Lauren,

I'm amazed at your devotion to curry squid!

one month passes...
I had the mixed grill via takeout at Kinara last night ... so nice, esp the 4 different sauces, but an hour ago, mega-burning ass.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 June 2006 13:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought Tamarind's prix-fixe 3 course lunch was pretty good (I didn't pay). It was either that or Shake Shack (there was no line and it was Friday WTF?)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 16 June 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

sadly, the health dept seems to have shut down the chinese man's cart operation on delancey. fie!

Sripraphai and Pio Pio are 2 of my favorite places in the whole city

what does Dan S think, if anything, of EV Thai vegan spot Pukk? Am meeting Canadian visitor friends in an hour, one a vegan, need to take them somewhere more distinctive than Zen Palate perhaps.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i very much doubt dan has tried it. what about counter, also on 1st ave? it's veg/vegan bistro-ish food. good wine list.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

we'll look if they balk at Pukk. thx!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i admire your resolve to stay away from zen palate.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

stay away from republic, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

is that the noodle place?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i dig republic and all 90s leftover techno asian eats spots

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I hv gone to ZP by default in the past; it just fails to excite my very unexcitable palate.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, it sucks. no a/c, terrible service.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Gobo is marginally better if you have to go vegan

probably more $$ though

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

umm, nice try Lauren, I've been there twice. I said, "wow, I've always wanted to eat dinner INSIDE AN IPOD".

it was okay, I was really uncomfortable, too small.

My sister, the pastry chef, was dating a guy who was a sous-chef for like Ducasse or someone, and he said he went there and had the duck and it was great. My sister was suprised because he's one of those eat bone-marrow animal part foodies who always "mocks" vegans. My sister's all like, dude, that was MOCK duck, and he was like no way. Sure enough...

Republic was TOO LOUD TO HAVE A CONVERSATION.

But like, I live less then 10 blocks from Sri Pra Pha, I'm ruined for Thai food forever. Actually, around the corner is another lesser known place, Khao Homm, which is also wonderful if a little more standard. More low-key atmosphere. In any case, both of those places destroy all other Thai food I've had in NYC or elsewhere.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Sri Pra Phai, sorry.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Republic was TOO LOUD TO HAVE A CONVERSATION
OTM
you have to eat at the bar
chicken udon's pretty incredible though

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i like republic, but i also hate conversation

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

WHY GO TO REPUBLIC? SEATING SUXXXXX

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

what is up with all the crazies eating boxed deli sushi in such hot weather?

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

spoiled fish - malarkey? or effective way?

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

we went to Counter, thx lauren! i enjoyed my cauliflower risotto.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

and me.

killy (baby lenin pin), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Has anyone ever been to the restaurant directly left of Panna II?
I think it's just a decoy.

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i've never gone left. is there a restaurant below panna ii now too?

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

sigri? the new sri lankan place?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

so at 2am I'm driving home by myself and think, why, this is the first real oppurtunity I've had to check out the taco truck. So I get off the BQE, drive a few blocks past my house to the 52nd st. 7 stop on roosevelt ave and sure enough, there it is, with two dudes waiting in front. I wait a bit, order 2 tacos, pollo and carnitas, wait a minute, tell them I'll eat it there, so she doesn't put any hot sauce on, leaving it up to me. She hands me 1 plate w/ two tacos, the aforementioned meats, some onions and cilantro and that's it, proper taco style. I put on the hot sauce and squeeze some limes and by 2:10 I'm eating two of the best tacos I've ever had. Fucking awesome. I wonder how late the truck stays there...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 August 2006 05:26 (seventeen years ago) link

now you need to visit the arepa lady.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Republic is pretty good.
Pukk is pretty good.
Zen Palate is gross.

What does Dan S. think about the Pink Pony? Once I had the pepper steak and it was fantastic. Once I had the cassoulet and it was gross. Haven't tried other stuff. Most things seem overpriced.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:09 (seventeen years ago) link

spend a little bit more and go to lucien.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

lauren otm

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never had a meal at the Pink Pony, though I bought some coffee for Bob Last there.

I went to Lucien w/ Lauren once, I think. I only know the bistros in brooklyn, the best being Bachus on Atlantic and Pit Stop on Columbia.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, a friend used to waitress at Lucien - too bad I missed my chance.

Has anyone ever been to the restaurant directly left of Panna II?
I think it's just a decoy.

If Panna II is the one on the top right side in that quad of Indian places, it suxx. Terrible terrible food not even to be redeemed by absurdly cheap prices.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I JUST HAD THE TACOS AGAIN! STILL GOOD! 2:40 and there was a line. You have to understand, this isn't like, some hip location downtown, it's fucking Woodside.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 August 2006 06:25 (seventeen years ago) link

i understand.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 11 August 2006 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

pink pony hasn't been good in years. was much better when it was just a simple coffeshop where you could get a sandwich served by a member of ruby falls.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 August 2006 14:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Hurting, no hot spiced tea on the house for you.

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Friday, 11 August 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Gobo charges what no restaurant should be legally allowed to charge for seitan/tofu dishes. Food was decent, but I will never go back there on principle. (Also their dumb slogan offends me)

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

"yo bro it's gobo"?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

"Food for the five senses"

WTF? Do I need to hear my food?

THIRD NIGHT IN A ROW FOR THE TACO!

This time I was more drunk and had taken the train forever so it was that much more sweet. 3:30 or so and it was still there, dude in front of me getting the bistek tortas, I'll have to try that. The girlfriend got the Vegetariano which was lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, sour cream and cheese. They coulda thrown some radish in there or something...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 12 August 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

seven months pass...
because i cant find the other ask dan thread:

mr selzer, being a man of humor and taste, what are you feelin on this sound of silvah record by the lcd sound system? im diggin it this am, but this is a music that has gotten quite away from me (or vise versa -- there are a coupla reasons we euthanized Repellent, after all) so im askin...

to play Rock Critic for a blink, its striking me as a damned fine comment on the (us) kids and growin up and/or livin in these days, and throws up some damned fine little pop, but is there more (or "less")? is it just plain good? is there too much thinking and smirking amidst the fun? is it too cute for anyones good?

i'll say this, it does make me think kraftwerk is a halfway decent idea again for the 1st time in a forever long time.

yr thoughts, sir...
