I have to say, it's kind of amusing how some of the excerpts are way less jarring/idiotic etc in the context of the piece.

I dunno. The quotes are way more amusing out of context.

I read the piece yesterday and thought, "Oh, she's become `unpredictable' in that boring star way."

Like, for example, the Blackwater thing; it's pretty clear she's talking about appropriating a specific style and applying it to a different function from the flow of the piece, yet the narration tries to subvert the story its telling by editorializing about how the idea doesn't make any sense when it actually does.

the few people who court controversy these days seem to be trying way too hard in my opinion

either that or we've all been paying attention to this sort of thing so long that it'd take a totally loose cannon to really get my attention

the olive bread and truffle fry lines are cheap shots, but there's way more than enough in that article, anyhow, to out her as a callow poseur. but we all knew that already.

I think it isn't worth talking about because everyone who cares has already made up their mind one way or the other and is violently disdainful of the people who disagree with them.

In a lot of ways, she has succeeded admirably in being a reflection of 2K politics.

I think talking about whether or not she's "authentic" is a total waste of time, as it is with any artist.

that quietus hit piece on florence and the machine seemed so cheap because florence came across as basically a nice lady, if a little simple

actually i dont know that lynn herschberg is an unpleasant person

she certainly hold musicians to high standards of political sophistication though

somehow I doubt that anyone who takes M.I.A. seriously is going to be dissuaded from doing so by the New York Times

who are these people that take MIA "seriously" and what does it mean to do so

i could see this piece subconsciously affecting our lesser critics to not try so hard to find MIA to be a genius, esp if the new album is difficult/crap. none of it is really news, but the rising sentiment of MIA ISN'T ALL THAT is being dignified by the grey lady here.
