One quick question - there are some achievements for "making a profit" at blackjack/poker. Does this mean you have to eliminate all other players in a game? Or is there a way to leave before the game is completely over, with more chips than you started with? I've only played poker about 5 times so far, but each time I leave before the game is over because it's been like 30 minutes in real life, the game isn't close to over, and I want to go shoot some birds or something.

5 finger at Armadillo is easy $100 over and over because it's the same button combination everytime. It's easier looking at the controller than the screen
Poker is alright the first few times at least. I would like there to be an quest in the game that involves playing against some big whigs on a riverboat or something
Horshoes is hard but I got to the point where I can win $8 bets at least half the time
Blackjack is whatever
Liar's Dice is fun but I've played so many variations of this game IRL that I would like to be able to play those variations in RDR. I've been out of town for the past 5 days and I ended up playing a new variation (for me) called Pirate's Dice. I like the Perudo rules best (original rules) but sometimes I vary the rule on the 'down to one dice' round for Perudo
I imagine you can play Poker and Horseshoes in multiplayer... that would be kind of fun

Question: I've picked up two newspapers at Armadillo. The second one was two issues later (55 and 57 or something). Did I miss an issue?
― CaptainLorax, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link
Z S, I finished that "make a profit in blackjack" thing by winning a $2 bet and quitting, and you can just quit over and over again until your cheap bet pays off without any negative effect.

I don't mind the cut scenes at all, but what appeals to me with this game, and these kind of games, is the story aspect. I'm not just waiting for the next bit where I have to shoot some guys again.
I've only played Horseshoes so far. First time for a $1 bet and I beat the guy quite easily, so I raised it to a $10 bet on the second game and he thrashed me. Like, no contest.
Is Tumbleweed actually haunted? I've wandered around there at the dead of night, and it's pretty spooky, especially the house on the hill - wind howling, owls hooting, eerie music - but I haven't seen anything.
Still can't find the buried treasure, and I've been all over that damned hill up past Hanging Rock.
― DavidM, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, the treasure is frustrating. I may have to youtube those.
― forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link
I just played free roam for like four hours with a bunch of guys that didn't kill everyone for no reason
By the end I was just driving around in stagecoaches holding lit dynamite and crashing into people
― MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link
the 3rd treasure map, with just a picture of the house is pretty ??? is that tumbleweed?
the first arm-wrestling match I had pop up was ended by a rattlesnake before I could join.
forks - you were far away from the main scrum. i kept getting killed and i think you left before i could find you. i am 'tehdead' btw.

HA i'm on the sixth treasure map, it's been my favourite part. it reminds me of the stealing cars for steve mission in gta4, where all you were given was a photo of a car in a 'location' unknown.
i am rubbish at all those poker, dice etc games.
i am now in mexico and it looks rather fab.
i saw a hanging woman in tumbleweed, and when i went back she wasn't there. dunno if it was meant to be a ghost or what. also for a derelict place, it had a few too many lights on. again, not sure if that was a ghostly thing or a coding error. pretty spooky tho, but a lot of the places in this game are at night anyway
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link
i think you can buy back issues of newspapers, i came across somewhere that was offering that to me somewhere. (might have misread tho)
i really love the plants and trees in this game, so so real the way they've been arranged. Sometimes i wish that i could just grab a dirt bike tho and vroom around.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link
Can def buy back issues. Try the train station in Armadillo.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link
and just another critism, the main missions are a bit too easy. i can't recall many missions that i've had to try twice.
*spoiler warning*even on that last first half mission, after the machine gun part, finishing off the guys in the fort. i went to press the cover button but accidentally jumped right into the thick of dozens of bad guys and still somehow managed to survive.
maybe i'm just a wicked gunslinger.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link
SPOILER
Only mission I've had any trouble with so far is when you assault that house to rescue the hostages inside. I never died, but I kept having trouble killing the guy holding a gun to the hostage's head before he could pull the trigger. Took me 2 or 3 times to get it.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link
additional spoiler to mordy above
i remember that one i think. and i i blazed in without any care for the hostages lol, i even shot the girl in the last room and she survived. unless you're talking about another hostage mission later on.

