I Can't Find The Recent Thread On Recently Rediscovered Singers That Mentioned Jim Ford So I'll Start A New One For Him

It sounds a bit like Swamp Dogg, too, which is great because who else sounds anything like Swamp Dogg?

The only (solo) Toussaint I have heard is FRom a Whisper to a Scream, which is great but strangely subdued. I would def like to check out Southern Nights

when I found out that Eddie Hinton played on Laura Nyro's Christmas and the Beads of Sweat LP I loved it even more...and his solo stuff is really good, too...

I've heard both sides of the Jim Ford question. "Harry Hippie" is a good song, and Sterling Harrison does Ford/Womack's "Surprise, Surprise" on Harrisons' posthumous South of the Snooty Fox, which I've talked about elsewhere on here. Best thing on the record, I think. Eddie Hinton's "I'm Still Your Baby" leads off the new Bettye LaVette reocrd. I always thought Hinton sounded too much like Otis Redding, but that's just me, and he was a fine songwriter.

It has Spooner Oldham, James Burton, Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal and Mouse and the moutherfucking Traps on it! I need to find a copy of this. I'm also looking out for those early 70's Link Wray records, what I've heard of them has been amazing.

You mean the 'vocal' records? If so, then, yes, the one that I believe is s/t with Link looking all cigar store Indian on the cover, that record rules the heavens and earth.

yeah, the vocal ones recorded in the "3-track shack"... they're all collected on a 2-cd set now.

speaking of 70s Link Wray, The Link Wray Rumble (Epic) is one of my favorites by anybody, from any time. Trying to get with the times, maybe, he Links them good: "Country Boy, " dedicated to Duane Allman, assimilates Duane's guitar sound and then-prime Van Morrison's vocal style (pitch-wise, that is; he doesn't try to scat sing etc) "Good Time Joe" really absorbs some kind of Who-vian guitar riff, and of course he sings his ass off on this and Tony Joe's "Back Woods Preacher Man," and his own "She's That Kind Of Woman," which is his extrapolation of (maybe?) There's A Riot Goin On-era Sly times Van (not that Link didn't already sound like that; kind of between Van and Alvin Lee, I guess). Eddie Hinton was mainly a writer-arranger-multi-instrumentalist, but his voice, although too strained at times, can work like Doug Sahm's, or xpost "Mouse and the fucking Traps." UK Label Zane's (authorized) The Songwriting Sessions, Vol. 1 (Dear Y'all) and 2 (Playin' Around) are a little uneven, but lots of great stuff; Vol. 3 (Beautiful Dream) is spottier. I'd like to hear Ford, but< if it matters, Stephen Thomas Erlewine's All Music reviews claim his records were pretty uneven, sometimes way too cute. Still this one seems like it might be worth checking out, and that Dale Hawkins too (but naw, not another one of those 25-dollar one-plays, please...)

I must sadly, and unfortunately, very reliably, report of the tragic passing of dear Jim Ford this past Sunday. Initial information regarding his death at the age of 64 is sparse, and memorial information is still pending.

I have known and loved Jimmy for over 50 years - as family and friend, I will focus on his bright star this Thanksgiving somewhat . If you would to help or be involved in a fitting memorial tribute to this big-hearted and talented man, contact me at ra✧✧✧@ct✧✧✧.o✧✧.

Nobody got this one yet? On the liner notes of the first one Jim called out Bobby Womack for ripping him off, on this one Bobby defends himself, saying well there was one song that I "traded" with him for some other songs.

i got it. about 5 really great songs, which is about what you can expect from "unreleased shit dead dude had in his trailer" type of release. stories about him make him out to be a complete fucking lunatic. my faves are "point of no return" (seriously, this is life-altering) and "mill valley"

found several cassette tapes with studio musings and songs from Jim Ford - Anyone know what to do with them> He was laid to rest last year, and the double CD album seemed to find almost everything he recorded in studio

Some of this material is like Gram Parsons at his most lackadaisical, inviting the "I like this guy and what he's trying to do but couldn't they have tightened the screws a little on this number?" response.

Had not known "Harry Hippie" was actually about Bobby Womack's brother and what happened to the brother afterward.
