Note to Tracer: Similar feelings about sticky armpits have caused me to become addicted to anti-perspirants.

spock - yet I am unbothered because I am protected by my own impermeable force-field of earthy sweat. Fight fire with fire!

I have heard that people in Germany hold body odor in much higher regard (aphrodisically speaking) than us scrub-crazy Americans. I don't think UKers feel the same way, but it sure seems like it ;)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I almost bought some Dirt - I'd been putting it off, and when I went back to the store to buy it, I felt it was a little sweet for my taste. The tangerine one was nice. I'm sticking with Song de Chine (a green tea fragrance), and after my bottle is empty, I'm going for a citrus. I like to mix the green tea with the citrus or a rose scent. I hate spicy or excessive floral scents. I also like Rain oil, but that's a little played out now, I guess.

Kerry, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Demeter annoys me - I mean, why would you want to smell like Dirt? Or Gin & Tonic? Or Tomatoes??? I don't get it. Their sweet ones are nice for trying to be all innocent every once and a while, like there's one that smells all carmelly, I forget what it is called but it's nice enough.

I like Smell This for cheap stupid novelty scent. Beach Smells = great.

Used to have Eau D'Issey Miyake. Now I use what my granny gives me. Can't remember what it is though. Oh yeah occasionally use Anais Anais.

A bottle of Tommy I stole from my brother. Or a CK1 one rip off from Target. Both I've recently grown tired of, and am looking for a switch. Most men's cologne's are really gross, too musky. I tend to go for the perfumey types.

The odd thing is when you are standing in an elevator or such, and you notice some stranger smells like an ex-girlfriend.

bnw, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bought bottle of semi-expensive YSL Kouros in duty free shop two or more years ago when loaded (in all senses). Still a few splashes left. What happened to the great smell of Brut?

Andrew L, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My problem is that I wear things that are way too expensive. I was sitting there in that stupid movie this weekend smelling my wrist, going, hey, this isn't strong enough for costing $90. I have to go find something strong enough to be worth that cash, although apparently it's stronger than I thought.

Ally, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wear a number of perfumes/colognes but my favourites are: Eternity, 5th Avenue and 2 I can't find anymore... :( Somewhere and Wishing( Avon) Gale

If my nose comes within ten feet of Tommy, I feel like vomiting. Sensory trigger reaction from 2nd college roommate (for more information, see 'Strange Wiggling').

Nothing...I usually don't like perfume. I like flowery scents, though. The real reason is that I am too cheap to spend money on accessories, be it perfume or hair ties or makeup. $10 for perfume when I could get a book? Really, people. Deodorant and shampoo.

Lyra, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Old Spice. Grown up man's smell.

Sort of masculine but in a femme kind of way. citrus, greenry and a touch of floral

I don't go for aftershave, I just have nice-smelling deodorant, currently Lynk Gravity (I think).

sorry, LYNX.

I have a zinc deficiency and that urban legend lactose intolerance, which means I've had almost no sense of smell my whole life, and for that reason any smells which I can perceive are pretty disagreeable to me, especially artificial odors. Manure smells better to me than perfume / cologne.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Has cologne become "in" again, or am I just now noticing more guys wearing cologne than before?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I *hate* the smell of perfume and am incredibly glad Isabel doesn't wear it (she's allergic - I think she'd quite like to wear it). It all just smells so ghastly and inhuman - ugh. Being on a tube with someone with strong perfume on is the absolute worst form of public transport sense pollution I know, bar someone actually taking a shit on the tube floor.

Tom, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Also, surely perfume was invented and became fashionable when it was really really difficult for people to take regular baths. It is now in the 1st world at least not difficult for people to take regular baths i.e. perfume is now completely unneccessary and using it is the equivalent of still using a horse and bloody cart.

Tom, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tom you have reminded me of the hilarious joke Q. Why do girls wear makeup and perfume A. Because they are ugly and they smell.

