Isn't the MIA song just her over Various Production's "Hater"?

I’m tired of pop stars who say, ‘Give peace a chance.’ I’d rather say, ‘Give war a chance.’ The whole point of going to the Grammys was to say, ‘Hey, 50,000 people are gonna die next month, and here’s your opportunity to help.’ And no one did.”

RIGHT ON.

Band Fag X (u s steel), Monday, 31 May 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

if we're gonna call her out for being a hypocrite, what about all the MC's who reference "the struggle" and their Maybach in the same couplet? I'm trying to figure out why MIA is worthy of being called out and not everyone else who was on stage with her at the Grammy's that night. I really hope it's not her status as woman :/

Blancminaj (Spinspin Sugah), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:01 (thirteen years ago) link

allow me to connect points 'a' and 'b' for you -- the idea behind those songs is that the maybach was earned through the struggle/hard work/hustling. i know "Juicy"'s subtext is supersubtle but

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link

no, deej, actually, its her status as a woman

max, Monday, 31 May 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

does "hustling" include selling crack to your already poverty stricken neighbors?

I mean, I know it's beyond cliche to say something is very "Nathan Barley," but M.I.A. just said "The record kind of goes to different places. A bit emo... and a bit digital ruckus. Moshpit. It's kind of... muzak. It's infotainment."

Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

It's infotainment.

So Dan was quite literally right with the KRS-One comparison upthread, then.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link

do you think she's going to get krs one in to do a guest spot?

kumar the bavarian, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:28 (thirteen years ago) link

oops snap ned

kumar the bavarian, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i read the new york times article. it's easy to see it's a biased piece, but i'd also say it's likely more truthful and insightful than MIA ever will be.

pakkit, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Every story is biased.

you could say that, these days, they are both sounding a bit batshit & politically self righteous but thats about where the comparisons end

She added: "Everyone on the internet is like, 'Oh my God, come and join Facebook!' They’re all so optimistic… and really, everyone is fucking you up behind the screens. And I don't like that. It makes it difficult for me to interact with my fans knowing that. Google and Facebook were developed by the CIA, and when you're on there, you have to know that."

Amazing. She really is turning into the female Bobby Gillespie.

nice gif xps

mia is clever but obv a complete fantasist

of course not all pop stars shd be like that but it helps that a few are

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 10:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i find this woman annoying. the nyt piece isnt the best, its pretty obvious in how it wants to slyly show her up, but mia does talk a lot of complete shit. its so baiting. reeks of desperation to agitate and cause a fuss. she might have not had much back in hounslow, though ive a feeling it was more than she perhaps let on (the whole 'started from nothing' thing obv has a real attraction for her, prob from years of listening to hip hop), but now shes basically just a rich girl, living a pretty privileged existence, with some class guilt issues, a few dozen immature axes to grind (though this makes for good music, less good political interview quotes), and a rich white husband (funny how all her talk of 'IM FROM THERE I KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE IM REAL IM REAL IM REAL' she hasnt married someone sri lankan or FROM THE STRUGGLE.
