction was influential enough that American black metal was widely considered a knockoff or even a joke,

except that 10 years ago everybody knew Order from Chaos was one of the best black metal bands ever, and Absu's been around forever and was widely respected 10 years ago, and Averse Sefira's first full-length was '99 & they're also well-liked by "purists," and there's also Profantatica/Havohej, and Judas Iscariot who're from fucking DeKalb for Christ's sake...in short, there's been loads of respected U.S. black metal for a long, long time, and the thesis "USBM was not respected" actually maybe means "since casually-interested fans were only noticing/poking fun at Scandinavian bands, those were the only bands of note"

but today the music's audience is so much larger and more diverse that the zealots no longer have that kind of pull.

As just demonstrated, USBM has been around pretty much since the beginning - this whole "zealots kept it down!" idea is an invention

American bands like Leviathan, Xasthur, and Wolves in the Throne Room are now seen as standard-bearers of the style, in large part because they've departed from its orthodoxies—instead of imitating 20-year-old Emperor records, they're pushing black metal in new directions, coloring it with psychedelia or even prog rock.

where to even begin? who was ever imitating which Emperor records, now or previously? etc

aerosmith, what I really wanna know is do you like the new Nachtmystium?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't really care about Nachtymystium enough to hear it - I got Instinct:Decay when people were going nuts about it and was really underwhelmed - it's not like I think it sucked completely but it's just not anything I'm really interested in. Like if a band is "pushing black metal in new directions, coloring it with psychedelia or even prog rock" - cool, hope people enjoy it, as for me, that is exactly what I do not want so I'll pass

oh HOLY SHIT, auto-negate all forms of hate. this is astounding. bought it early today (SO SO LATE I NO), and have been playing the first "LP" for over and over and over and over again. do not hear any goddam fucking joy fucking divisions you piles of shit. only hear awesome-ass pain metal brilliance forever.

i.e. fuck you aerosmith! (not really, but shit, dude, come on...) this is not "pushing black metal in new directions!" this is just awesome-ass goddam HEAVY FUCKING METAL, like people who are not worthless goddam sheeps have been making and enjoying for several decades now. if you do not comprehend this, then you do not like heavy metal and should fuck right the fucking fuck off okay?

i mean, i liked black meddle 1 enuf okay, but this is something else. one of the coolest & bestest shits i've heard in goddam don't know since when. "MY SPELL IS CHEMICAL!" shit. "I'M CURSED AGAIN-uh."

and then guitar

woah contenderizers havin a breakdown itt

markers, Monday, 16 August 2010 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

not a breakdown so much as me being a drunk, drunk, drunk-ass ass. [face of shame] wasn't really trying to draw lines in the sand, just got a bit, uh, overenthusiastic while effuhking plastered - posting @ two AM, note.

and though i enjoyed it at the time, i agree with you, aerosmith. instinct:decay = no great shakes. assassins is better, but the new one (addicts) is leaps and bounds beyond anything they've done prior. great songs, delivery, production, solos, vibe, etc. not any kind of obvious crossover attempt or reinvention of the wheel, either. just a distinctive & memorable metal record.

that is (i think) what i was trying to say the other night...

No talk about Silencing Machine? I just picked this up, and I'm liking it a lot. Great riffs! Gothy!

Contenderizer is effing hilarious in this thread

Clarke B., Wednesday, 10 October 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

Silencing Machine is ok but I don't like it nearly as much as Assassins. I also thought it was "my smell is chemical" which kinda makes sense although it's lol to sing about yr smell imo.
