I think parasites that prey on humans sorta belong in their own category. ordinary bedbugs and ticks scare me way more than any fancy egg-backed toads or tongue-eating crabs. at a distance, even the most monstrous animals can seem almost cute, but the moment a living thing burrows into my body, it shuts off the part of my brain that goes "awwwwwwwwww."

OK so somehow while looking for more ideas for this thread I just wound up looking at tons of pics of Peruvian guinea pig meals. They serve the suckers up whole legs and tails and all! O_O

have had this, in peru! there's not a lot of meat. you can eat the toenails like unpopped corn kernels.

I think I am not so much freaked out by the isopod as: why the hell does this fish have human teeth???

posted this the other day in a spider thread, but i'm just gonna go ahead and post it again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWASwBWyUXI

prying it off with a stick like that had to have been as satisfying, if not more satisfying, than lighting the whole thing on fire

hahahaha I was going to post the fish with human teeth but I thought that was only something I was freaked out by

it's just not right

coelancanths are awesome tho! They are so ancient and huge and also if you catch them in Animal Crossing they are worth tons of bells <3

I am surprised at the revulsion for the coconut crab - it seems to be pretty firmly planted on the good side of the arthropod divide

retarded candle burning at both ends (dyao), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I have eaten more guinea pigs than I can remember now after seven months in Peru. Better than rabbit, not as good as chicken. lots of dark meat and little bones.

bug holocaust (sleeve), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:50 (thirteen years ago) link

coconut crabs: i like them i just shudder to think about how if given the opportunity they would surely open up a baby's skull and casually help themselves to the brains

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I was going to post this eye-leech, but it sounds like the loa loa worm has it beat.

Daleks in NYC (Leee), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 01:52 (thirteen years ago) link

tbf it wouldn't actually help itself to the brains after opening up the baby's skull, it would call its buddy first

http://www.hemmy.net/images/animals/hugecrab01.jpg

then they would divvy up and share.

Daleks in NYC (Leee), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

What is the fish that looks a lot like the viperfish but has giant, almost opaque eyeballs that are a solid milky white? And kind of a more elongated head? I had a picture book as a kid with a giant full page photo of two of their faces and it was the "scare yourself by turning to it" page for sure.
