You guys, the Clash or Rump Shaker sampling isn't what made it a hit, it was the gunshot & cash register samples! OBVIOUSLY!!!

We should all be trying to figure out which Dirty Harry movie they're taken from.

Really the only thing more annoying than people who won't drop a stupid argument are people who proclaim loftily how stupid everyone participating in the argument is.

love born free in the same way that deej hates paper planes. it's cool entirely because of the suicide riff and doesn't add anything to it. other than some xtrmntr-style noise acceleration that only trades beauty for obviousness. and the "PEW!" noise in the beginning. love that.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

okay, i lied. i don't "love" born free. i only kind of almost like it. for a minute or two. then it makes me want to hear ghost rider.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a much, much better version of XXXOhere.

Blancminaj (Spinspin Sugah), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 22:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm going to mention again that deej is using the same half-assed criticisms ("amusical" "dependent on a catchy sample for a hit") to dismiss MIA that have been used against hip-hop artists since the genre was born (though yes, he's consistent about only using the half-assed criticisms when he doesn't like the artist). I'm mentioning it because I want to know what he doesn't know.

appropriate -- lazy criticism for a lazy artist. it doesnt matter that morons have criticized rap for the same thing, that doesnt invalidate its use as criticism! and im sorry but "when he doesnt like the artist" is the basis for like all criticism ever?? i mean, i dont have anything against MIA as a *person* if thats what yr implying. but i think her music is wack & im explaining why i think so, which is the basis for well all criticism

I think more people have been arguing that she quoted "Rump Shaker" than that quoting "Rump Shaker" made it a hit. but please feel free to continue railing against a strawman that doesn't even bolster your argument.

hey condescending moderator #1 if someone actually argues a point in a thread it no longer becomes a 'strawman'

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

someone once said Run DMC only had a hit because they sampled aerosmith, ergo its impossible to credit bowie/queen with helping give vanilla ice a hit!!

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty confident we all agree that there's a difference between a song that samples another song and a mash-up, right? To my ears, "Paper Planes" always sounded more like a mash-up a la "Piracy Funds Terrorism" than a sample, but since I love the Clash song mightily, the more I hear it the happier I am. In fact, I'm pretty able to tune MIA right out whenever I hear it, which is and has always been virtually nil, surprisingly, for an alleged hit.

FWIW, the Suicide in "Born Free" sounds more like a sample in a song and not a mash-up, which doesn't make it better or worse but makes the bit's inclusion less overtly aggressive (for lack of a better word).

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

deej, it is kind of amazing to me that you make money with words considering that you can't read.

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:15 (thirteen years ago) link

hey, thanks for linking to that xxxo mix, spinspun. can't say i like it any better than the official version (?), but it's interesting. what it reveals more than anything is that the vocal should be a hit. just needs a track that works with it and adds something to it (to change the argument up a little). maybe some remixer will hit the sweet spot.

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think 'lazy' or 'difficult' enters into this criticism -- i thought what i was saying was self-evident & am mildly perturbed to see so many ppl actually really think shes been doing something super fresh

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, if hes saying its OBVIOUS criticsm, ok, its obvious. i havent come up w/ some clever theory like hey limp bizkit is actually GOOD or whatever stands for a miccio challop these days but i still think im right so

aside from not particularly liking or respecting M.I.A. as an artist I don't know if there's a single thing you've said in this thread that I agree with

some dude, Thursday, 13 May 2010 01:47 (thirteen years ago) link

if u want to do a parallel with like Ma$e or someone, i could write a few paragraphs defending 'feel so good' & saying what dude brings to that beat that the original didnt have. so far the arguments ive heard in favor of whatever it was MIA did to this clash song arent real convincing to me. i dont feel like she brought much to it ! i dont understand why saying this is so hypocritical just because HI DERE doesnt get Ma$e but imo the onus is on MIA fans to defend her work, not on me to come up w/ some never-before-heard method of dissing it, particularly since anything other than what ive already said that this pt would be dishonest

debate is a bit too high strung for its own good but honestly itt people needlessly hardmanning deej for not liking mia's contribution to 'paper planes.' or am i missing something?
