pac does all that too tho. and i would definitely think of biggie's delivery as "more uniform" (tho obviously less so that gucci, who kind of makes a point of it) than pac's

ok listening to tupac now and i definitely stand by what i said. it's got more to do with what type of rapper they are than some overreaching similarity dividing them from the rest of rap, and yeah gucci is definitely the worst of the lot in that regard (although i prefer him to pac)

whatever, i think if you feel that
pac does all that too tho. and i would definitely think of biggie's delivery as "more uniform"
that's the opposite of how i feel and what i'm trying to express and it's just a matter of *perception* or whatever
― django weingart (samosa gibreel), Monday, 24 May 2010 21:37 (thirteen years ago) link
no really, i don't understand what your previous post was trying to say
― upper mississippi sh@key mo (The Reverend), Monday, 24 May 2010 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link
oh, just that i feel like these are broader categories i could fit a bunch of (maybe all) rappers in (those who have more straightforward delivery/vocalization and those who dont) rather than something unique to boosie & biggie/gucci & pac. and also that while i agree with you that gucci has the most uniform and least danymic delivery, i like him better than tupac.

so Rick Ross has been doing some interesting shit that I feel like is really similar to what (PARTLY) propelled Jay-Z to his current status as indie fandom's favorite stadium rapper by bringing in fashion/style/cultural influences from the vanguard of culture BUT he's actually rapping BETTER now than ever, rather than worse than ever, and also he's doing within a hip-hop framework rather than pop...like when Jay reached into the drake/kid cudi "hit songs by rappers that aren't rap songs" formula on BP3
kinda interesting, also curious that it doesn't seem to be making much noise (granted it's only been a couple songs and he had the misfortune of naming his first foray into this new style after a gaudy, way over the top Robb Report watch brand Audemars Piguet rather than the ultra-hip designers he's been name-checking lately)
also his new outfits are totally lol
all black mink puffy fur vest > all black anything

or maybe none of that is true i dont know
i guess "on the next one" is hip-hop more than pop and is arguably his most "avant" single/video from that group

yeah j0rdan & i have discussed that pac=boosie biggie=gucci theory before, it makes sense in a reductive way -- i think pac>biggie but gucci>boosie tho
― its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i think the analogy makes sense but i definitely don't think there's any correlation between people who like Boosie more also liking Pac more etc. (for me it's Boosie/Biggie).

i was thinking of this more and more and last night it hit me that the pac/biggie analogy doesn't really work
cuz Gucci really most reminds me of a down south MF Doom, that's the rapper he most reminds me of
they both have these same cadences, very identifiable cadences they use a lot, and both sort of thrive on left-field punchlines and odd word choices

Have we talked about Lil B's "The Age of Information"?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=corY-FZAZog&feature=player_embedded
The beat is absolutely gorgeous, and how it flips throughout the song? B's a fucking dope producer. And he's rapping on this... like actually rapping rapping. I like it.

yeah this is really good -- i like the dissonance b/w the primo-ish vibe of the track & then b rapping about the internet -- shit comes off like a cormega track tho -- weird & good look imo

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 May 2010 04:26 (thirteen years ago) link
And that rhyme scheme in the first verse? Damn! Like it's been a while since I've praised someone's rhyme scheme, but it's just such a contrast to B's normal speak-rapping that it's almost a shock.

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 May 2010 04:29 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i would love to see an interview with him where he talks about why he does what he does, cuz he can obv rap 'normally' if he wants to and he doesn't lose any of what makes him compelling. & yet he rarely does it. even on this track he acts like if the first verses didn't even happen. what a guy.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 May 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link
Definitely. And like, most of what he's saying on the track has been said before a million times, but it doesn't sound preachy or pedantic... it's just fuckin' B, pondering this shit, to use your word, J0rdan. Like, he completely sells it.
