anybody got a timed tracklist?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

Disclaimer: Don't know if you already knew.

Here's a tracklist minus times but plus samples: http://www.fabriclondon.com/label.artist.album.fabric.php?artist=michaelmayer&release=fab13/mic

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:18 (twenty years ago) link

i've never heard mayer play out but i love his attitude to the whole dj'ing / producing / club thing. a rare gem in a sea of shit.

stirmonster, Monday, 10 November 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

Not sure if it's what you mean but I thought his little message on the sleeve for the Fabric thing was really really cool. something like "love to all the freaks, ravers and djs lost in music, there's worse places to be caught".

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

Can I add to the luv, please? Fantastic collection / mix.

How does it compare to Immer? (which I've only ever seen once in a shop, and foolishly passed up)

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:55 (twenty years ago) link

thanks spencer! (and it turns out my guesses at the timings were correct to the second!)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

it's much more songful than immer, and more goth if that's even possible.

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

the gothness is so delicate, almost brittle, less layered and overwhelming/bearing, which is terrific. love how he manages to have 13 quite different-sounding cuts (again!) and weave them into one singular thing.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

This is close to my fave mix of the year after only a few listens. Alongside How To Kill The DJ (which really has to be heard to be believed) and Lu Cont's Fabric mix.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

How To Kill The DJ

Who is that by, Ronan?

there's a special on the fabric series at RG but it'll be over by the time this gets shipped to the antipodes, bah (& there's no copies of the lu cont mix).

ps : thanx for the how to kill the dj tip, ronan! ferenc!

hector (hector), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 00:54 (twenty years ago) link

cool stirmonster, I was wondering about who'd do the part two tonight so I look forward to hearing that.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:28 (twenty years ago) link

Blimey, this is very, very good. It took me a while to "get" Immer, now filed under "good albums to work to", but this one's immediately enjoyable, proper songs and a good bit of dadhouse in there.

Did anyone get the Bugz in the Attic Fabriclive mix? Anything described as "nu-jazz" shouldn't normally be touched even with a big stick held by your mum but I'd subscribed and, blimey again, it's another unexpected treat. I'm not sure but I think it's because they don't wear hats. Hats have always been the downfall of jazz meddlers. Hats and unnecessary facial hair.

Mike (mratford), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck this guy is hard to keep up with. Every time I load ILM it's "Have you heard the new Michael Mayer mix?"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

onl;y thing i have of his is the neuhouse mix he did...is it similar?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

This is a great mix, but its pretty standard - i cant understand all this Love.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

"pretty standard" is pretty much the opposite of what i'd call this (i'd call it unusually pretty)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

It's standard in that it comes on a five-inch disc with a little hole in the middle. I suppose it's also standard in that a bunch of tracks are put back-to-back with overlapping bits. You can dance to these tracks or just listen to them (if you try hard enough to prevent yourself from moving around). That also makes it standard.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

The Neuhouse mix is quite good -- though, in some sense, Mayer didn't have as much to work with then. From my understanding, the output from the community Mayer's in the middle of has become increasingly geared towards his strengths (i.e. more dynamic, more pop-oriented).

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

i have become uncontrollably addicted to the Wighnomy Brothers & Robag Wruhme "Killerteppich" track. it's like when you get all mesmerized by a radiator or strobe light or something. also loving the magnet/superpitcher transition. is the consensus that speicher is the lessest of the mixes (havent heard it yet)? why is that?

scissors (Honda), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

yes, that is the consensus. my theories as to why:

1) it's the least "pop", and so of least interest in the critical sense. this ties into my pet conspiracy theory that kompakt gets lots of attention because there's lots to write about. i don't think speicher courts our intellectual kicks as much as other kompakt releases. to use an analogy from the language of, um, fashion magazines it's certainly the least directional collection. ("pop" is probably the wrong word to use up there, but "diverse" doesn't quite nail it either)

2) aside from "love is stronger than pride", "fieber" and "regensburg", most of the tracks go nowhere - although i have heard love from various sources for "supertiel" (nope don't get it), "irre" and "musick".

