I started reading that and was thinking "I bet this isn't that bad". Then it was bad. Then it was really bad. Then it wasn't just bad, it went for the throat!

Did I mention it was bad?

Dog latin, how was it?

as bad as the last post

The Twilight record is fantastic, thats for sure. I've avoided any of the leaks or previews of the Nachtmystium record, waiting to hear it in full tomorrow.

mmm, can't remember if i've heard any clips of the record, but i'll definitely be buying it in a real world record shop tomorrow O_O

Good interview, Phil. Can't wait for the Editors/Interpol/Killers influence(?!) on this album...?

So it’s all that stuff, in combination with my love for anything that sounds like Joy Division, including Joy Division. I’m the guy that loves all those knockoff bands. I love Editors, I love Interpol, I actually kinda like the Killers, I’m not gonna lie. There’s an influence from all that stuff coming through.

that band's music is boring and stuff, i'm always calling its bluff

ksh, Monday, 7 June 2010 15:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never heard Editors; for some reason I was thinking they were part of a 90s Britpop mini-wave along with Menswe@r and bands like that. I still don't think I'll be checking them out.

I liked the first Editors single, but its been diminishing returns ever since.

The stuff I've heard from Addicts sounds really great. Glad Blake's cleaning up the vocals a bit, I'm not much of a fan of the trad. growling/rawwwwwrrrr!!! black metal style vox in most cases and I like hearing a few lyrics seep through the chaos.

do you like any black metal, ilxor?

ksh, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I tend to like stuff that draws from black metal and runs with it as an influence and does something new with it. Not really a fan of any "purist" black metal, I get the appeal, I guess, but it doesn't really get to me personally.

More on the Editors influence (via Decibel); sorry, finding this funny:

Editors: The Back Room

[Editors are] just one of those post- Joy Division bands that I’ve really grown to like. I am really bummed out because they’ve gone into a downward spiral of making crappy records… but The Back Room is a perfect example of post-punk, post-goth, wannabe-Joy Division vibe that bands like Interpol try to capture. That album I also got at a pretty interesting point in my life, so it spoke to me for fairly personal reasons. Musically, overall, the album is full of singles. It has this dance-y, major vibe to it, and if you dig in it’s extremely dark and sad. I can connect to it the same way I can connect to moody black metal. It has that same vibe of sorrow and melancholy. It is probably the favored album for Nachtmystium in the van on tour.

Standout Tracks: “Lights,” “Munich” and “Camera”

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 7 June 2010 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, as much as I love both Big Black and Kraftwerk, this = FAIL:

Big Black: Songs About Fucking

Standout Track: I like that they cover Kraftwerk’s “The Model” on there. I am kind of a dipshit—I was working at a club and my friend was playing the Kraftwerk version of the song and I asked him, “Who is covering Big Black?”

Totally OTM. Bullets was great, everything else I've heard is sorta sucky.

I liked "Munich" an awful lot when it came out, yet everything else was really boring.

Isn't metal + editors = Katatonia?

So this record is not too blackened, it's almost classic rock in places. "No Funeral" is awesome- I can definitely hear the Joy Division/ Editors thing going on there.

I don't care for this new one and didn't really like the last one either (liked it a bit more at the time, but haven't played it much past the first month I had it). Not sure why their combination of things I like doesn't work for me but it doesn't. Such is life.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I would personally be siked if they did a whole album of stuff like 'Hellish Overdose' off the EP from last year - battering ram tankard metal - seems safe to assume that this album doesn't have anything like that though

Well, fuck. So much for being patient and waiting until release date. Visited/called 9 stores today (six chains and three local indie stores) and no one has it. I'm starting to see why so many people turn to illegal downloading, its not even worth trying to be a loyal customer anymore. Guess its going to be another couple weeks before I can hear this, because on top of being unable to find it, my bank card got skimmed over the weekend and I'm waiting on a replacement so I can't even order it online or even iTunes.

Sorry for the venting, just frustrated.

Hope y'all are enjoying the hell out of it.

Was able to grab a copy at Newbury Comics. If Newbury Comics weren't in the area, I'd pretty much have to use Amazon I guess.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish there was a Newbury around here, or even an Amoeba, they always seem to do well with stocking good stuff. The local Chicago metal shop when out of business recently and the others are very hit-or-miss when it comes to stocking metal. They all usually have 'em eventually, but rarely on release.

Yeah, Newbury tends to do pretty well day-of-release with a lot of metal stuff. Nachtmystium and Watain were both only $9.99 too. I just pray they don't go out of business. That would be bad.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway, done with my sob story, back to talking about how awesome these guys are. I've got Instinct Decay cranked to try and make up for it.

shit jvc! i was going to make a special trip to milwaukee reckless this afternoon for just this reason. i hope they have it by then. maybe i should ask them to put one on hold? is it that in demand or they just hadn't received it yet?

Honestly the dude that answered the phone sounded kind of out of it (I did call like first thing when they opened), but the way he was talking it sounded like they were expecting another shipment sometime today and this was supposed to be in that one. I think he added the "or tomorrow" part to cover ass in case it wasn't there before they closed tonight.

What sort of numbers can a record like this do? I wonder how many Assassins sold. I have no idea how big this band is.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know, but I do remember seeing Assassins all over B3st Buy when it came out. I'm assuming that presence had to help.

not a breakdown so much as me being a drunk, drunk, drunk-ass ass. [face of shame] wasn't really trying to draw lines in the sand, just got a bit, uh, overenthusiastic while effuhking plastered - posting @ two AM, note.

and though i enjoyed it at the time, i agree with you, aerosmith. instinct:decay = no great shakes. assassins is better, but the new one (addicts) is leaps and bounds beyond anything they've done prior. great songs, delivery, production, solos, vibe, etc. not any kind of obvious crossover attempt or reinvention of the wheel, either. just a distinctive & memorable metal record.

that is (i think) what i was trying to say the other night...
