There are loads of aesthetically pleasing banners. The ones I really hate are Italy and Ireland though, because they are basically the same fucking flag, did they just copy each other? It's like a high school exam and one of them is the smart kid and the other is the bully forcing the smart kid to share answers, but a dyslexic bully who writes it a bit wrong. Plus I am part Irish and part Italian with no geneological pride.

I like the German city flags.

Ally, they're not that similar - green/white/gold v. green/white/red. Antarctica is my favourite. Big white splodge... what can it mean?

Wow! Greenland has got the COOLEST flag in the world.

That site's pretty cool actually because it's useful for questions like this.

Search: GREENLAND, Bahrain, Botswana, Canada, China, Georgia, East Timor, Latvia, Macedonia, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Somalia, St Lucia, Vietnam, Wales

Destroy: Bulgaria, Central African Republic, Comoros, Dominican Republic, Isle Of Man, Kiribati, Libya, Macao, Palau

The Australian Aboriginal flag rocks my world.

At school, pre-1995, we were taught that the yellow was for the sun, the red for the land and the black for the dreamtime.

I hate the new interpretation that the black is for the aboriginal people. They are brown or white or somewhere in-between, not black. Crikey!

toraneko, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am very ambivalent about the Zimbabwean flag because I love the soapstone bird (they are gorgeous in real life) but I don't like the colours.

Sam, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Australian Aboriginal flag is great. Whatever it represents, it's cool to see that much black in a flag. Why not more black-based flags?

fritz, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No Italys is red and Irelands has orange.

The principle in Irelands being Green for Ireland, Orange for Northern Ireland and White for peace between the two.

Yeah ok so its a shit flag, but come on we're hardly setting the world on fire anyway.

Canadas flag was focus grouped but at least we got the fucking colonial jack off it .
Brazil is perhaps my favorite

anthony, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Weren't the red squares on either side of the maple leaf originally to be blue, to represent the oceans? That would've been really ugly.

fritz, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thanks Fritz. I like Greenland's flag a lot.Chequered flags are great too but only because they remind me of The Specials.

Mauritania's flag looks like an emoticon when seen from afar. It must have confused pirates to see a Mauritanian boat with that flag.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey, if you snap Palmer Land (the peninsula bit) off Antarctica it looks like Fozzie Bear, side-on, without his hat. A bit.

Madchen, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All plain tri-colors in the French, Italian or Irish style are automatic duds.

When in doubt, just use a big old star - worked like a charm for Viet Nam, Somalia or the Congo.

fritz, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dark orange and regular red are practically the same color!

Trevor, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm not even patriotic at all, but they're fucking flags, I don't care about it for either patriotic or aesthetic reasons. But having said that I don't think its much better or worse than all the other bloody flags in the world.

Ronan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You should have seen what Pearson wanted for our flag, blue instead of red borders and three maple leafs instead of two, it was ugly. I like New Brunswick's with the crazy boat.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Notice we've avoided any discussion of flags with loaded connotations (except Old Glory) - nobody has mentioned the Swastika, Confederate flag or even the Israeli flag... are some symbols too potent to be discussed aesthetically?

fritz, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like the one Bono was waving in that rebel song...what was it called? Oh, yes: "Sunday, Bloody Sunday."

My real fave is the Japanese flag (just white with red circle). Very elegant.

Mark, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i saw an old black guy wearing a confederate flag shirt yesterday. i think the red nazi flag with black-and-white swastika circle in the middle is gorgeous.

Just flicking through my atlas...

Bhutan...has a cool looking dragon on it, orange and yellow triangles in the background
Grenada...intracate design, stars, some sort of plant, red, yellow and green
Kiribati...has a sea motif (blue and white squigly lines), a rising sun and a bird flying (both yellow) on a red background. Lovely.
Sri Lanka...lion with sword...maroon, yellow, green and orange.
Uruguay...smiley sun (yellow), blue and white lines.

james, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Nazi flag is great, as was all their style achievements, I mean they had style consultants for fuck's sake. But if you say something like that people look at you weird. I don't know what the Israeli flag looks like.

If the image works, that's Washington D.C! Pretty wild.

THe Tennessee sate flag has three stars, one for each of the "Grand Divisions" (east, west, central). Tennessee used to be thort of almost as three different states: Memphis was capital of the West, Nashville the central, and Knoxville (vying with Chattanooga) the east. Of course whatever distinctions were once felt have been erased by franchising and the highway system.

D: The Canadian flag is too new looking, like a focus-group-approved corporate logo. It is bland and reeks of consensus which, while surprisingly good qualities in a nation, make for a dull flag.

This makes me really happy, because it's so true! I like how '60s it looks, though, esp. the legacy it's left on our gov't depts.

Bosnia & Herzogovina is all over the place! Looks like the trim from some hotel pamphlet.

I believe it was more or less foisted upon the ex-warring factions of Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats by the UN High Representative or something, as a compromise (ie a design no-one could possibly like or feel represented them?).

I love the Albanian flag!

http://www.33ff.com/flags/XL_flags/Albania_flag.gif

Canada's is super classic, too. There was a confusing joke about it in "Working," that short-lived sitcom starring an adult Fred Savage. Fred's boss says he wants to move to Canada because of their flag. Fred replies, "That's a maple leaf, sir." The boss was dismayed. What did he think it was supposed to be? It's obv. not a pot leaf.

New Mexico has a nice flag. It's vertically and horizontally symmetrical:

http://www.flags2000.com.au/images/us32_large.gif

Idaho's flag is the only flag out of 50 designed by a woman. You bet they try to paint Idaho as some feminist paradise because of it. (It actually isn't, don't tell anyone!) Also, it is one fugly flag.
