for what it is, the only song to rival "All By Myself" is "Without You," I think

Winter of '75/'76: Not one, not two, but THREE epic songs with classical overtones (or that just pilfered from classical pieces) ridin' high on the charts: "All By Myself," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and "Could it Be Magic."

You kids today, no culture a-tall.

BTW, "Sunrise" = goosebumps every time.

Agreed, love the debut but don't forget Boats Against the Current — criminally underrated imo. I wrote a big piece about it here — there's also a few capsule reviews on the sidebar of his other stuff...

Very interesting piece, Matthew. That was the next album I wanted to get.

I knew there'd be some troopers on here who had taken a chance on the Carmen solo albums!

OTM! Terrific epic

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, Tim. That record's kind of a brilliant failure.

BTW, "Sunrise" = goosebumps every time.

Agreed. And the coda is a total gas...

what, no ELO hits that year?

I'm glad to find other people who are fans of this album!

what, no ELO hits that year?

The ELO that shared radio time with the other three ("Evil Woman") was about their unclassicalest, but you could count it I guess.

I have fond memories of "Make Me Lose Control" from VH1 in the summer of '88. It now sounds like a glossier, inferior, lyrically less-interesting version of "Overnight Sensation" (which I didn't hear until 1995), but I still kinda like it.

John Fredland (jfredland), Thursday, 25 January 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I have the same memory, John. Belinda Carlisle's contemporaneous "Circle in the Sand" also conjured a similar vibe. It helped that I was in the throes of my first serious infatuation.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 25 January 2007 00:23 (seventeen years ago) link

This thread inspired me to revisit "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again," which is much better than I remembered. I think I might have to dig deeper into Mr. Carmen's oeuvre.

John Fredland (jfredland), Sunday, 28 January 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't remember that I had this on CD (which adds 2 tracks) as well as on vinyl... this thread prompted me to bring it in the car and spin it 2x today!

Never thought about this... Was Brian really so directionless when he recorded an even crappier version of "On Broadway" for his "Adult Child" session two years later?

Oh wait, I guess "Shortnin' Bread" answers that question.

j/k, I LOVE Adult Child anyway. <3

The Carmen s/t really holds up tho!! Fun thread!

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Sunday, 28 January 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Surely there's a more deserving candidate for the title of "American McCartney", like Todd Rundgren or Billy Joel, maybe.

Monty, having just listened to "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" again, I've got to say that I think you've got that backward.

two weeks pass...
Boats Against the Current is great. Took me a couple of listens, for some reason. I had to sit and listen to it in the headphones.

so i'm listening to rachmaninoff's piano concerto no.2 and i'm like damn he's totally ripping off eric carmen! hahaha! okay, not really. but i don't think i knew that about all by myself. i am obviously the last person to know this.

I heard "Make Me Lose Control" at the cafeteria last week!

Carmen's greatest hits = first album I ever bought.

The video clips on Carmen's web site, which Tim linked to upthread, are pretty great.

"First new recording in over fifteen years" - wow.

timellison, Saturday, 28 December 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

''Make Me Lose Control'' is great, and really underplayed - it's always a pleasant surprise. Great example of the weird recurrence of doo-wop moves in that era (what's the thread for that?). Guess I should check out his album(s)? I've always hated ''Hungry Eyes'' after I realized he wasn't saying ''Concrete Eyes,'' is his stuff generally more like that?

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 28 December 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

Pop culture has spoiled me so much that I read this thread title as "Eric Cartman solo."

...and I just did the same, nearly 7 years after JF did!

zip-a-dee-doo-dah, motherfucker! (Turrican), Saturday, 28 December 2013 18:09 (ten years ago) link

Okay, actually, the hyper-processed, boxy acapella part on "Make Me Lose Control" may almost be in a category of its own, it's so cold and empty. The closest comparison I could make would be some of the stuff on the Beach Boys' Still Cruisin'. Not saying it doesn't sound great, but damn does it sound weird.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 29 December 2013 23:53 (ten years ago) link

love that new song, very "In My Room", and just read that Jeff Foskett (of Brian Wilson band fame) is part of the band, which makes total sense

Dominique, Friday, 3 January 2014 18:15 (ten years ago) link

Casino, so glad to hear you say "Make Me Lose Control" is good. A forgotten hit -- it charted higher than, Hungry Eyes"

I love Make Me Lose Control! Kinda belongs in that weird 80's doo-wop genre with Billy Joel's 'For the Longest Time' etc.

Casino otm about the weird deadness in the acappella part. Always pictured him singing that part playing chess with Death :)

ah the summer of '88. Cheap Trick's cover of "Don't Be Cruel" became their second biggest hit.

I still have nostalgic fondness for that cover, even though sometimes I think it might be terrible.

fyi Track 2 of tonight your mine 'Lost In the Shuffle' is Eagles-level horrible, not quite 'James Dean' but almost there. yikes.