I don't wear it on a daily basis but sometimes if I'm going out. Then it's Eau D'Issey or Dune. I used to wear Spellbound and lots of men would comment favourably on it. Why did I stop?

Emma, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't wear any, just deodorant.

Ally C - Lynx Africa does not count as deodorant as it has no anti-perspirant qualities. It's a body spray = perfume = you are a girl.

I like perfume (and girls) so that's not meant as an insult. I'm wearing Farenheit today, which is nice but doesn't seem to last very well. Sometimes I wear Cool Water and sometimes I sip into my CK selection pack.

Nick, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

um, ckone

gareth, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I theoretically agree with Tom as reasonably clean humans usually smell great and covering it up seems daft. However, some musky perfumes (I'd recognise them, but I don't know their names) do send me into a deep lustful swoon.

I do use an antiperspirant myself but that's because I'm a sweaty bastard.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Emma, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

At the moment Héritage by Guerlain or on sunny days Allure by Chanel. After I finish those I'm going to change again, I'm thinking Vetiver by Guerlain and that Helmut Lang eau de toillete if I can ever find a bottle in this godforsaken city.

In general I trust Guerlain and Chanel.

Today it's Hugo Boss, but I've also got Bvlgari (a bit lemony, not too sure about it), contradiction, xs and boss elements aqua. I love the smell of perfume and aftershave, mind you I do get some funny looks when I ask people what that lovely aftershave they're wearing is. But nothing floral, destroy:anais anais, the smell of creeping death and funerals.

cabbage, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

perfume and cologne are both disgusting. they make me gag. they all smell so damn artificial and in many cases like solvents and some people SERIOUSLY overdo it. a clean-person-smell is so much nicer and is actually pretty damn attractive.

lady die, Thursday, 23 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The trick with perfume is to only apply enough so you can smell it when you get close. Unfortunately, this is difficult to achieve as most perfumes either fade quickly or smell very strong for the first couple of hours.

I am currently rotating between Fendi, Trussardi Light, CK Truth, Green Tea, Happy, a freebee phial from Zara and a bottle of stuff from River Island I got for Christmas (work days only).

I wear Angel now. Everyone likes it, but vaguely irritatingly, Ramon prefers Skin Musk, which I used to wear, which costs $8 in the kiddie perfume section of Duane Reade. Why am I spending any money at all? I'm a big moron.

Ally, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think Angel has chocolate in it. I wear Comptoir Sud Pacifique's Motu, but it's a summery fragrance and the bottle's almost empty so I'm looking for something else next. They have a new one, Coeur de Raisin. I tried it, it's grape, lilly and jasmine, about $50 for a small bottle, I guess that's a moderate price. The Jo Malone Honeysuckle + Jasmine I bought only attracted bees, it's still more than half full.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think my favourite is H2O+'s Green Tea but I don't have it - somehow got Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea instead which smells pretty darned good too and is especially nice if you use just a tiny bit but of the actual cologne but beforehand you shower with the gel and use their moisturizer and also if you use a green tea scented shampoo and conditioner - leaves just a very subtle scent but then you've got it *everywhere*. I don't have a signature scent though as I have about ten different ones on the go at any given time. I love cool oceany or airy smelling ones for everyday. Still, sometimes nothing beats something as basic as a fresh shampoo and a bit of baby powder.

On the boy I'm 'liking' this new one that's oh so obliquely called Sexual. It's like, ok YOU, bedroom NOW!

Kim, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kiehl's. Cucumber. Body. Wash.

better shower regularly tho, or you'll turn into a pickle!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Comptor has some nice stuff if you just want really subtle. Except for that goddamned Vanille line they have, which smells like you've just rolled around for 8 hours in cookie dough and then gone out, and is disgusting.

Ally, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What an excellent question. I'm still mourning discontinuation of Donna Karan's Chaos - although I saw a bottle for $150 in a rare perfume shop I didn't bite. I'm trying to find a replacement because it's spicy and musky and everyone else likes it on me too. I'm one of these people who cannot bear to have the same perfume as any friends. but as I used to wear the Issey Miyake one, Diorissimo, Joseph and the men's Escape I'm not normally a musk person. If you like real ho's bedroom stuff go for Chaumade by Guerlain.

