not really guncentric but everyone's been saying "yeah, cham's going gutter again, unlike all those other car-obsessed mixtape cats"-- it's more like something that just fans are saying to sort of legitimize him when talking him up to non-fans, to separate him from the stuff people might have heard from houston. but i think he is more likely to throw in a gun (nigga, it don't matter the gun / the bullets relax ya scalp like vidal sassoon) or drug (bricks moving quietly like the lips of milli vanilli) line.

i think he's so creative because his material's so limited. how many ways are there to describe candy paint!

i wasn't born with a twenty inch rim under my stroller
i had to grind cause chamillion's a muthafuckin soldier
ask anybody who the coldest up in the south is:
it's koopa, you already know. why would you doubt this?
are you serious? unzip my pants and pull it out quick
and watch the master pee in yo face because i'm bout this

kickers sounding like my trunk just swallowed a soccer team
the candy berry drop sitting outside the marriott
is what got your miss very hot, trying to give me the hairy spot
my album ain't barely drop, i don't live on a fairy block
a scary block, where niggas get buried and carry glocks
niggas be frontin like they brave cause scary niggas get shot
bullets be in the glock talkin bout 'eh, let me out'
hold up, if you can prove i ain't the throwdest on the street
then stand up right now, go ahead and speak your piece
anybody? ....... okay, unanimous vote......
we all agree that every time he touch the mic, it get broke
choke the cord until it smoke-- and don't get twin pissed
he put the heat up to your lips and you'll wish that he miss
i hope that you get my drift while i split the swish
lookin like a poisonous lightbulb bit my wrist
i'm showin so much green, i'm blowin so picture me
as a iced out, ghetto statue of liberty
chamillion don't spit for free, that nigga turned down a g
i sent him the deposit, he sent it right back to me
for the record, chamillion wreck it
i wreck it, so don't eject it
i got this rap game perfected

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago) link

That's why I said that, yeah. I go to college in Hampton, Virginia and I was born and raised in Edmonton.

And what is that song you just put the lyrics of?

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

cham/paul wall - oochie wally freestyle.

why do you go to school so far away from where you live?

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago) link

Well, my family has a weird tradition of making the kids go to a US black university for some reason and being that I'm not paying for it, I pretty much went where they told me. My sister went here too, so I was just following the line, right? Plus it's more of an adventure going somewhere that you aren't really familiar with. But I'm going home this summer and every summer and shit, it won't be so bad.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

it doesn't sound bad at all. you get to go to the united states! and a centrally located place in the united states. how is that not good? i'm from western canada, too, rollie. but not even a big city.

are you going to write about chamillionaire for pitchfork?

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

naw, but I will download the shit out of it. If (when) he get signed or puts out a new record even, I'll do a single, prolly.

centrally located? it's like on the east coast, do you mean in the middle of east coast? Most people consider it southern, actually. where are you from in western canada?

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

it's sort of near all of the large cities on the east coast, nearer than if you lived in iowa or ohio. i never thought of it as part of the south. it's below the mason-dixon line, i guess. do you know any famous rappers?

i live in saskatchewan. do you know where that is?

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

Of course I do. I mean, I know my Canada, dude. It isn't as if I was just born there and then I've just been shipped around the states in a box of some kind. I've lived in E-Town for my entire life until like January. Where in Saskatchewan? Regina? Wait, you said small town.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago) link

There's towns smaller than Regina now?

minolta (minolta), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago) link

you don't have to be defensive all the time about being wealthy! just try to keep it on the low.

i've never been to edmonton, i don't think. it's very far north. it's the capital of alberta. i've never heard it called e-town. i'm from moose jaw, third largest city in the province.

William Wiggins, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

"city"

minolta (minolta), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

Rollie, you're from Edmonton? That city is getting drugged the fuck up (the kids I know from Edmonton hang out at Bankers and push meth and candy all day). Is it getting worse?

LC, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

Drugged up? Maybe by the Coliseum (because it's like the inner city) and surely there's mad drug action elsewhere in town, but I wouldn't say it rivals people shooting up in those shelters in Vancouver and the crazy people in T-Dot. It's definitely on the rise, because it's a burgeoning enterprise in the city, right?

Ahhhh, these people are likely from Millwoods. That place is like gangland territory.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

how yall know about h-town being from canada, rollie

jack frost, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

Music's universal. Plus I live in Virginia right now, so I hear a lot of screw and other Southern shit.

Mixtape Messiah is hot, but the prolonged dissing of Dyke (LOL) Jones is a bit much at times. I kinda feel sorry for him! Cham really goes at him with the snitch stuff and how he dissed Magno though, using some 3-way phone call he had with some bitch and some other guy where he drops the other guy in it with this bitch, it's kind of really nasty relentless school bully type dissing.

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

It's really annoying that CD02 is only slowed down and not chopped up!

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Hhaha i just noticed he disses Dizzee Rascal!!!

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a shame that so few people are going to read this thread, really.

Yeah i was going to post it to the Showtime thread but it seemed off-topic amongst all the promo-waving.

So has Dyke Jones answered Cham yet? And how tight is Magno with him?

scg, Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Man i just read that other thread and if what that Mike dude says is true ("Man Chamillionaire and Dizzee got along well. Chamillionaire really respects Dizzee's stuff and Dizzee really respects the south.")then isn't that tantamount to being a bitch??? Acting all nice in his face then dissing him behind his back, that's what a fake nigga does innit??? Dizzee and Dyke Jones should link and make a diss record.

scg, Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

dude it's totally not a diss, it's just a punchline. he'll be dizzy because cham slapped him! speak my name i make em dash like dame!

mike jones responded on his messageboard!! but he just said he's really rich and cham is a liar.

"Ridin' Dirty" would be my favorite fucking song if KDAY and Power 106 didn't play it six times an hour. Krayzie Bone's verse is great.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 29 June 2006 01:34 (seventeen years ago) link

it sort of blows my mind cause i never thought when i wrote that two years ago that he was ever going to blow up like he did. now i'm about to see him at some arena a couple hours from my house. i'd love to nerd out and get him to sign my color changing click mixtapes and give dap to rasaq and ask what lew hawk is REALLY LIKE.

i like mixtape messiah 3. apart from when he sings. was surprised to hear his little rant about how he doesnt really like or get inspired by music that much anymore though over the common beat... esp as just last time, he was saying how hip hop isnt dead etc.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 31 August 2007 11:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's some awesome footage from the gig he did at the Hove festival here in Norway a few months ago. Yup. He's playing next to a barn.

Norway is apparently all the way gangsta. Good to know.

Was there really not a thread on "Ridin'" specifically? All I can find is it showing up in year-end countdowns.

Amazing song though. Got kind of killed by repeated plays but I remember hearing it for the first time, on the road from Atlanta to Athens after this big outdoor Flaming Lips/De La Soul show (the one that inspired this thread)...it came over the radio and we weren't really paying attention and gradually we were, and our conversation fell silent and we were kind of looking at each other like, holy shit, is that as good as I think it is? Always though the racial-profiling theme hit a little harder than you'd expect for a giant chart hit, and it gave the thing a good edge, on top of an obviously amazing hook and some solid rapping throughout. Also I love the really wobbly, weird intro, it's like the quiet windup for a sucker punch.

Then I spent a weekend dicking around with emily.s, watching the like twenty music channels on some jacked-up cable she'd inherited from a departed roommate, and the video was on constantly and gradually, any and everything we saw or heard was converted to the rhythm of the song. I can't really separate the track now from this spree of inspired in-jokes but that's not really Chamillionaire's fault.
