Have you done any Irish missions before?

Mordy, Saturday, 29 May 2010 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep; just finished the snake oil salesman and the grave robber and I think I just have to do two with Irish and I'll be ready for an assault on the mission.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 29 May 2010 06:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Just played four hours of multiplayer with some pals. I need to sleep.

spending waaaaaay too much time on this generally wandering and hunting rather than doing owt - played 3 or 4 hours last night - did 3 missions.

Don't think I've hit 20 hours so quickly on a game for ages.

MPx4A, Saturday, 29 May 2010 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

hunting does have the oregon trail appeal, dunnit.

I know I can deadeye w/ the lasso but how do I hogtie. I think my timing is screwy. I am also trying to do it from horseback;

1) lasso a person

2) Hold L2; press triangle?

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 29 May 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

do I automatically dismount from horse if trying to lasso from horse?

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 29 May 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

no. You can lasso from horse or on foot. You have to run up and touch the lasso'd person while they're still on the ground and hit the hogtie button (Y on xbox, not sure on PS3)
I just went south of the border and the amazing and very clearly directorially planned moment with the jose gonzalez music was awesome. Then i got eaten by wolves.
this is a lot less like GTA and a lot more like fallout 3 i do believe.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 29 May 2010 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

so you throw lasso, hold the button you throw with, then direct the horse/walk to the person and "tap" triangle or "press n hold" triangle?

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 29 May 2010 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

L2 is the button you don't want to let go of, not the throw button (R2).

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 29 May 2010 23:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think I get the point w/ this movie showing right now -- it looks like he took the cutscenes and rearranged them to flow more like a film narrative? What's the point? They needed a real director to do this?

Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 04:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i randomly join multiplayer a couple days ago and it put me in a game with forks.

wow @ the music when you cross into mexico for the first time. very cinematic.

not on yet here

yeah this is pretty stupid, guess its meant to be an ad?

|8 l) u_u (bnw), Sunday, 30 May 2010 04:45 (thirteen years ago) link

But a kinda legit director (the guy who directed The Road) directed it. They needed a professional director to make this?

more pathetic medium inferiority syndrome

Nhex, Sunday, 30 May 2010 05:25 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yay first full on game-breaking glitch. lassoed a dude when up close and then hogtied him, which amusingly left him vertical. pressed button to pick him up, now i have an invisible dude over my shoulder, a standing dude that i cant do anything with, and i cant put invisible dude down, or put him on my horse, or ride my horse, or do anything...

so much for that whole bunch of mission progress since my last save point. rrrrggg

ME AND YOU AGAINST THE WORLD, BUDDY

CUSE EX MACHINA (jjjusten), Sunday, 30 May 2010 06:39 (thirteen years ago) link

What a rip. I was doing the hunting mission where you have to kill 5 wolves with your knife. So, I killed and skinned 4 wolves, and was chasing after(!) a fifth when a cougar pounced and killed me. Okay fine. But when I woke and was heading off back to Rio Bravo to get the remaining wolf, I checked my satchel - no wolf pelts. It didn't save. Had to start from scratch.

Anyone found the religious lady from the train ride lying dying by some rocks out in the wilderness? Some weird goins on in this game.

DavidM, Sunday, 30 May 2010 08:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, she was an odd quest, basically came down to "give her some medicine", and I already had some in my pocket, so the whole thing was over in seconds.

These random deaths plus infrequent autosaves could really be enough to ruin this game. Only been a problem for me a couple of times so far, but seems to be happening to everyone at some point, and yeah, they're only going to get more annoying.

JimD, Sunday, 30 May 2010 11:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Someone told me more gang hideouts etc open up in free roam as you level up...but looking at faqs I'm not sure that's the case? Anyone confirm or deny? Or is it really just a matter of grinding those same 6 or 7 locations over and over?

JimD, Sunday, 30 May 2010 11:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I think you can kill wolves w/your gun and skin them for the pelts and it still registers. iirc when I checked my stats on tht one I had 2 wolves killed by knife but 4 pelts collected

cozen, Sunday, 30 May 2010 13:18 (thirteen years ago) link

if I had to gripe about anything in this game it would most certainly be the cut scenes, they are waaaaay too long. i've started skipping them completely now.

otherwise, i'm still enjoying it. I think i'm on the final mission for the first part. But before I do it I want to finish off all the other stuff. I particularly want to start opening up the outfits, because it sounds like some of them could be useful (the extra dead eye for starters)

and i've still not played anything of the poker, finger, dice games. I tried the horeshoe one, i was crap at it.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

horseshoes was the most frustrating thing about the game so far. the instructions are lacking, i had to look up how to really do it on the web >:(

don't think I have skipped one cut-scene though.

|8 l) u_u (bnw), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:13 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not like me really, i think last night i just lost all patience

bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

bnw, I don't remember playing with you! And i've only played online once! What happened?