Suitable replacements for the Chaos are either the Comme des Garcons red or Corso Como 1010 and I will get one of these on my next trip to Liberty, or when a fashion friend goes through Milanese duty free. Whichever comes first.

You know what's good? Thierry Mugler's new mens cologne. If I could afford to buy such things right now I'd get it, it smells delish.

perfumes are dud. I like to smell people. If there's any non-natural scent to them let it be a lingering of their soap/shampoo that can only be smelled when you get really close.

Samantha, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, I hate to wear the same fragrances as my friends too, which is why I hate telling anyone offline what perfume I'm wearing. I used to buy the most expensive one possible when I was in high school and college cos I knew if I told people which one it was, they wouldn't be able to afford it anyhow so it wouldn't matter. I know, I know perfumes smell different on different people thanks to body chemical makeup but still - if you've ever walked into a room reeking of COol Water or Tommy Girl because 10 girls are all wearing it, you know what I mean. My entire workplace seems to wear Cool Water or Bulgari, it's bullshit. Angel is common enough for me, quite frankly, that's as common as I'll go, and I go out of my way to mix things when I'm wearing a common one to make sure it doesn't smell like regular (hint: lotions from Bath and Body Works are good for doing this).

Ramon wears Pi, that smells pretty good. Nicole, what does the new Mugler one smell like? Is it that Angel Men one?

Ally, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wear Bvlgari, and I don't know anyone else who wears it. Is it far more popular over there?

chris, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It might just be a workplace thing, ie the girls here all latch onto each other, "Ooh, you're wearing that? Where'd you get it?" (next day) "Are you wearing that perfume?" "Yeah!" "Fantastic!" Argh. They do that with shoes too.

Ally, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'll stress nopw that I'm referring to Bvlgari for boys, I am not a perfumed ponce.

It is nice though, very fresh

Right now I'm after a bottle of Ralph Lauren Glamorous (I know, everyone has that now, but I was wearing stuff that smelled absolutely identical for years, and I don't know where to find more cuz the store that sold it closed), and Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll. I just like that they're so flowery and warm, and sweet in a subtle way, not overbearingly like Vanilla Fields or Angel. Actually, Angle Innocence isn't bad. I also like Lancome Miracle.

For guys, I like Christian Dior Higher (airy, floral) or Farenheit (to me, it smells like SEX!, it's just raw appeal), or Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio (light, transparent, oceanic). I don't like old-man- smelling stuff, and I don't want my guy to smell like a girl, either.

I prefer no scent on people too - I don't even like the smell of shampoo/soap/washing-powder-on-clothes/deodorant. Having said that, some perfumes etc. are really beautiful smelling.

I have a tendency towards puritanism and so for many years I was as fragrance free as I possibly could be. I am a bit more relaxed about things nowadays so I do sometimes wear some perfume or something.

toraneko, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

LYNX is one of those scents which reminds me of powder gay night here in Dunedin, and KC's too. My friend Steve thinks that the constant conjunction of LYNX and these places, mingled with the memory of one night stands has given him associations such that he gets horny every time he smells it.

Someone I knew wore vanilla essence, but stopped after a strange man approached her and said that she smelt good enough to eat.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ally: No, it's not Angel for Men, I think it's just called Mugler Cologne. It's mostly bergamot and citrus, with a nice "clean" scent to it that I can't quite identify.

Just plain soap and water works fine for some people, but I have noticed that there are some people who just smell off like sour dough even if they bathe and/or shower regularly. Which is why the "no scent" option is sometimes dud.

Nicole, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

People who smell like sour dough?!?!?!?!?!

I like Marc Jacob's new cologne. Except I don't like that it's advertised by pictures of Sofia Coppola.

