Or maybe the UNEDITED ARTICLE will reveal a different MIA!

Schooling Lynn over a truffle fry!

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow you guys

You know that MIA's reaction to this article is more of a takedown than the article itself, right? Why are we even arguing over this? (lol "we")

tipsy's really onto something here. Hirschberg's gotchas depend on falsely equating MIA's third world concerns with hairshirt liberalism whereas plainly, a la Paper Planes, she's bringing aspirational hip hop swagger to the issue. It's pretty obvious from her records that she wants money (because, unlike the strawman middle-class socialist, she grew up with fuck all) so why not spend it on fancy fries?

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Also a 2005 Northern Irish singer who said "give war a chance" would be more successful in the US than MIA has been, especially if she was as physically attractive as MIA.

What about an Irish singer who tore up a pic of the Pope? What would happen to her?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link

The "unedited article" is gonna be a bunch of stick-figure drawings.

kkvgz, Friday, 28 May 2010 12:16 (thirteen years ago) link

x-post-ish Is it not fair to point out that Bono grew up in Ireland at the peak of the Troubles? He may be old and rich, but I bet he remembers a firsthand thing or two that MIA has only learned later in life, second-hand.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 May 2010 12:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The unedited article is going to be a video of MIA pantsing Hirschberg at a Laker game.

"but I bet he remembers a firsthand thing or two that MIA has only learned later in life, second-hand"

Uh wait she did live in Sri Lanka until she was 8, right?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:19 (thirteen years ago) link

MIA apparently the only person in the entire world who can't get away with intimating that Bono is a pompous cock.

In 2005? Or in the 90s? Context shapes impact.

Bono grew up in Dublin and the troubles were confined to the north in a way that ppl dont really get outside of Ireland it seems

in ireland, they call them chips

She seems to be getting more belligerent and simplistic as she gets older, which is a shame.

Ireland seems much smaller than it is for some reason. I would have pegged it as being as big as Vermont maybe, but it's really more like Indiana-sized.

kkvgz, Friday, 28 May 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

why is it that every time i see a news story involving MIA, it reconfirms the sense that she is an unhinged, mentally unstable narcissist?

Vanilla Douche (res), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:59 (thirteen years ago) link

xp well its weird that it is only a couple of hours by car to belfast but that the troubles really were a northern irish thing that didn't cross the border in a way that ppl really thought that much about

plax (ico), Friday, 28 May 2010 12:59 (thirteen years ago) link

xp no idea? Something about you maybe?

anyway, for everyone who is like, "an MIA song may not be an article in the atlantic but *at least she's making an effort*" and representing the tamil cause or whatever, i say bullshit. last year the sri lankan govt literally killed the fuck out of 1000s of civilians being kept 'for their own protection' in camps. and MIA's response is to basically comport herself like (word to passantino) a spastic youtube commenter/twittard, and then do a nathan barley-esque "edgy" video about killing redheads. really helping. really raising ppls' consciousness. s0 much better than apolitical pop stars like madonna/lady gaga/__________

"MIA's response is to basically comport herself like (word to passantino) a spastic youtube commenter/twittard"

This appears to be her response to everything these days.

"but *at least she's making an effort*" and representing the tamil cause or whatever"

Is anyone actually saying this btw? I'll admit I haven't followed the thread to closely, but this seems like a fantasy argument to me.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, my Ireland knowledge isn't that great, I admit. So were folks in Dublin all, huh, what Troubles? There were bombings and stuff in Dublin, too, right? Or at least threats? Regardless, Sri Lanka pre-adolescence or no, I hardly believe MIA was living on the front lines of armed conflict, fetching water for the troops. I still think it's a fair point to make, since pompous ass or not I don't think Bono has a simplistic view or the world - let alone Ireland - uncolored by conflict and war.

FWIW, I've yet to hear/read a coherent political statement from MIA. She sounds like any other dorm-room radical to me, who talks a lot of "revolution" and "terrorism" but still happily takes off her shoes at security when she flies First Class. In other words, given how media savvy she is, she's either a fucking moron or so far beyond cynical on subjects as broad as human rights or "freedom" or
"America" or fashion her opinion is less than useless.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 May 2010 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

the north was a whole different deal afaik Josh.

So not that it doesn't perfect sense, there was violence in the North, and in London, but not in between?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 May 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

the politics of the north were definitely a "thing" in the south -- murky history, extremely murky, but strictly speaking the ira was the enemy of the existing republic of ireland. it wanted to replace it. but it also had a lot of support in the south.

but if there were any significant killings or bombs there i've forgotten about them.

that doesn't mean bono can't talk about it. if you are going to make political statements, you'll get called on them. it isn't complicated.

there was violence in the North, and in London, but not in between?

basically yeah

English: The Money Woman (history mayne), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

England was an occupying force in the north. The IRA opposed English presence in Ireland. London is where English wealth & power are concentrated - I think that's the thinking anyway - this board is loaded with people who should be able to spell all this out more clearly & less Rongly than I. but the sense I got from friends in Dublin was that the north was practically a whole different world.

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

There were a small handful of loyalist bombings in the South, the biggest was in Dublin in the 70s, but yeah nothing like the scale of the violence Northern Ireland, or even in London.

lol so that's what all those weird "message deleted" in the Admin log are, mod's using their powers to forward the discussion in a positive fashion rather than repeating elements of the conversation. This is a reasonable and intelligent use of mod powers and exquisitely handled. Hail our mod overlords. Hail, I say!

At this point, MIA would get cred shit if she strapped on a bomb and actually blew something up. She needs to start playing up some KLF-styled prankishness and less prat-ishness. Maybe she can set fire to her LA home, tear up a picture of herself and yell "fight the real enemy!" or something? You know, get people talking.

Also when you take out the leet-speak it's more clearly another album with the real name of an artist with a stage name, like Todd Smith or Reg Strikes Back.
