xpost glad to hear it's not a disaster...even the finest albums can have 'problems'. But is there anything which just makes you go "WOW" like on the first two (see: Galang, BDG, Bird Flu, Paper Planes)?

since reading this article, i've been subconsciously writing a profile about myself: "He made a lame joke about 'The Wire' and then took a bite of an apple fritter."

"M.I.A. stared at the cherry-red Slurpee, slowly shifting from frozen to liquid in her styrofoam cup. 'This Slurpee reminds me of the blood of the innocent being slaughtered around the world. 7-11? More like 24-7." She takes a big sip. "I suppose that makes me a terrorist," she mutters, before dropping the cup into a fragrant trash bin lined with plastic and walking away, absentmindedly texting on her iPhone.

"M.I.A. walks down the sidewalk, chewing on a long spear of red rhubarb she had picked up at this morning's farmer's market. "It doesn't really taste that great by itself," she admits. "But it's in season, and it supports the workers. If people see me chewing on rhubarb, then maybe they might take a minute to consider just where that rhubarb came from."

i once nearly mentioned that estelle was eating nachos b/c she shoved some in her mouth just as she said something ~deep~ to me w/r/t her background and i had to play the tape back 94843944 times to work out exactly what she said. but i edited it out b/c of the word limit.

I'm neutral about M.I.A., but as far as I can tell her revolutionary politics are about as advanced as those of Jenni Rivera - who leveraged her own family's connections to revolutionary sloganeering into $$$$$$$.

Anyway, I'm bored and hungry. Follow-ups to this book:

i honestly don't think she's all that cynical about it, just sort of blinkered and self-involved. (speaking of m.i.a. here.)

honestly if she were, i dunno, 22 years old, i'd be more charitable-- she's older than me, for chrissakes. she should take a little more responsibility for her words. and stop talking like a teenager. it's almost like the infantile way she talks is a defense mechanism against being held to account for the specific things she says. maybe it's a tone she mostly adopts to the media? let's hope so.

Like I said above, I think she's getting worse, or maybe recent interviewers are bringing out the worst in her, because my experience was that she could be pretty nuanced and articulated and if you called on her on certain things she would respond thoughtfully. Not to say that she could resolve all her contradictions, but she's no dumbo. The way she contrasts, on her website, her full Grammys quote with the chopped-up version that appeared in the NYT suggests that it's quite easy to string together her most inflammatory statements in a way that makes her seem like a gormless slogan machine. But then again, she's not exactly doing a sterling job of proving otherwise.
