The photo in the NYT obit makes him look like he still might have been mad about that joke 50 years later.

dan m, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to read the obit & got wrapped up in the story about female genital mutilation. ugh.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

oh rite

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know if the obit is still online. It's from last month.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

it's okay. reading about the 13 year old who died as a result of genital mutilation is enough for me for now.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey Jordan, I have some Jew News for ya:
I made matzo ball soup this week!

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Ooh, I love that stuff. Mostly the ballz. How did it come out?

mmmmm pollution

the shadows fall away from the lake so that's sunrise, i'm guessing that's early morning fog from the lake rather than pollution.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 23:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I read those posts too quickly:

reading about the 13 year old who died as a result of genital mutilation is enough for me for now.

Addressing various posts throughout today:

My birthday, I am planning nothing for it, nor do I really want to. I take the La Lechera stance on my own birthday.

Kenan, that Derek Baily is one of my favorite study/reading albums.

Jesse, I should sell you my bike. I have major bike guilt for neglecting it for so long.

Really great fucking album that I'm listening to right now that I haven't heard in a long time: RJD2 - Deadringer.

Jeff, Thursday, 20 September 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah yes, Dr. Kevin, but wouldn't the wind be blowing from the west, moving the fog back out over the lake? HMMMMM?

Truth be told, when driving to and from work I've seen more fog than smog, especially in the morning.

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I will buy your bike.

I am tired.

Did you hear about the drive-by shooting in front of T's? Apparently it was a few days ago--someone in a moving car shot at a parked car, and someone in the parked car returned fire.

Roving Scandanavian lesbian gangs??

Jesse, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:47 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, so I've turned into this big Regina Spektor fan in the course of the past hour.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Are you drunk?

You laugh until you cry/
You cry until you laugh

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:00 (sixteen years ago) link

This is how it works/
You peer inside yourself/
You take the things you like/
And try to love the things you took

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Dude, there is nothing to recommend this woman except that she's hot.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

You're drunk and I'm bitter. This will never work.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:03 (sixteen years ago) link

How about this?

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:03 (sixteen years ago) link

not my thing, brah. Sub-Feist.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Sur-Feist in my book!

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:08 (sixteen years ago) link

It did, though, remind me of this video, which is superior by orders of magnitude.

You know I love ya, Eric.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Naw, I understand. I got a soft spot for the quirky Lillith Fair.

If only we were in the same hood, we could get in some Golden Tee before bed.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I know! I'm so far away, though. And should have gone to sleep two hours ago.

That video, though... man, that was the golden age of music videos. Nobody bothers anymore. No need. :(

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I like "Fidelity." I think I gave it a 7/10.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Shitty videos with the same scheme.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's a great one, though, also from the golden age.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm going to go to bed finally (not having Kr around brings out my worst habits) and listen to the new M83 ambient album.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:20 (sixteen years ago) link

uh... hey Rod, there's a minimum bail for what you're doing there if you get caught. Just telling you, as a bro.

*mumble mumble creepy motherfuck*

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:24 (sixteen years ago) link

night, john.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I ahd forgotten just how RONG the 80's were until I watched some Rod Stewart videos again! Jesus god!

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:27 (sixteen years ago) link

What thread on ILM was it where I was defending "Tonight's The Night"? I mean, that's old school, but this tells more of the Rod story than I remembered. I take it all back. What an asshole, srsly.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:30 (sixteen years ago) link

In "Infatuation", I love how he really shakes and all each time building up to "Oh no! Not again!"

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:33 (sixteen years ago) link

And at one point he points to the blown-up photo behind him, like "It's her! I'm infatuated with her!"

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Right, like it's a childhood crush instead of an elaborate project of spying and photo snapping. "Infatuation" my foot. *shudder*

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:36 (sixteen years ago) link

speaking of my foot, though... I love my bright red Pumas. I like to wear them with colors like black and white and grey so they stand out. Does this make me as ridiculous as Rod in the "Some Guys" video? Because I don't want to give off that vibe, and if I have been, I would like to apologize to everyone who has ever seen me.

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Oops, that first video of the two shitty ones was supposed to be Cheap Trick's "Don't Be Cruel", not Melissa McClelland, whom I like but would not impose on anyone here.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Keep the red Pumas. Embrace your inner Rod.

Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:42 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost haha.. no need to repost, I know it as well as the tom petty one!

First it's Windowlicker, then it's Tales from the Crypt. Either way, it's really funny.

Best line: "Hold on a minute/Before we go much further/Give me a buck/So I can buy a rubber". Sexy as all hell!

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 07:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, also remember the video for "Our Love's In Jeopardy?"

kenan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 07:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah yes, Dr. Kevin, but wouldn't the wind be blowing from the west, moving the fog back out over the lake? HMMMMM?

wind blows from areas of low pressure to areas of high pressure. if there's a low over the lake and a high over land it you'll get a lake wind. or perhaps there is no wind on the morning of that photo. or perhaps it the wind isn't strong enough to move the fog, the rising sun could be burning it off over the lake but the sun's rays reached land yet. plenty of things.

holy fuck do i need a cigarette.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 20 September 2007 08:01 (sixteen years ago) link

JEEZIZ FUCKIN CHRIST

ok so here in the middle of a very nice chicago evening, my neighbors and I have been having drama about this car alarm. This started at maybe 1:10... before my last post, even. Car alarm. Really loud one. I figured it would stop, because it always does. Even as I type the fucker is STILL going off, and loud as a siren. It's a little after 4:30 now. It woke me up real good, and went on for a really long time, and I knew the nuisance couldn't be limited to just me. I called the cops. I was not the first person to do that, apparently, because when I went downstairs to wait for the cops, there were already two other people, a young couple, dressed in not-especially-attractive robes. I rolled them cigarettes, and they marveled at how even though there wasn't a filter, it didn't make them cough. That made me happy.

(Update in real time in the middle of the story: the tow truck just hooked the thing up and is about to pull out. The car alarm is still going off.)

Ok, so the cops show up, this must have been around 2:30, over an hour after we called. Keep in mind there's a very loud car alarm going off in our ears this whole time. The cops show up. The only substantial thing that either of them says is, "Whaddya want me to do, shoot it?" They call a tow truck, tell us it's going to be a long time before a tow truck shows up, ticket the car and drive off, leaving us with the same problem as before.

Rick (that's the dude, obv) says, "You want a beer or something?" I do not want a beer, and somehow in the same exact instant that I decide that I don't want a beer, I decide what I do want.

"Let's cover this car in garbage," I say.

The rest of the story tells itself, really, except that at one point Rick grabbed a big piece of metal and I was like WHOA no we don't want to scratch up the paint permanently, just cover it in garbage.

So me and my neighbors totally broke open a bunch of nasty-ass bags of nasty-ass garbage and dumped them on a car. And then we went our separate ways. And the end of that story is already in the middle.
