I think it's Trevor Jackson. The Underdog, remember?

i thought from day one it was ewan pearson but i'm not quite so sure now. whatever, it is deffo, deffo, deffo NOT dave clarke!

it's funny, i don't pparticularly like rex the dog i thought 'prototype' was awful) but it has been bugging me too for ages to know who it actually is.

Daniel Miller

(he did do that Kreisel 99 7" with Fehlmann)

No, it's Moby!

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:15 (nineteen years ago) link

a) same management
b) Mute connection

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:19 (nineteen years ago) link

It's 'Roadblock' all over again - Pete Waterman proving he's cooler than all of you.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:20 (nineteen years ago) link

REX THE DOG sounds like a Moby alias too
and it'd make sense since nobody listens to Moby or even take him seriously anymore

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:25 (nineteen years ago) link

c) has remixed The Prodigy before
d) has a history of making up aliases

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:25 (nineteen years ago) link

What do I win?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:26 (nineteen years ago) link

The Moby back catalog!!

lucky you

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Trevor Jackson is the best suggestion so far.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:29 (nineteen years ago) link

The press blurbs say Rex is from London. Factor in multiple Mute connections. It all points to Miller.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

...and his record bag the past three years has been roughly 25% Kompakt and Kompakt-related.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i think the Moby thing is closest, if not the answer
people who shroud an alias in mystery like this usually have something (cred) to lose if their real identity gets out
i mean seriously, what self respecting DJ would play a new moby 12" ?

the rest of these don't have much to hide
maybe fatboy, but he's kinda paved his way back into "cool" lately

who else has crossed over into mainstream pop to the detriment of his underground credentials?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Rex The Dog turning out to be Moby would make this all so hilariously worth it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't think trevor jackson would go near the rex the dog cover artwork

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Röyksopp is also with DEF Management, and they're Scandinavian like The Knife. Possibly based in London as well.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

it's not miller, it's......martin gore!

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i haven't heard rex the dog.

mark bell?

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Richard D. James!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I know we've got this rumour about the London thing but is it too obvious to suggest that Rex The Dog might be Felix Da Housecat?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Bono!

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

they said he was English, ruling out Moby, Felix, Ewan...not that any sane person would consider it to be any of them for even a second (ok, except Ewan)

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Is there not any logic in my reasoning?

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

yes! but i don't know who he is for shame...big name enough?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

deffo not felix or trevor jackson.

daniel miller is a possibility, esp. with all the synthage involved on the rex the dog stuff but it would make me a little sad if it was.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Madonna - she's English now, right?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Daniel Miller = Mute

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

now i remember , it does seem that rightly or wrongly , radio one said Rex the Dog = JX

Marc Read, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, he's also behind The Normal - you surely know Warm Leatherette and TVOD, right?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost, obviously

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

oh THAT Daniel Miller ;)

that would be ridiculous tho - you're boss of world's biggest indie label (prior to Jive), then you decide to start producing again and release on Kompakt?!

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

It's pretty certain that whoever it is, is with DEF Management in London. If it's not Moby or someone from Röyksopp that leaves, as far as I'm aware, Sonique. I stil think it's Moby though.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

so you don't believe they're from London?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm guessing it's a big beat-related name. An ex-Surreal Madrid guy or something like that.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Admittedly I doubt Miller would use artwork like that.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

that would be ridiculous tho - you're boss of world's biggest indie label (prior to Jive), then you decide to start producing again and release on Kompakt?!

that's exactly the kind of thing i'd expect mr. miller to do.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

and to be fair, i don't think he's ever stopped producing. i think he just doesn't release much of his own work anymore

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

And, as I said above, he and Fehlmann did one of the Kreisel 99s.

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

It's Craig Richards I hear

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:19 (nineteen years ago) link

the new tracks would seem to indicate "ran out of ideas"

lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 08:50 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, surely he only had 1 idea in the first place. and it was a good idea! just not a whole-album idea.

jabba hands, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 08:53 (fifteen years ago) link

it took years for Alan Braxe & Fred Falke to release an album too and when they did it didn't even have a bunch of new tracks on it.

blueski, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 10:20 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, surely he only had 1 idea in the first place. and it was a good idea! just not a whole-album idea.

it was a two-fold idea: I was disappointed when he said "album," cos I thought "no! go on releasing enormous squelchy analogue bangers b/w beautiful sad upbeat dance songs about death FOREVER"

greatest hits approach is a perfectly sensible way to go (and Italian Skyline always sounded like an album track), he just should have held back the two remixes for a remix comp in the future

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link

He's always worked at a pace of one single a year hasn't he*? an album three or two years ago might just have had lame half-arsed filler, whereas this might have good filler.

*nb check the video for Close To My Heart - at one point he's in a prison/mental hospital cell watching some of his own animations on telly, proto-Rex!

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 04:49 (fifteen years ago) link

8 minute album megamix available to mailing list subscribers and the radio megamix is online again.
given that i have come late to this party, the album has jumped straight to the top of my looking forward to list.

one month passes...

All of a sudden in the record racks I see a Rex the Dog album.

Surprised that no one here has been all over it but simultaneously not surprised.

Is it any good then?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 22 September 2008 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

there is little new on it, and what's old is cut down radio edits, so not much chat about it.

ace all the same

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 22 September 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I might get it then on a "nice to have it all in one place" basis.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 22 September 2008 14:29 (fifteen years ago) link

^^

That's its purpose for sure, although I do like the new tracks.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 September 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

nah it's just pointless and feels 4 years overdue. the radio edits all feel as though they end too soon, and the best of the new tracks (all, like, three of them?) is 'adequate'. get the full-length originals off beatport or somewhere, though i guess anyone familiar with rex the dog in the first place would already have them.

lex pretend, Monday, 22 September 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I like how he's kept up the anonymous thing. I expect a k-punk coverstory in The Wire on how radical and subversive RtD and Burial are.

byebyepride, Monday, 22 September 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link

b-but, didn't Burial out himself?

I know, right?, Monday, 22 September 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

His remix of Triangle Walls by Fever Ray is probably the best thing he's done since his 2004 heyday. He still only has one trick but that trick feels... relevant again?

Recently tracked down the 12" mixes of the older tracks... they are SO much better. Not that the album isn't a good listen and introduction to the music, but I'm probably never going to listen to it again.
