do you mean its ... gangster rap?

bcuz jacka himself doesnt really sound like any member of g-unit & certainly has his own lyrical style

to a degree i get what you mean -- it definitely goes for the feel of millenial pop rap in general, of which g-unit was obviously a big part (also Fed-X, one of the lesser mob figaz, totally does sound like 50 cent at times). but this is sort of like what tim talks about w/r/t funky house ... its going for a template that is seemingly 'done before' but actually turns it into something fresh .... i mean its not like the pop charts sound anything like early 00s right now anyway -- 'i'm going down' sounds like early neptunes, for ex ... its using that entire era as a basis for something new.

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Sunday, 30 May 2010 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

but like '20 bricks' 'i be mia' 'drug war' 'i live the life' 'girls say' -- thats a hugely diverse swath of beats/ sounds & hooks

its aite, a lot of classic 80s instrumentals. pretty fun

jacka's slightly nasal, grungy voice brings lloyd banks to mind for me
but yes, more than anything it's the staleness of early 2000's rap that I'm hearing
just doesn't do anything for me

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 02:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought ilx was all about the legendary groundbreaking work of mainstream pop rap of the millenial era, what with it all sounding like boards of canada?

lloyd banks is way more generic than jacka, lyrically & in rap style

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Sunday, 30 May 2010 03:40 (thirteen years ago) link

u have me confused with a gray mass of people who's opinions I don't share.
sounds like banks to me; u asked, that's what I'm hearing
i'm not that big a fan of either and honestly I think this particular subgenre of rap is really not so much my thing anyways

Who has heard the new Shad album, TSOL? It just came out last week and it's the biggest Canadian rap release this year thus far, at least until Rollie releases Roquentin.

Y'all owe it to yourselves to peep it.

you still regurgitating watered down padgett zings from 2003 is 'funny,' but not in the way you think

the new bun b album sounds awful

T-Pain assisted "Trillionaire." Other cameos on the album include Young Jeezy on the bouncy "Just Like That," and Drake on two tracks: "Put It Down" and the closer "It's Been a Pleasure." The most surprising track on Trill O.G. brings Bun B with his former UGK brethren Pimp C and Tupac Shakur who both posthumously bless the track "Right Now" with Trey Songz on the hook.

theres a dj premier song

i remember hearing a rumor that Bun B was gonna try to make his "legacy" album and have it produced entirely by mr. lee or mike dean or something like that. then we get t-pain, tupac and trey songz

hes on fucking rap-a-lot what's the difference what he puts on the albums, it's not like it needs a viable hit single to make a difference in promotion. he should have done what scarface did with Made and Emeritus and just put out some good shit. looks like this will be just like II Trill
