Old Skool classic "Compnded 1" (by Gordon Edge) has a synth line that sounds like it's straight out of a computer game. It's brilliant.

Ah, Spring Yard Zone brings back some memories. Actually I don't think it was one of my favorite pieces from the game, but some of the other stages are great. I'm thinking the underground one and the casino level.

Chris Huelsbeck's music for the Turrican games owns

do you know his katakis soundtrack? its very similar in part to rubicon and disco lunar modules.

was Gordon Edge his real name? i love that track, Katakis i'm sure i downloaded mp3s for ages ago but can't remember how it goes. i think Huelsbeck has made proper non-game recordings available to buy.

I have no idea whether Gordon Edge was his real name. I'd imagine not.

(crosspost.) yes and theyre all terible!! he obv thought "more instruments = beter music" and ditched the sid and went all faux orchestra kitsch. ew.

Midnite Funworld off the Felix album has a cool 'busy platformer' vibe

i think the song "white hotel" by dmx crew is pretty much entirely a lift of some lvl or other of some sonic game...

Everytime I play "Elaine" by Abba formy brother he says "HOLY SHIT IT'S SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" IT'S VERY FUNNY

"Together Again" by Janet Jackson sounds like one of the levels in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game where you have to walk along a wall outside and jump over some water/bridges I think (haven't played it for about eight years though).

Weird, I was thinking of starting this thread a couple weeks ago. One song I was thinking of was Alexander Robotnick's "Problemes d'Amour" which I think would match the 2nd level of Sonic 2 very well. The other one was Outkast's "I'll Call Before I Come" (well, an instrumental version at least), which doesn't remind me of any particular Sonic theme but that rubbery synth-bassline could easily score one of his adventures.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, come to think of it, lots of italo-disco could be used as Sonic the Hedgehog music.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:40 (nineteen years ago) link

haven't heard it, but it may not be an accident, as the main baddie in sonic is Dr. Robotnik...

meenieminey, Friday, 15 October 2004 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I fucking hope that is not a coincidence.

very true. kasso: walkman could definitely be the soundtrack of a rather relaxed sonic level.

Every now and then I hear some 80s pop/R&B production and basically think it sounds just like Sonic music, which mainly I guess means the Sonic people were listening to that stuff. I can't hear "My Prerogative" and not think of one of the songs from Sonic 2 - maybe the Casino zone or the cave one? A lot of "Thriller" and "True Blue" have this effect on me as well.

Did you knowing that "Theme from Spring Hill Zone" from Sonic the First was Numbering One in ESTONIA? It is true!

"We Major" & "Celebration" by Kanye West sound ridiculously liek Sonic the Hedgehog ta me. it's all I can really think of when they're playing. the music is so shiny/swooshy orchestral style.

"My Humps" may as well be the last boss music from Sonic 1. It's near identical!

That's the first level theme from the first Turrican game being covered there... the best music of all the Turrican games has to be the music on Turrican II for the Amiga, which was some of Chris Huelsbeck's best-ever, in my opinion!

Ah, that's great to hear! Is he still doing chip-tunes? I know he's put out a couple of CD's, but I don't know if it's of his computer music, or non-computer music, or what... will have to investigate further!

For whatever reason, 808 State usually makes me think of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Savaged Regime - Angel Island: Past, Present & Future EP

https://savagedregime.bandcamp.com/releases

It's just four different takes on the Angel Island music from Sonic 3, but they're transformative enough that this might as well be an original EP. The Good Future version is astounding, they pretty much turned the song into Pacific State by 808 State.

The boss music on SOnic 2 for the Game Gear is identical to 'Cubik' by 808 State
'Together Again' by Janet Jackson is very similar to a Sonic tune
