I mean damn that guy must have some resentments

I also want to see the "UNEDITED VERSION"!

"My tirade, typical in the way it moved from the political to the personal and back again, was interrupted by a waiter, who offered me a variety of rolls. I chose the olive bread which was delicious. That vicious cunt Lynn chose some baguette thing which she picked at but didn't eat since she subsists on hate alone."

Do you like the music of M.I.A.? Do you listen to her lyrics, or do you just like the beat? The Times Magazine examines the politics of the Sri Lankan musician, who has been called a terrorist sympathizer by some. In general, do you pay attention to political messages in music? What musical artists past or present do you think have been particularly deft at getting across political messages?

A+ content, but you need to type like a dyslexic third grader to get the Authenticity Factor.

why does the writer say her fans don’t listen to the lyrics? Has she met them all?
And what does she have against french fries? These are trite comments.

Diplo said, “I made her sing.” He was a producer of her first album as well as “Paper Planes” and was also Maya’s boyfriend for several years. “Maya is a big pop star now, and pop stars sing,” he said. “For me, making this record wasn’t easy. In the past, we were a team. But Maya wanted to show us how much she didn’t need us. In the end, Maya is postmodern: she can’t really make music or art that well, but she’s better than anyone at putting crazy ideas into motion. She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants.”

this quote is nuts

When Richard Russell, the head of XL Recordings, Maya’s British label, visited the house, he told her it reminded him of how the Rolling Stones recorded the classic album “Exile on Main St.” in a villa in the South of France in the ’70s. “I told Richard I felt so disconnected from the world I had known,” Maya recalled. “And he said, ‘The best music can come out of that.’ It was certainly different. I’d be writing lyrics upstairs, and Blaqstarr would be doodling downstairs, and I’d hear bass lines through the floorboards. I’d get inspired and leave the baby monitor on and go down to the studio. There is almost no cellphone reception at my house, and we couldn’t always find our land lines. It was easy to shut the outside world out. And I was making music for me again.”

lolololol waht

i guess personally for me MIA wouldnt need to be so subtle and measured if she was atually more "authentic" bc her voice would feel like a "genuine voice of the oppressed" but when she is some rich broad getting a boner for terrorist dudes w/ hot nikes and watching utube in beverly hills not so much, i know that makes me an asshole but whatevs

During her interview for the school, Maya says, she told the admissions officer that if he didn’t accept her application, she would become a prostitute or a crackhead or the best criminal in the world. “I said to him, ‘Don’t make me do it,’ ” she says now, smiling. “ ‘If you don’t let me in, there’s only one option: I become a hooker.’ He said, ‘That is emotional blackmail.’ It might have been, but I couldn’t stand that one person had that much power over my life, that if he said yes or no, it would change everything.”

this is fucking outstanding, though

In 2003, Maya turned up here and said, ‘I heard you’ve been looking for me,’ ” Russell told me when I went to see him. “She decided that we were going to put out her music. And since Maya is able to will the universe and is an obvious force of nature, I found myself saying yes.”

hahahahaha

I have to say, it's kind of amusing how some of the excerpts are way less jarring/idiotic etc in the context of the piece.

Image: electrostimulation applied on a penis (HI DERE), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno. The quotes are way more amusing out of context.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I read the piece yesterday and thought, "Oh, she's become `unpredictable' in that boring star way."

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Like, for example, the Blackwater thing; it's pretty clear she's talking about appropriating a specific style and applying it to a different function from the flow of the piece, yet the narration tries to subvert the story its telling by editorializing about how the idea doesn't make any sense when it actually does.

Image: electrostimulation applied on a penis (HI DERE), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

the few people who court controversy these days seem to be trying way too hard in my opinion

either that or we've all been paying attention to this sort of thing so long that it'd take a totally loose cannon to really get my attention
