wait: isn't there an old twins logo w/ twins slapping 5 chanting "win twins!"

i'm not crazy, i swear.

it took me forever to realize that there was an m in the expos logo. it always lookied like "e l b" to me. i thought it was a tribute to some canadian prog rock band.

What does mookie have against caterpillars/??

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a fondness for that Expos logo, too, although whenever I look at it, I never actually see the "M": I only see "ELB."

Compare it, for example, to this one, which tries to do something similar:
http://www.selection-j.com/img/new-fbf00-nba-013_a.jpg

Even if you don't see the cleverly inserted "M" and "B," you still see it as a glove with a ball in it.

This reminds me that when I was in 8th grade, I designed magnets with all MLB team logos on them (meticulously markered on cardboard), and kept track of the standings on my bedroom closet door.

This is sort of beautiful.

i love caterpillars, i just don't find them emblematic of the montréal baseball club. more fitting would be a spaceship, a question mark, or a basket of poutine. (i'm fond of their logo too, actually--i just think it's kind of a mistake. like the expos themselves, more or less.)

the red sox logo is simple, dated, and kinda classic--i wouldn't like it if it were for an expansion club, but somehow it conveys history. to me.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:03 (fifteen years ago) link

wait...so: historically speaking, aren't the names of the reds and red sox functionally the same? the reds started out as the red stockings or red legs or something, right?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

man, i forgot how totally brilliant the old brewers logo was.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

thumbs up from me on the old brewers logo and that expos logo.
they are sort of classically genius graphic design, sort of like the arrow in the fedex logo.

also, i was recently discussing those two logos with a friend, and we looked up the history of the expos logo, because we couldn't figure out why it would say "elb." apparently it's "expos le basebol," like lee said, because of the world's fair. i think it's kinda funny that it's named after an event that's no longer part of the popular conciousness (at least for people under 30 or so).

the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i think it's fitting really. since the expos themselves are no longer part of the popular conciousness for most montréal'ers under the age of 30¡

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

man i was like fourteen or so before i figured out that expos logo is an m. it was like the last season of the brewers using the glove logo when i figured out it's an 'm' and a 'b'. i'm an idiot.

new padres logo suxx btw, looks like the logo for some new condo development. bring back the beltin friar.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I wouldn't mind the friar mixed w/ the mid-80s brown pinstripes. Only bring back the OLD old Padres look (that is, the color scheme / organization that made the Pads unis look like old Big Mac wrappers) if everyone gets outfitted w/ Oscar Gamble fros.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 22:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a weird fascination with the padres camo uniforms... don't hate me.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 22:20 (fifteen years ago) link

it's such backhanded tribute to the troops - 'we think yr unis look ass - see?'; plus san diego's a navy town so to show their support they dress up like the army - gee thanx!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 22:23 (fifteen years ago) link

could you imagine the sailor suits? isn't there naval camo?

Haha, I feel better. I wasn't going to admit my ignorance...

gygax!, I like the camo unis too. I was the only one I knew who did, though.

http://learningthefaith.com/New%20Images/phillies_logo.gif

this logo is a total failure to communicate anything whatsoever about the team. if i wasn't a baseball fan i'd have no idea what this logo was for. & what's the significance of the stars over the i's¿

this is an attempt to bring back a sorta-modernized version of the phillies' logo circa 1950 (the "whiz kids" world series team)-to-1970 (their last year in connie mack stadium, before they moved into the vet).

i still like the 1971-early 1990s phillies logo best, though. and so does outkast.

We know that people are offended by it. So we will continue to use it.