AGAIN spoiler
fucking love that mission on the raft, and the music when mexico opens. haha wow.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm glad it's a bit easier than previous GTAs; I've never finished a GTA because I've been bogged down by the difficulty. I def think there's a strong possibility I'll finish RDR
― cozen, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, same here
― MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link
I was thinking that I've never failed on a mission, but it's just that restarting is so painless you don't really notice when you've failed a mission. Dead Eye is a bit of a win button, though. Also not sure I'll ever have the co-ordination to shoot people in expert mode.
― MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link
I've just done the save Bonnie from being hanged mission and, duels aside, it was the first and only time I've used Dead Eye at all. I just never remember I have it, or I just haven't needed it 'till now. Your gun locks onto people (+ animals) easy enough anyway, even at full pace on horseback, I don't see there's much need of it. Yet anyway.
― DavidM, Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link
no i agree, the instant lock on is good enough most of the time. times that i use it are for v.long range shots that seem to hit more with the dead eye method, and also for cougar attacks.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link
oh and of course when shooting stuff that it won't lock onto, like hanging ropes
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link
I find the instant lock isn't really good enough when you need to take out a huge group of people before being killed, or trying to hit really small game (like armadillos) as they run away.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link
You tend to need it on the Free Roam gang hideouts, because you're outnumbered by a bunch of pissed off guys who are much better at hitting you in the head than the single player grunts.
― MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link
and peoples hats
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link
the problem i have with people's hats is that it tends to paint the guy's face before i can move it to the hat. i can't wait for it to shift to manual paint, cause i've killed so many people while just trying to shoot their hats off.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i've yet to come across a sniper rifle, which i'm gagging for too.
I think in Mexico, the auto aim starts to slacken a tetch. I would also kill a man for a snipe rifle.
― forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link
slight spoiler
i killed the water diviner, because when i finished the mission (and he complained that i'd gotten blood on the deed) he was using binoculars. so i thought that if i killed him i'd get the binocs. it didn't happen but at least i got the deed back, not sure i can use it for anything tho.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link
I too have not noticed the fame or honour meter popping up anymore either.
― bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link
lol. I was doing a live bounty and the goons chasing me killed him while I was transporting him. Epic save-your-friend failz.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link
And there are three dead-eye stages. The first is you hit dead-eye and then you can target while the game has slowed down. The second stage you just roll the cursor over targets and it paints on little target things. Then you hit trigger and you can shoot like 6 people at once. The third stage (which I'm not at yet), you actually hit a button to paint on targets, it doesn't auto-paint. So you have a lot more control over your targets.
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link
lolxp
ah i wondered why the painting only appeared halfway through my game. thanks, that explains it. yeah that last stage sounds crucially useful.
has anyone done many of those close up kills? they are fucking brutal graphically, oh man.

So is there an achievement for buying every rentable house? Cause I've got the money for it, but I can't really see any use for having a house/apartment in every town.

Btw: I have high hopes for Fallout New Vegas, but this is (so far at least) my favorite game of the year by far, and maybe my second favorite game of the contemporary era (this gen consoles) after Fallout 3.

the mexican map looks gorgeous, there's some amazing towns - it all reminds me of being on holidays.
haha i'm helping some dude to build a plane. Loved the cut scene dialogue "..I'll get you that stuff for yer, because I just HAVE to see you jump off that cliff"

there is some to the northwest of where the boars are, north of the macfarlane ranch, but there is nothing of note in the area
just some snow

Ugh. Had three boar tusks for the challenge (and a bunch of other animals, like half an hour of hunting + skinning) and a cougar came out of nowhere, hit me, I rolled down a hill and couldn't stand up to deadeye before he finished the job. Meh!
― Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 22:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the game must get confused between locations you've been to and those you've unlocked with maps -- just bought a map for an area i'd been and it gave me the unlock.

i actually quite dig the cougar thing, it's pretty hairy just getting off your horse in the arse end of nowhere having to keep your wits about you.
gives the game an edge
