NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Monday, 17 May 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Album release date at last:

Aeroplane; the remixers du jour and one of the most blogged and talked about acts in recent times, have been putting the finishing touches on their eagerly anticipated debut LP set for release on Sept 6th through Wall Of Sound in the UK.

Stevie T, Monday, 17 May 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Why release something which is so obviously gonna be a massive SUMMER record, in September?

3-D Whinge-ometer (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 May 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Because it's still nice and sunny in September? (or, it has been the past couple years)

Mark G, Monday, 17 May 2010 15:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Because we can listen to these mixes over the summer!

skip, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Here's hoping it leaks two months early.

Matt DC, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, no, I don't. Because I am going to be spending the entire month of July basically going OMG OMG SWOON OMG over the School of Seven Bells album. By September I might be prepared to listen to other music again.

3-D Whinge-ometer (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 May 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow. That new mix is pretty spectacular - easily one of the best mixes they've done for a long time.

And the album is almost certain to leak by August at the latest I'd have thought

That sounds hot, way better than on the BBC mix.

this is super dope

jonathan blapelbon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 20 May 2010 21:20 (thirteen years ago) link

ha, they got rid of the child vocals? or did they just cut them out of the sample? either way it's a summer jam

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

people in the UK must have bonerz for cheesy child vocals. we can fly (UK version)

ashra williams (san frandisco), Thursday, 20 May 2010 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

We can fly streaming over at Waves At Night

"According to Dirk (manager of Aeroplane/ex-A&R of Eskimo) the track was written a very long time ago and that “the rest of the album is better.” "

groovypanda, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:17 (thirteen years ago) link

if the album is considerably better than this song i'll probably just have a heart attack halfway thru

mr. milquetoast (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:31 (thirteen years ago) link

that compass point / grace jones groove is custom build for summer terrraces. needs to be at least 10 min longer, tho

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

^ this. and why would that guy insist that the rest of the album was better? is this single not getting a good reception?

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

needs to be at least 10 min longer, 6min 17sec long tho

*ahem*

Oh, *you're* American Booze DJs. I was wondering who that was on Mixcloud.

Using an Aural Exciter in an Orgone Accumulator (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 27 May 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

taking it down in 30 minutes.... already got beef with Zomby for unauthorised remixes.

i guess i shouldn't have slept till 2 pm today

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Playing in Philly tomorrow night w/ a Juan Maclean DJ set. Should I go? Convince me to go; I've never really listened to either.

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Do you like hands-in-the-air disco and piano house and cowbells?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

go! both have been super-fun when i've seen them.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Juan's DJ Kicks is fantastic, so I presume his DJ set can be too. And going by their monthly mixes I'd definately want to check out Aeroplane. If not fun for dancing, you could do some running around the floor - I find their mixes great to run to.

willem, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Now that's a double bill I might actually enjoy more than aErolplane.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Saw Aeroplane in Manchester last year. Erol was on straight after. I walked into the Juan Maclean room when Erol took the stage. It was a great decision.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Really depends on what Erol is doing. When I saw them together, he was doing a Disco 3000 set (not the usual rapey nanorobot shit) and it just went so well.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I would just avoid Erol on principle these days, just because of the high probability of rapy nanorobot shit. Also his fans are by and large knobs.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

This is unfortunately true. :-(

The only way to see him do a good set is to go to a set where he's not billed as Erol Alkan - a) if it's one of the side projects the knobs don't know about and b) he might actually play some decent music - the 6Mixes have been good, though. Just have to pry him out of Boys Noize's jock and make him do something interesting again.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm currently debating whether I want to go see Aeroplane at Death Disco in a fortnight - I do love them, but I don't love Death Disco and its mix of ear-bleedy bloghouse and hipsters posing for photo-blogs. If only The Juan MacLean was billed as well...

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

My friend should already have bought my half price DD ticket. Loathe the club in general but can't help it. Will never top that Stereo performance last year.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Also when Aeroplane played DD New Year the crowd didn't care because he wasn't Erol.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

The half-price issue is exactly why I'm debating it now and not in two weeks when it's actually happening, like fuck am I paying full-price for a DD ticket.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

was hoping for more out of this breakbot remix but hey it happens

156, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

wth is rapey nanorobot shit?

flamelurker (cozen), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the loutishly aggressive stuff Erol plays to the big crowds

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh god like DEATH SUITE?? God!

I quite like it. Not their best by a long way though.

groovypanda, Friday, 11 June 2010 07:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Rapey nanorobot = all that hyper-aggressive Boys Noize type "BANG BANG BANG no subtlety no dimension ARGH did he just manage to play a Major Lazer remix that was even WORSE than the original? god make it STOP my head my head" crap that he plays when he does big shows. It's like... take Justice's most annoying song (and hey, I like Justice) and run it through bitcrusher. (Yeah, I said Death Suite sounded like being fuX0red to death by angry nanorobots and he took it as a COMPLIMENT so that's the kind of thing you're dealing with yuck yuck yuck.)

The complete opposite of the Aeroplane aesthetic, mind you, so I don't know why I'm talking about it here. Sorry.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Friday, 11 June 2010 09:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Erol didn't play all this nanorobot stuff when he DJd at Trash did he? What was the point where he moved from DJing melodic song based stuff into this hard dance sound?

NI, Sunday, 13 June 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, Erol has some bug up his arse about wanting to keep the whole "Trash aesthetic" pure (of, you know, playing an interesting mixture of all kinds of music, indie and pop and dance etc. - you know, what he got famous for?) and not export it or do it at Festivals and big gigs because that would, like, compromise his art or his brand or something. I have no idea as to this reasoning, because he gets really defensive and bitchy if you actually ask him about it.

I dunno, it's just weird that he would spend so long cultivating this whole distinctive and exclusive... *thing* with Trash (though I've shot my mouth off on this messageboard before about that, and the whole "dress codes and bouncers" bullshit) and then so gleefully dismantle and destroy it under the guise of "protecting" it.

But, I guess if I were in his position, and I found myself suddenly playing to thousands of exactly the kind of knobs who used to beat up the people who went to "my" club, then I might get protective and insular about "my" music as well. Or something.

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I suppose it's his version of "playing all the single a-sides" at Wembley, and "doing the b-sides" at Dingwalls. (a'la Blur)

I know which gig I'd rather go to, but ask the genpop and they'd say different. I guess...

Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

It wasn't Dingwalls, it was the Electric Ballroom. And I know, because I was at that gig. (And Wembley as well, mind you.)

Cornish Kraffthwyrken (Masonic Boom), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

(I knew you were (sulk), I was just guessing as I couldn't recall)

Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:37 (thirteen years ago) link

So aside from the 'Trash brand' stuff, Erol played *some* of this noisy hard stuff at Trash and then decided that was the sound that would work in big clubs/festivals? (Not true surely: 2ManyDJs, Aeroplane, Villa etc all manage a great crowdpleasing mix of non-earbleed danceable songs.)

I'd love to read his thoughts and reasoning on it all as it seems crazy to take his wide-ranging and ectastic DJing style then cut it all down to 90% pummelling technonoize. I caught his set over the weekend and it was the usual relentless beats until the Atrak remix of YYYs whereupon the tent went crazy, camera flashes everywhere, people singing along, really going for it, then another 20 minutes of angry techno and nodding heads. Is it just a drug thing? It clearly works as he's headlining bills everywhere, I just don't *get* it.

This doesn't apply to his BTWS and Disco 3000 sets btw, one of my favourite clubbing experiences of the past few years was dancing in a half-full sideroom to this.
