The Terrors - Assemble Not Thyself
The Congos - Ark of The Covenant

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Under Mi Sleng Teng famous for not having a bass line? What? The sleng teng is one of the most famous bass lines (riddims) in reggae! It gave birth to ragga...It was not, contrary to popular belief, produced using a tinny casio keyboard preset. Tony Asher was the keyboardist who recorded it for King Jammy.

Other terrific bass lines...

Almost everything from Studio One-Throw me Corn, Real Rock, Answer, Lecture etc. etc.

Winston Riley's Stalag riddim

I could go on...

cybele, Saturday, 8 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

isn't "Spirit in the Sky's" bassline just quarter notes all on like the same note?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, "Dancing In Your Head" obviously. Probably "Free Jazz" too. For rock choices, "24 Hours", "Tom Sawyer", "The Lemon Song", maybe "The Sprawl".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Counting Crows - Hangin' Around
awesome! crazy, unhinged, unneccesary noodling that
perfectly matches the restlessness of the lyrics

Beatles - Everybody Has Something To Hide...
This bass line has been described as "the birth of
modern rock bass playing." It's really great, anyway.
Paul is my favorite rock bassist, BTW, he NEVER
plays what you think he will.

The bassline is the whole riff, innit? Besides, it's all about the distortion...

Why in the world isn't Deee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" somewhere on here yet?

Nick Mirov (nick), Saturday, 8 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think "Groove is in the Heart" uses a sample from Herbie Hancock "Bring Down the Birds" from the Blowup sndtrk.
Check out this samples FAQ

Was "Peaches" by the Stranglers mentioned on this thread (I can't be arsed, but it didn't leap out in a cursory scan)?

I really want to find the mix of 'We're Ready' that's just the trumpet sample for about 2 minutes then that pulverising bassline alone with some subtle little high hat ticks. It's at the start of the Slimzee mix from Richie Vibe Vee's 1Xtra show - does anyone know it?
