2 great docs i have watched:

Fall From Grace (about those terrifying westboro motherfuckers)
Impaler - best doc ive seen in years

Fists all gnarly and dick-dented (jjjusten), Saturday, 22 May 2010 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Fall From Grace was poorly made, I thought. I really hate when I encounter that, a really interesting subject matter, but poorly made doc.

Jeff, Saturday, 22 May 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

its been a while since i saw it, and it certainly wasnt balanced (not that thats really possible) but idk, it was kind of terrifying and pulled back the curtain a little bit, at least for me.

I watched F for Fake this morning – it was so much colorful FUN!

frozen cookie (Abbott), Saturday, 22 May 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

We Live in Public is pretty great; the craft is, like, 7 out of 10, but the subject is so weird and compelling.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Saturday, 22 May 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

The "First Person" episode on that guy was great, and really interesting. Having seen it makes me kind of worried the docu wld be a redux of it – was tat the case?

frozen cookie (Abbott), Sunday, 23 May 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Up! I'll be watching it like six times!

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 04:53 (thirteen years ago) link

weird how that, Wall-E and Monsters Inc are available but the rest don't see to be

Nhex, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 06:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the Starz network has a contract.
I swear, the first twelve minutes of Up is some of the most effective filmmaking ever; tears me up every time.

Cube 2 is awful and horrible (as if you needed to be told)

|8 l) u_u (bnw), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i might eventually see it anyway just out of curiosity, liked the first one... but that bad, huh?

Nhex, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

definitely recommend The Messenger; really really good filmmaking, quality acting, excellent script, utterly apolitical

It's not as good as the first, but thought it was an okay effort. The ending was pleasantly downbeat, though I could have done with a different explanation for the construct. Better than most of the f/x-challenged movies that the SyFy Channel shows.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Triangle is a pretty good mindfuck for a B movie. the cover and summary make it out to be a slasher flick which its thankfully not.

guys: hugo and the dragon
this is REALLY weird, kind of a Team America that takes itself seriously

Big thumbs up for "The Maid", very smart, very engaging and it never goes where you think it will go.

mentioned this on my weird netflix streaming review thread, but "dear zachary" (doc) just destroyed me. do not watch unless you are emotionally prepared, it is depressing and brutal, but amazing.

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Friday, 25 June 2010 06:20 (thirteen years ago) link

yea dear zachary is rough. a lotta the editing/music really plays into it too & felt soo manipulative to me (tho is it really manipulative if theres no other way to react to the subject matter? idk)

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 June 2010 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link

OK for all zero people who were curious, "We Live in Public" is notably different than the (still worth watching) episode of First Person about JOsh Harris, which only talked about his Gilligan obsession and his We Live In Public site (the one w/just him & his girlfriend) and none of his other projects (or fucking Luvvy). Josh Harris is the craziest guy, so "We Live in Public" was great for discovering the many varieties of ways in which this guy was/is insane. I think the last 20 minutes showed Josh at his most unhinged. OTOH that was the part with the worst & biggest quantity of shitty voiceover. I did not really need an annoying narrator to tell me that Facebook is sort of being like watched in public, too.

Mr & Mrs The Devil (Abbott), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Watched that the other day. Wow, I hated him. Therefore hating the movie.

Jeff, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:55 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah judging purely from the first person ep he seemed to be a grade a crepe, not sure i want more of him tbh

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:37 (thirteen years ago) link

although, y'know morbid curiosity and all that so

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

or fucking Luvvy

this is grade a quality unhingedness tho. i really enjoyed hearing abt vc investors' take on it

I can't believe so many people are recommending Tyson, I thought it was HORRIBLE.

All the Futurama DTV movies just got put up along with the four season sets, as well as both seasons of Pushing Daisies and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the first two great seasons of Veronica Mars.

Nhex, Thursday, 1 July 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I thought Tyson was a poorly made doc but Tyson himself was a very interesting trainwreck in the interview.

While discussing their Q2 results, Netflix revealed that they'll be releasing a software-only version of their Playstation 3 streaming service. Netflix's CEO called the update "major," saying it will sport a new UI and debut by October.

Moon is pretty good in a sci-fi / twilight zone way. Sam Rockwell is great.

session 9 was creepy and then depressing.
