the noose is a real big clue.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The "I." and "II." on the map also confuse me. I would suck as a real life treasure hunter.

it makes sense......................................does it to you? (Z S), Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

lol. the I. refers to the first landmark and the II. is the second thing to look for, in that vicinty.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I was just trying to find the treasure! I know what the landmark is but couldn't find a place near it that looked like the drawing.

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

the I. and II. are not necessarily two distinct rocks

cozen, Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

you guys are making this game sound awesome, is there anybody here that doesn't like it?

I can't imagine ever not wanting to play this game.

MPx4A, Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:37 (thirteen years ago) link

It's pretty great, but suffers from sandbox syndrome; I get lost and distracted constantly and lose the thread of the game proper. Like I don't think I've talked to the chick who saved me since I went to the new town and I gather that's the crux of the game.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 23 May 2010 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd recommend playing bonnie's missions forks; that way you'll get the lasso

cozen, Sunday, 23 May 2010 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the noose map is kind of messed up. you have to poke around the area for a bit to find the treasure.

jeff, Sunday, 23 May 2010 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

is there another spot to find boar other than the one just to the north of bonnie's ranch? my bait is just pulling cougars and wolves now. need to level up my hunting skillz.

I'm enjoying this a lot right now, but I'll admit that my enthusiasm for all the GTA games I've played dropped off significantly after a few weeks, so we'll see if the same thing happens here. However, I think RDR might last longer; the controls seem more intuitive and the missions don't seem as frustrating (so far) and it's more fun riding around in the wilderness alone than in a city full of people.

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 23 May 2010 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link

we just need a bully in this engine now please R*

each one of these missions is a really fun set piece. kudos R!

taylory dayne (goole), Monday, 24 May 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

mission design has been a huuuuge weak spot in every sandbox game i've ever played, up to and incl GTAIV. so, tears of thankfulness over here.

taylory dayne (goole), Monday, 24 May 2010 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

has anyone moved on to the new territories? i really hope those areas open up the world. i like what i'm playing so far, but this sandbox is mostly sand and i only find it so interesting to ride that horse around.

jeff, Monday, 24 May 2010 08:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Has the MP posse happened yet? I need to be eased in or I'll let the prospect of being autoshot by feral children put me off the idea altogether.

I shot the cannibal and hog-tied the victim so I could help him back to civilisation, but the ungrateful twat just ran off screaming when I cut him loose. In retrospect I shoulda just hogtied the cannibal and popped him on the train tracks or near some wolves.

What would happen if you dropped the cannibal near some other cannibals

MPx4A, Monday, 24 May 2010 09:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Try dropping the cannibal near Toto Coelo.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 24 May 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd love to get into that, but i won't have time for another couple days

i'm gonna talk more about this game, so *SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS*

...

i think i'm around the 40% mark, in the game's second act in Mexico, and i haven't interacted with one indian yet. i don't think there are any in the game at all. i think this is significant, somehow. i like that the game is in 1911, a "late western" about the closing of the frontier rather than an early one about opening it. maybe this is just to allow them to put more interesting guns in the game, or riff off the meta-westerns like the wild bunch or there will be blood (a town called plainview? really?). plus it doesn't shy away from politics at all; every other dude wants to talk to you about federal power. anyway, the setting's early-20th-century-ness is really present and apparent to me and i'm really liking it.

speaking of politics, there's the politics of Rockstar's media reputation, and i'm getting ongoing chuckles from the (what i take to be) anti "hot coffee" vibe of the whole thing. no matter which path you take, the John Marston character is (so far) faithful to his wife as a given. the prostitutes say stuff like "i hate to see a man with the condition of a dry pecker" (no shit i think i heard this) and our killer just says "my wife wouldn't like that" or something.

taylory dayne (goole), Monday, 24 May 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the prostitute line was "I hate to see a man with such a dry pecker... can I help?"

forksclovetofu, Monday, 24 May 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

ha i kind of deadwood-ified it

Anyone notice that the gang fights in multiplayer are wayyyy harder than in single player? I guess youre supposed to take them on with more people than my posse of two, but I like the change of pace of an actual challenge. SP is fun and all but pretty fucking easy.

mayor jingleberries, Monday, 24 May 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Gonna get a chance to play this while housesitting over the next week and a half, so excited u guys.

dan m, Monday, 24 May 2010 18:19 (thirteen years ago) link

oh man this game is sweet

re the injuns thing, i was thinking before i played the game whether they would include any. in the start intro, when your man is on the train, there is something said by the man and daughter in front about it I'm sure, something to do with losing their land. i might be mistaken tho

anyway this game. woah.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

and haha have you tried getting on your horse when your stood directly behind

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

nice that you can still move about freely when on the trains too

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

the "shoot 5 flying birds from a moving train" challenge was like the chillest assignment I have ever received.

loving the treasure map idea, seems challenging.

i'm so early on in this game that something new keeps happening really frequently. it's friggin exciting, but with enough quiet moments to take a breather and decide what to get up to next.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

first bug i've found tho, my horses main has changed colour (or is that supposed to happen?). it's definitely the same horse, as i've maxed the stamina on it.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

erm, "mane"?

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

really love the horse control in fact, altho sometimes tricky shooting whilst mounted. without the slow-mo thing i'd be fooked.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 24 May 2010 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link

How to win at shooting: lock target, quickly shoot, lock target, quickly shoot

I'm trying not to read much of this thread because of tiny spoilers but I agree with whoever said you should be able to drop off hog-tied criminals at jail. Like when someone steals a horse you should be able to get the horse *and* the criminal. What really happens when I return the horse with the hog-tied criminal on top is the guy I helped takes the horse with criminal still on and rides away.

Many criminals that I hogtie end bring back to town end up being called kidnapped victims or something under the stats screen. There's never a bounty or anything but these criminals on the back of my horse shouldn't be called victims and If there is no reward I guess I might as well kill them for a couple bucks :/

But loving this game.