Ally, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

So do I. But yeah, Sofia Coppola??? Forget Godfather 3, I hate her for doing that psuedo hipster crap television show High Octane a few years back.

People do have very distintive smells, whether they clean themselves a lot or not. I do remember another girl I knew who just smelled like a goat. It's not like she was dirty, it was her body chemistry.

p.s. i call my horse d'artagnan, although his government name is michael freeberg. we're both big michael york fans and did not take his passing well, and agree that the best bit of cinematic history was the "i'm basil exposition, from british intelligence" parts of austin powers. d'artagnan informs me that york is still with us, so i guess i rescind that comment. maybe i was thinking of someone else. probably connery.

brimstead, Sunday, 26 November 2023 20:08 (four months ago) link

My mom wore 4711 when I was growing up! I liked it but haven’t smelled it for ages so I can’t really describe it. Fresh and citrusy without smelling like any particular fruit. Unisex for sure. I wear Cartier EDC and it is somewhat similar iirc.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 26 November 2023 23:07 (four months ago) link

I have 4711, I spritz it liberally first thing, as an accompaniment to my coffee making. Eau de Cologne is meant to be a brief ride, not a long-lasting perfume. It smells of lemon and neroli, and there is a synthetic chemical in it I can’t identify but I once described to my bf as smelling “like a concave surface, like you’re smelling the shape of a red blood cell or a clean bathroom sink.”

As Eau de Colognes go, this is the best choice for daily usage as intended, that is, it’s good value for money. If you want this smell as a long-lasting perfume (why would you? but if you do) then try Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, which was specifically designed as “4711 as an Eau de Parfum” iirc. If you want a nicer but more expensive Eau de Cologne, there are (pricey) alternatives that I’ve smelled but cannot bring myself to splurge on; I saw a 200 mL vintage beehive bottle of my favourite Guerlain EDC Imperiale last week in a random shop, but at 280 Euro I passed.

I like Imperiale, and the non-vintage 100ml version is not expensive. Guerlain pretty much does everything right ime.

Anybody have an opinion on the defunct Minotaure by Paloma Picasso? I love it and cherish my one bottle of it but you have to get the original version which has more staying power and it evolves.

Josefa, Monday, 27 November 2023 02:15 (four months ago) link

Imperiale (and Eau de Guerlain, and “Coq”) are all so pricey for what that liquid is supposed to do! My fave of them all is Chanel’s Eau De Cologne, but it’s just impossible to imagine spending that much money on something I use like a freshener

I do agree that Guerlain is generally the best :)

A team-building Q: what’s your favourite note, at this point? The question was asked on Reddit and I had to think carefully.

For top notes I vote galbanum without second thought, it’s unfortunate to me that such a fierce opener is seen as “too astringent” or whatever for modern tastes

For heart note, I feel like it is cheating but it’s “birch tar”, as smelled in Cuir De Russie and Anubis. Eugenols (broadly) would be #1 except you don’t smell clove oil in contemporary fragrance

For base note I need to research what exact musk ingredient that my nose adores, but it is the musk I smell in vintage Equipage

so what do you like?

Looking through the notes in the fragrances I've especially enjoyed: citrus, yuzu, pink pepper, bergamot / white blossom, ylang ylang, oakmoss, sea salt / ambergris, white musk/'musk' (idk the difference?), cedar, vetiver. All pretty basic, I think. Not adept enough to refine any further.

For now, depending on weather/mood, I want things that smell like a pirate ship, or a stormy sea bashing against a pine-lined shore, or a breezy tropical or Mediterranean beach, or a jungle at night, or a campfire in a forest, or some combination of those. During deepest winter I thought about trying 'warmer' fragrances, but didn't find any I loved, though I also didn't try very hard.

Nanban kind of smells like this in my opinion? Actually going to put some on now. Got it for Christmas a couple of years back. It’s beautiful.

Twilly or Twilly Poivre for the notes you mentioned - Poivre has pink pepper in it.

