i can vouch for some of em too. i'll add amsterdam falafel to the list of good things in dc. i know it was on the other thread, but i've been missing it lately. best falafel ever, second only perhaps to a few drunken versions enjoyed in berlin a few years ago.

It makes me want to leave College Park with the quickness

maybe petesmith can explain to you why college park is a wonderful place. i'd do it for him, but i don't really agree.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I was thinking about putting Amsterdam Falafel on the list, except that it's not really a bar. But I could get drunk on those fries, and it's got such a friendly staff.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:17 (eighteen years ago) link

the first time i went in i was short on cash. the owner saw me counting out my quarters and crumpled bills, and when i told him i was 50 cents short, he told me i could just pay next time. which i did.

my out of town friends who visited me still talk about the falafel place of dc.

carly (carly), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:20 (eighteen years ago) link

if you're ever in Philly, go to Maoz... the BEST. It's like Amsterdam Falafel but with better toppings, tastier bread, and crispier ballz.

also, the bar at 2 Amy's. I know it's the bar at a pizza place, but the beers & wines & drinks are great, as are the bartenders. Perfect for weekend afternoon drinking/eating.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Ally OTM re the disproportion. I've got no serious problem with arrogant assholes and single-issue bores as long as they're just part of the mix; cf. New York, which wouldn't be the same without moronic young Masters of the Universe lurching around town.

Here, though, since they drive the market, they drive out most of the unorthodox niche joints--bookstores, strange bars, weird art things, whatever--that make a city interesting, and people who like to see something surprising every once in a while are kind of fucked.

It's funny, though, how interesting/okay people tend to cling together once they find each other, and have to look to each other for entertainment. It's like being in an expat community, but without the expensive long distance and dodgy water supply.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't understand why the Asylum is still even on there. The last many times I went there it was awful, their redesign is doing them absolutely no favors whatsoever. I mean yeah the beer is still cheap as shit and the wings are probably good but the crowd seems to have shifted a little more than I would've liked it to have. :(

Also it's just kind of ugly inside now!

I actually think I might kind of prefer Pharmacy now. Although I'm still pretty sure that my favorite spot on that strip isn't any of those places but Blue Fin instead.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Never mind the part about the water supply.

And to get with Brian's positive vibe: Amsterdam Falafel is excellent, and the all-you-can-stack toppings bar is the starving drunk's friend.

Stetson's
The people at Staccato were always super nice..

Re: social scene, I feel like it seemed easier just out of college, because everybody I knew was in the same boat, kinda poor and living in grungy apartments and run down group houses where they'd throw parties a lot and we'd go for $2 drinks at the Common Share. And now it's a few years out and people are movin' on up and working more hours and buying places and going to fancy lounges to hang out, except I went back to school and am poorer than I was before.

Re: security, I was so tempted to apply when I saw this job posting, Web Designer and Developer (Baghdad, Iraq)

"Yeah Mom, I landed this awesome gig building websites, uh, it's great experience, but.. it's kind of out of town.."

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Wait, Asylum just recently became kind of ugly?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I like Rep Your Hood on WPGC.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Asylum's kind of gone from 70s-guy-with-a-panel-van dungeon decor to 90s-teenager-with-a-Magic-deck dungeon decor.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I prefer real biker ugly to stylized forced ugly :(

I haven't been there since maybe August? Whenever geeta was in town...but that was a weeknight and the crowd isn't quite the same as it used to be, a lot more...uh...Adams Morgany. I mean I dunno, in my very lengthy experience with dive bars and the like, the really grungy ass ones have 10x better crowds than tricked out "THIS IS A DIVE BAR!" designed ones. I mean the Asylum ripped out its innards and had it redone by the dude who did Reef (xpost what Stephen just said). I think they just attract different clientele. This might be due to the yuppification of Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights just as much as it is due to the change of atmosphere. I hold out hopes for Galaxy Hut and really didn't awful mind going there even though I'm not a beer person because it's so munky looking inside!

Granted, buffalo wings are fucking awesome.

Also I just saw a taxi with spinner rims. Point, DC.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:45 (eighteen years ago) link

do you people wanna fucking hang out sometime or are we just gonna talk about how no one hangs out ever!!!

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Well yeah I'm one of those DC people who doesn't hang out ever (other than with myself and my "circle of friend" [= 1 person with whom I live]), but I USED to hang, so I think I know how, so hey yeah lets hang.

quincie, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:54 (eighteen years ago) link

yah pete and i were talking about this yesterday actually, so fuck it, let's hang out

The old-school cab company logos also score points for DC, in my book. DC: Where every cab's a gypsy cab.

