I got the 360 version, but I've just barely played it (for some reason). Definitely keep meaing to get more into it, but there has just been other games I've wanted to play more. I think I've actually played more Super Turbo in MAME/GGPO than SSFIV since it came out - LOL.

Man those are some of the worst, most annoying commentators I've ever heard. I wish more tourneys would think about getting people who have a little bit of professionalism or mic experience to do these things. The guys for this NorCal tourney though, too loud, too easily impressed, etc. - 90% of their comments were "he does THIS because he's SO GOOD", distracting from the match. It's understandable to get excited about points in the match but they were screaming almost every round at any Ultra that hit, even the guesses/trades. Kind of hilarious how everyone there was in the bag for Lamerboi, though, as a local I guess? Good perf by both, though Justin was sloppier than usual for the first couple of matches.

Major lols at that ragequit - Buktooth's Fuerte was really good!

I don't mind magus1234 all that much, mostly cos he seems like a cool enough dude; I'm not sure how SFIV commentary done strait wd be really tho I guess seth k*ll*an kinda did just that at the world exhibition matches last year

I like chris hu as well, mostly cos his broken english is p.funny; the only commentator I find roundly objectionable is arturo

MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

lol yeah they're all sausagefests

Hu I find a little annoying. I'm a little ashamed to say it as an AA myself but his accent is just too thick. But at the very least he totally knows what he's talking about and is usually having fun with it that, carries to the broadcast. One guy I'm getting tired of seeing, though, is Skisonic. He's not terrible but I keep hoping they'll get someone better.

k*ll*an was perfect IMO. Ideally I think it should be split in a typical wrestling style, one technical/mostly straight narrator and one color commentator. Most of the time though it's emotional reactions and tiny bits of tech/psychological talk, which frankly is what I want to hear more than "OHHH MY GOD!" screamed at the top of someone's lungs for 10 minutes straight. That's what the crowd is for, NOT the commentators.

Just played about an hour of Super arcade mode (hard, offline) & reminded myself that the game is so solid. But also reminded myself why I've yet to play it more, as it just feels so much like the game I played the hell out of last year... a game I really don't want to play online against strangers too much anymore either.

Arturo's Seth is just sick. The Abel player starts doing really well about halfway through the video though, when he switches to Ultra II.

seth has the distinction of being the most annoying character in a game FULL of annoying characters

cozen, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I was getting wound up just watching those matches lol

cozen, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Seth's number of mixups is insane, but am i wrong here - it looks like his damage and stamina are even worse in Super?! Maybe it just looked that way because he was fighting Abel.

Nhex, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:46 (thirteen years ago) link

abel's ultra 2 is some ridiculous bullshit

ok let's give abel an ultra that's hard to avoid unless you have a floaty jump, can be used anti-air, can be cancelled at any time, can be held/delayed, gives him some super armour, and does a shit-ton of damage loooooll

cozen, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:52 (thirteen years ago) link

struggling to think of a more annoying normal than seth's jumping fierce. maybe bison's standing roundhouse?

cozen, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I will say the abel player did really well to hold it down; especially after the first two matches were pretty much an relentless whitewash

tokido is ridiculous

anyway like an idiot I re-picked this up today for cheap; it just has some very fundamental problems which stop it being a fun fighting game. it is random and dull at low levels and dry and dull at intermediate levels.. tho it is pretty entertaining to watch at extremely high levels

Things I learned from going back to SFIV PC this weekend: 1) the competition seems to have thinned out to hardcore fanatics, for the most part - I was losing pretty awfully 2) more than many multiplayer games, it feels really hard to get back in the groove with this game - needed to play for a long time (too long, damn these manos of fate) to get back to my normal skill level 3) I'm still constantly amazed and baffled how people can pull off actual combos online

I think I'm final starting to get into Super, played some online games last night and had a pretty good time & also good, green bar connections & not so much trouble finding games thru quick match (it probably worked right 50% of the time!).

Via replay channel is there any way to see your friend's match replays - as frankly, watching random strangers replays isn't very entertaining, but it would be cool to browse thru friend's last 15 games or something like that.

One weird thing is since I'm playing on a Japanese 360 - it shows my region flag as Japan & I swear that's giving me an advantage online as people get intimidated when they see that Japanese flag - or at least it seems like that to me - or maybe just the randoms I played last night weren't very good.

Anyhow, definitely feeling & thinking I'm going to start playing this more now.

Nhex, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

The online set-up for this game has really improved with Super - I seem to be getting into games fifty percent of the times I try instead of ten percent. There also seems to be more green bar matches - kind of surprised actually, since I know it sold less. It does seem like there are less completes crubs around, but also less really skilled players - of the games I've played lately I'd say it seems like I'm mostly finding people around my own average skill (and I've won 53% of my games so far, so that feeling makes sense).

nhex (you're most likely to know I reckon), is it possible to get a convertor to allow use of PS2 sticks on 360 and/or PS3

flamelurker (cozen), Friday, 11 June 2010 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

yep - check out this thread
http://shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=181187

for PS2/360 they all require that you have a wired standard controller to bypass the lockout, and there are plenty of converters for PS2/PS3. Luckily it doesn't seem to cost a ton for these - i know some of the 360/PS3 converters are like $80, almost defeating the pt of getting one

what stick are you using? i'm tempted to go your route in some nebulous future for the easiest crossplatform solution

Good games nhex - like I said, I'm way rusty right now, but will definitely be trying to play more and get back into the flow. Shame about the lag. I swear I've played cozen 5,000 miles away with less lag! I don't know why we can't seem to get a decent connection going @ half that :(

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 July 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

GGs to you too! I'm grateful you're even willing to step down to Vanilla at this point. I could tell you were rusty, but there were a lot of obvious moments when you should've been able to properly combo or hit Ultra, if not for the lag.

I'll admit, the lag problems are very possibly on my computer's end - some combination of the fact that it's an iMac, running a two-generations-old video card on wireless internet. For every other online game there's no problem, but SF is incredibly finicky about this stuff.

xps uh what IS that animated .gif?

There's something kind of pure about going back to vanilla SFIV. Super is almost like too much... I still have so much to learn (still learning SFII tbh)
