I had assumed that the high St Ets and Pulp presence was due to people voting for their songs who *aren't* in to revivalist rock. These two acts always struck me as the two "britpop" artists of choice if you fucking hate britpop. Or am I just assuming that everyone thinks the same way I do?

At a distance this poll appears to resemble Tom's 90s list (which was hugely formative for me) - which also had a strong Saint Etienne and Pulp presence.

I thought the St Et/Pulp thing was more an indication that, on ILM, there's a sort of bedrock consensus w/r/t indie, in a way that there isn't with hip-hop or dance or pop. So a lot of peoples' indie-ish votes clustered around St Et, Pulp, B&S etc, but their hip-hop votes diverged more, their pop votes diverged more, their country votes (if they voted for country) diverged more...

But, you know, I could just be trying to put a different spin on it.

(also, ffs, the fact that a lot of people on ilm like nineties brit indie does not make it a bastion of rockism, it makes it a bastion of corny indie fuxx0rism. rock-orientation is, after all, not automatically rockism. (this in brackets because, you know, just wanted to make objection known etc.))

I actually haven't finished the tallying but I'm not entirely sure, based on preliminary numbers, that StEt will place more than one album on the top 100. Could be wrong.

My main problem with the St. Etienne/Pulp rants is with the argument that the results are dull and/or not balanced because 5 songs of each made the Top 100. I think the real reason most of these people are upset is that they do not believe St. Etienne or Pulp deserved that many entries. I, for instance truly believe that all 5 St. Etienne nominations were among the best singles on the 90s and I wouldn't take them out of my personal list just for the sake of fairness and balance. Why does everybody accept all-time albums lists with 3 Beatles entries in the Top 10? Considering the number of albums ever recorded, that seems pretty dull/unbalanced to me.

There is no decade or EVEN year where two artists/bands/whatever released 10% of the best 100 songs released during that time period. Given the massive amount of music released EACH week for basically the past 50+ years, I think it requires an almost willful desire to limit one's taste/listening habits to believe otherwise.

The list fairly represents peoples tastes, I think that should be pretty evident. Like you, I think a more diverse outcome would look better. But I don't think that the fact that this was not the case, makes the outcome less fair.