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

"Vision 03" and "Unter Null" are great too!

But I think Vahid is mainly right - a lot of those Reinhard Voight-style bangers don't seem to have much purpose except banging, so they're harder to latch onto or become emotionally involved with.

Has anyone else heard Wighnomy Bros' "Bodyrock"? Luvvit luvvit luvvit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 November 2003 05:19 (twenty years ago) link

the pop aspect of Kompakt is so insidious. Coming from an almost purposely anti pop viewpoint, the dance aspect interested me at first but its the hooks that keep me coming back.

Coversely, and quite wonderfully, my wife, who is an avowed Kylie fan, and who rarely listens to any kind of music, especially dancefloor/electronic music, thinks this is excellent. Check that universal appeal!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

I thought your wife was some sorta Punk Planet indie person.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

Well, whatever made you think that? Cos she's from Chicago?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

No, because you said something once about her making fun of you because you didn't know what Punk Planet was!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

I think you have me confused with someone else, Ned. Avril Lavigne, perhaps?

haven't heard the mix yet (i mentioned upthread that a record shop in dublin was supposed to have it for a tenner, but then when i went in they didn't have it) but i'm listening to the track bring me closer by richard davis which is appearently on it, (its on the free cd with jockey slut this month, and yes i know everyone hates jockey slut and its the dance nme and all but i quite like it and am a sucker for half decent magazines)and its really really good
the strings are excellent

robin (robin), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

the rest of the (jockey slut) cd is awful though
who the fuck are all these people?(john cale aside)
usually theres a few good tracks on their free cds

robin (robin), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

I'm listening to it now and I really like it. Also, on the Fabric website it says Mayer's favorite band is Alan Parsons Project. Also, I concur re: Richard Davis and excellent strings

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

After getting it on Friday and having the weekend to think of it there are quite a few qreat tunes:

the Heiko Voss is insidious
Villalobos - Easy Lee is just cool
my wife loves the Superpitcher track the best
&
Le Dust Sucker has something to it that just works right where it is in the mix

the whole thing does have kinda of a goth/industrial/pop/house sheen to it which is just kinda like magic

hector (hector), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

where's the love for the m83 track

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:37 (twenty years ago) link

c'mon i just got it 2 days ago, i didn't want to gush

hector (hector), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

The M83 thing is brilliant, do you know anything else about them, Ronan? I downloaded the original and it's not as good :(

yes it is!!

immer 2 took a few second chances with me, but it is now my favorite of the three (the other two are still tip top obv.). it is really good late at night on headphones.

This is probably my favourite mix album ever.

Is his Mantasy album any good? (Or is there conversation about it elsewhere?)

djh, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

Mantasy isn't very exciting but I like it just fine.

Recommend his RA podcast from the end of last year, like it better than the album, up there with his older mixes.

Plasmon, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

Read a description of it as "middle aged" which actually made it appeal.

djh, Thursday, 21 March 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago) link

Mantasy is a nice sort of Sundayish album to sit and read to but it's not really house music, until you get to the final third at least. It's beautifully produced and there's some lovely stuff on it though.

Cosign the recommendation for the RA podcast though, that's essential.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

Ta. Any recommendations on tracks to here from Mantasy? The couple I've played have been a bit ... nothing, really.

Will hunt down the podcast.

That John Peel set is probably the pinnacle of all schaffel for me - the double victory lap of "Unter Null" followed by the T.Raumschmiere remix of "Ich Weiss Warum" is astonishing.

Tim F, Monday, 25 March 2013 12:23 (eleven years ago) link

Whoops, I suck at formatting. ilx encoded the ? as %3F on the second link and picked up a quotation mark on the first.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ydgy868f9f9cy81

Yes, this is def *the* schaffel mix. I've heard Superpitcher's rmx of Quark's I Walk on at least 2 diff commercial mixes (Optimo & Ivan Smagghe's) but neither are as sleek and sexy as it is on there for me.

rawr, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

Tim, what's the name of the track I quoted the other day with the really squelchy voccoder? I think it comes right before Unter Null.