Weeknights nxt week are good for me.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm sorry brian miller, about insulting the washingtonian.

i wouldn't introduce dc cabs into testimony, logos or no, the cab system in the city is really really awful.

Carly, I read the tom chat too... and the gene weingarten chat. His chat is much better than his column, though they talk about VPL waaay too much.

I would love to hang out, am out of town again and don't have a place to live yet, but looks like I should have a job so will be settled.. uh.. soonish. You know, by the time the weather gets too bad to go out much.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:14 (eighteen years ago) link

so let's do a weeknight, like maybe next Thurs?

xpost the weather is never too bad to go out. I have climbed 5 ft snowdrifts to get inside of bars. Though if it's raining, that's right the fuck out.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Next Thursday's great. Shall we pick a bar off of Brian's list? Nothing wrong with Pharmacy.

Last DC cab ride I took, the driver was too baked to go over 25, and kept telling meandering stories about his former career as a soccer star in Europe, how he represented Ghana at the 1972 international Boy Scout jamboree, etc. Awesome.

hardcore: Q: What is the strangest/most exotic item you've ever had to eat?

Tom Sietsema: The one that leaps to mind at the moment: a still-breathing (but stunned from boiling water) fish.

that sounds like a fun cab ride! the cab rides i've had from the bus station to my house at 2 am have been more stressful.

carly (carly), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

The cab rides from Union Station to anywhere are like hell on earth. What is with the obsession with piling as many people as possible into cars down here anyway? I mean they'll have a string of taxis 30 deep and they try to pile everyone into one cab. Which is A) crap B) you should not have to pay full fare for, 90% of the time you're going to have to be taken out of your way, unless you are the lucky bastard who is the first stop.

Pharmacy is alright by me! If it sucks that night we can always hit Asylum and make fun of the D&D decor or go over to the Reef and hope the downstairs is open.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll try to be there if possible.. signs point to "I have no idea where I'll be next week but hopefully moving in to a nice place.."

My last DC cab ride, I had to be at a job interview at 1, and I caught a cab at 12:35 (it was only a five minute ride, Connecticut to Wisconsin Ave) and on the way he picked up some other guy and started heading over to Adams Morgan and I had to talk him out of this so I wouldn't be late.. Then he spent the rest of the ride talking about how people make craploads of money pet sitting and dog walking and such, and how many hours a day he had to drive a cab just to get by..

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I can do Thursday, yeah--I'll just do my downward dog on the bar or something.

Pete-

Yeah, I remember that night; about two years ago? I have to admit, I barely remember the Fake Accents because I was talking to sketch outside for the whole set.

And now that I think of it, you and Zach were at sketch and nicole's b-day party last year, though I can't remember being introduced...Small world strikes!

Scott H, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

quincie, I'll join you in it, I haven't been keeping up with my working out lately and it's starting to show...

quincie, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

where do you do yoga, quincie? its been a couple years since i have, and i have considered getting back into it...

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Unless the 50-something is Madonna then yeah that sucks. I am most likely in the same boat by now, I can no longer stretch my leg behind my head! Not even painfully...It just doesn't work. :(

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

(x-x-x-post) Wednesday or Thursday next week would work for me.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Unity Woods. They have a couple of locations--where is it you live again? Anyhow, it is a mega shrine to Iyengar yoga (everyone is having a freaking yogic orgasm about his being in town on a book tour) but I must admit all of the teachers I've taken classes with have really known their shit, and they are much less flaky that the Bikram and Anusara crowd. Ashtanga is too aerobics-like for me, but a lot of people dig that style, too.

xpost

I totally know what you mean--I used to be able to get both legs back there, but now I can only get my left leg up. If I drink enough on Thursday I'm sure I'd be willing to demonstrate.

Note to self: wear pants on Thursday. Not ready for ILX to see my panties.

quincie, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I should totally sign up for yoga, is it expensive where you go? I tried a few classes once and it was great.. I used to be really flexible because I took dance classes for years and years, and suddenly it was like holy shit, what happened, I can't do splits any more and I'm getting old.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:54 (eighteen years ago) link

It is insanely expensive compared to my $8/class place in Texas! I think it works out to eighteen dollars or so for an hour and a half class, but you sign up for a session of 12 classes so it seems like a mega money hemorrhage when you write the check.

Here's the web site (almost NSFW 'cause it has the director in scary yoga shorts!):
