Everyone's talking about the "trust" part, but what about the "support" aspect?

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:46 (twenty years ago) link

THIS THREAD IS LOVE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

I just want to say that I got your joke, Ronan, and it was quite funny.

The only thing that actively annoys me in this thread is the misogyny claim! Why are you all throwing that in there, wtf? There's more than enough evidence that this board thinks Fred Durst is a retarded child as well, so it's all love here.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

Yay Ally!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

Go Ally! Go Kearney! Go Ally! Go Kearney!

I just don't like extraneous arguments, I mean honestly now.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

lots of killing joke racist bullshit too!!!!!!!!!

sub-trifean at best (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

Another thought: Despite the fact that I suspect anyone who expresses support for President Bush to be somewhat of a FUCKING MORON, I don't necessarily bemoan anyone's right to express their political opinions, so long as they express them with some degree of thought/insight/evidence to suggest an informed examination of the facts. Britney's statement....and let me dust it off and wheel it out one more time....

"Honestly, I think we should just trust our President in every decision that he makes, and we should just support that."

.....just doesn't suggest that she's spent any time familiarizing herself with the topic at hand. Rather, it says to me that she's perfectly happy tow whatever line is handed to her in the interests of maintaining face and insuring a controversy-free career trajectory.

lots of killing joke racist bullshit too!!!!!!!!!

I know that's a joke (no pun intended), but I'm tired of seeing "racist" appear in conjunction with Killing Joke. Say what you want about me, but don't drag the Joke into it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

THE FACT THAT BUSH IS PRESIDENT IS COMPLETELY INCIDENTAL TO THE MEAT OF BRITNEY'S STATEMENT.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, she doesn't mention Bush at all--it's completely a blind statement of "respect" for authority. "He is the leader ergo we should listen".

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:25 (twenty years ago) link

yes i imagine she would have made the same statement if gore (or whomever) were president. of course there's no way to know for sure save for stalking her and repeatedly asking her opinion on sundry specific political issues. i nominate marcello.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

I nominate Alex!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

You could send both of them.

(Only with two Berts.)

(You really don't want to know what Google Image search returns as the top search result for "Bert & Ernie", especially if you are at work.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

So, of course I looked.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, the search that worked for me was "Bert Ernie" (not in quotes), for those of you who want to try it at home.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

I nominate Killing Joke.

"C is for 'cookie', it's good enough for me"

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Haha it's like our own little version of "The Ring".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

Is that really Roger Ebert?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:09 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry to beat the dead-horse executive branch isue, but I have to repeat, as far the

Bush was democratically elected, Florida chads or no Florida chads

thing goes:

1) As pointed out upthread, it's a republican democracy--so not exactly, even in a routine year.
2) "Democratically elected" = won popular vote = Gore.
3) The judicial branch selected our 43rd president.

Which is all also kinda interesting if you buy into the (perhaps wishful) framing of the pres. as the champion of the people against little-r republican tyranny; according to this school he really is supposed to be more specifically responsive to, concerned with their welfare.

But I'm at a complete loss as to how to rebut the fiendish "chads or no chads" argument.

PS How come nobody mentioned Britney's gum? Her own dumb fault but the endless close-up was pretty cheap.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

i agree with ronan.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:23 (twenty years ago) link

Strange world.

Rather than stop at just the Bert & Ernie pic, I plundered forth into the master "don't blow" website (which has a lot of strange links on it... like the one advertising Japanese Girlfart Videos), and found this, which ties directly into the main topic.

Sure backed into that one, huh?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

I cant find anything on google. Could someone kindly link me please? Dunno what i'm looking for.

Rhonda, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

You've got to do the search at the image search engine. And I do mean you've got to.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:37 (twenty years ago) link

yknow this thread would be the perfect introduction to ilx: alex going off on something, marcello being the contrarian, mark diverting it into a debate about the civil war and the nature of democracy, ally being ally, dan being dan, some guy being annoying, bush, britney, ernie and bert, roger ebert, someone saying "oh god why did i look at that," and finally me making some dumb meta-comment about it. we should put it in the FAQ, it's got everything!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:02 (twenty years ago) link

It hasn't got Geir.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:51 (twenty years ago) link

But, I mean, yeah... aside from that.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:51 (twenty years ago) link

It needs Gareth going off drunkenly on the lack of love around here, and then maybe someone posting "twwwwoooo weeeeeeeks" and then Miccio referencing Good CHarlotte, then it'd have everything ever.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:06 (twenty years ago) link

you forgot my snappy one liner :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:11 (twenty years ago) link

I'm sorry :(

And also Blount saying jess is otm :(

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

This thread seems to be, oddly enough, Ned free. Certainly not normal.

And I've just posted in it, which makes it highly atypical as well.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:53 (twenty years ago) link

I've been reading it but wasn't much compelled to post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

Okay folks, we can FAQ this one up! Admins, lock it up for posterity!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:01 (twenty years ago) link

jess is OTM.

James Blount (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:01 (twenty years ago) link

what did he say? i can't be assed scrolling up

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:30 (twenty years ago) link

Frankly, I like this quote from this article far better:

"Like, 'Early Morning' is basically talking about just going out and feeling bad the next day, and 'Touch of My Hand' is about, you know, touch of my hand," she continued

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:49 (twenty years ago) link

ned, you mysogynist!

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:19 (twenty years ago) link

Oh good grief, I refuse to get drawn in (even as a joke! ;-)). The quote says nothing about tone but I have faith she was saying it with a laugh or roll of the eyes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:20 (twenty years ago) link

Perhaps her eyes were rolling back into her head.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:25 (twenty years ago) link

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:05 (twenty years ago) link

Option # 3, I think.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:07 (twenty years ago) link

"woman-hata" is easier to spell.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:09 (twenty years ago) link

Did you know there was no word equivalent to misogyny to denote hatred of men? Oh hand on, there is. Misandry.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:28 (twenty years ago) link

hand on WHAT?!