I decided I really really really need to acquire Galop after finding a sample strip from a month ago in a handbag I haven’t used since then and it still smells incredible. It’s the rose-leather-musk combo for me, Clive, like a high end tackroom.

For pirate ship, it might be worth checking out Tonnerre by Beaufort, which has gunpowder, marine and brandy notes, inspired by the Battle of Trafalgar.

Cape Heartache by Imaginary Authors is one of the better pine-centred things I’ve come across (pine and wild strawberry, with a touch of smoke).

Zoologist have a bunch of jungle-themed scents, from approachable (Sloth) to very divisive (Bat). Debaser by DS&Durga has been my go-to tropical-ish one recently, though.

ShariVari, Sunday, 24 March 2024 22:50 (three weeks ago) link

Picked up an impossibly cheap bottle of 31 Rue Cambon at a benefit shop along the way and love it on slightly overcast days like today.

Bat by Zoologist is disgusting, don’t even try it out of curiosity. It smells exactly like it sounds, and it hangs around forever.

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Sunday, 24 March 2024 22:57 (three weeks ago) link

yes, I agree it is disgusting, but I think it's worth experiencing.

I think I like scents that don't last that long, which is one of the reasons I like Diptyque. I don't want to wake up in bed the next morning wondering if there is a stranger next to me

I love Oriza L. Legrand's Rêve d'Ossian (and the corresponding soap) and am theoretically on board with all of their scents, but they are very very strong. Their Relique d'Amour is interesting but also smells like a dank crypt, and their Chypre Mousse is lovely at first, but I can't help but eventually feel I'm being smothered under a pile of wet leaves

their Vetiver Royal Bourbon is astonishingly strong. If you want a scent that will last you all day and into the next, they are the brand for you

Dan S, Monday, 25 March 2024 01:14 (three weeks ago) link

I wanna love Zoologist bc they’re hometown but so far… zero winners have met my nose. I got a sample of the famous T Rex and I just hate it

I’m wearing Anubis all the time. Bf is getting into “contemporary scents” to match the tastes of his co-workers and brought home a sample of frankly lovely Ariana Grande thing? It’s ridiculous off the top (marshmallows?) but dries down as nicely as a Guerlain

A DS&D limited I caught and absolutely wish I’d bought a second bottle of is Rockaway Beach. Smells actually of beach in a very unsentimental way

I like a lot of Zoologist fragrances but Bee is the real standout. Smells exactly like Russian Orthodox churches filled with beeswax candles.

I've been meaning to try Cape Heartache and some of the Beauforts but forgot about them when I was in Bloom last week. I ended up with Albatros by Mendittorosa and Resonant by Oddity. Albatros seems to have a similar destination to IA Every Storm a Serenade (what I've been using most), but a different journey. Resonant is citrus and 'metallic notes' which is weird but I like it and I'm trying to use my paltry 1mL sample sparingly - might save it to try in warmer weather - because a full bottle is unjustifiably expensive for me.

I like the idea of Zoologist but the ones I've tried have mostly not been good

I need to catch up with the newer Mendittorosa ones. Le Mat is an all-time great.

A friend came over with her small but amazing collection— she has a preference for intense ambers, dirty rose, conifers and iris notes. Our interests are divergent but complimentary, I have a “I want to smell everything” attitude and she has a “I want to specifically smell like this particular thing and I’m going to invest in that, specifically” attitude.

The showstopper was unfortunately the breathtakingly expensive Areej “Siberian Musk”, I think in an attar concentration. I feel like I’d been betting against that company and their ridiculous price point and claims to the finest materials; I lost the bet.

The also-spectacular was Orto Parisi “Stercus”. I had no experience with that brand and this was something really amazing.

I’m off the new buys, and I’m taking a break from the homebrewing until I can find and purchase a better bergamot ingredient— the one I got isn’t working for me. Made some Chanel No.5 for my aunt-in-law and, honestly? better than store-bought, it turned out marvellous. I’ve been stumbling hard on all other assemblies :(