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

horseshoes and dueling and 5 finger and blackjack are a pain in the ass.
i busted my first table at poker last night.
I like liar's dice; genuinely fun game.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:39 (thirteen years ago) link

One quick question - there are some achievements for "making a profit" at blackjack/poker. Does this mean you have to eliminate all other players in a game? Or is there a way to leave before the game is completely over, with more chips than you started with? I've only played poker about 5 times so far, but each time I leave before the game is over because it's been like 30 minutes in real life, the game isn't close to over, and I want to go shoot some birds or something.

fuck it we're going to Applebee's® (Z S), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

5 finger at Armadillo is easy $100 over and over because it's the same button combination everytime. It's easier looking at the controller than the screen

Poker is alright the first few times at least. I would like there to be an quest in the game that involves playing against some big whigs on a riverboat or something

Horshoes is hard but I got to the point where I can win $8 bets at least half the time

Blackjack is whatever

Liar's Dice is fun but I've played so many variations of this game IRL that I would like to be able to play those variations in RDR. I've been out of town for the past 5 days and I ended up playing a new variation (for me) called Pirate's Dice. I like the Perudo rules best (original rules) but sometimes I vary the rule on the 'down to one dice' round for Perudo

I imagine you can play Poker and Horseshoes in multiplayer... that would be kind of fun

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Question: I've picked up two newspapers at Armadillo. The second one was two issues later (55 and 57 or something). Did I miss an issue?

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Z S, I finished that "make a profit in blackjack" thing by winning a $2 bet and quitting, and you can just quit over and over again until your cheap bet pays off without any negative effect.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't mind the cut scenes at all, but what appeals to me with this game, and these kind of games, is the story aspect. I'm not just waiting for the next bit where I have to shoot some guys again.

I've only played Horseshoes so far. First time for a $1 bet and I beat the guy quite easily, so I raised it to a $10 bet on the second game and he thrashed me. Like, no contest.

Is Tumbleweed actually haunted? I've wandered around there at the dead of night, and it's pretty spooky, especially the house on the hill - wind howling, owls hooting, eerie music - but I haven't seen anything.

Still can't find the buried treasure, and I've been all over that damned hill up past Hanging Rock.

DavidM, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the treasure is frustrating. I may have to youtube those.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I just played free roam for like four hours with a bunch of guys that didn't kill everyone for no reason

By the end I was just driving around in stagecoaches holding lit dynamite and crashing into people

MPx4A, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

the 3rd treasure map, with just a picture of the house is pretty ??? is that tumbleweed?

the first arm-wrestling match I had pop up was ended by a rattlesnake before I could join.

forks - you were far away from the main scrum. i kept getting killed and i think you left before i could find you. i am 'tehdead' btw.

|8 l) u_u (bnw), Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

HA i'm on the sixth treasure map, it's been my favourite part. it reminds me of the stealing cars for steve mission in gta4, where all you were given was a photo of a car in a 'location' unknown.

i am rubbish at all those poker, dice etc games.

i am now in mexico and it looks rather fab.

i saw a hanging woman in tumbleweed, and when i went back she wasn't there. dunno if it was meant to be a ghost or what. also for a derelict place, it had a few too many lights on. again, not sure if that was a ghostly thing or a coding error. pretty spooky tho, but a lot of the places in this game are at night anyway

bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i think you can buy back issues of newspapers, i came across somewhere that was offering that to me somewhere. (might have misread tho)

i really love the plants and trees in this game, so so real the way they've been arranged. Sometimes i wish that i could just grab a dirt bike tho and vroom around.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Can def buy back issues. Try the train station in Armadillo.

Mordy, Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

and just another critism, the main missions are a bit too easy. i can't recall many missions that i've had to try twice.

*spoiler warning*
even on that last first half mission, after the machine gun part, finishing off the guys in the fort. i went to press the cover button but accidentally jumped right into the thick of dozens of bad guys and still somehow managed to survive.

maybe i'm just a wicked gunslinger.
