you're conflating two different things here: people 'give her credit' for having two albums that are critical favorites. That her sole pop hit happens to have a prominent sampled hook doesn't make her much different from a LOT of rappers.

i don't get why people are always talking about run-dmc when their only top ten hit was all about fucking aerosmith

Every US poster who was actively listening to the radio in 1992-1993 who didn't immediately catch the "Rump Shaker" reference needs to pay more attention to, like, EVERYTHING.

Um, as it was pointed out, it was BARELY A REFERENCE. Glancing, at best.

Realllllly don't get the "abrasive" line on "xxxo." I'm not sure it's hit material, just hooks-wise or whatever (I also don't think she really gives a shit) but sonically it's not more jarring or irritating than half the stuff on the radio right now.

also the Rump Shaker thing is way more than "all I wanna do is," it's "all I wanna do is VERB VERB VERB and a VERB VERB! blah VERB your VERB!"

haha dude christ. Daniel already typed both choruses out, it's not like the words "all i wanna do" are the only thing they share in common, it's practically the same chorus with a couple words/sounds swapped out.

I dunno I guess its cuz the phrase is stretched over the beat differently (and the song is also a much slower bpm, no?) than the Wreckx-n-Effects track that it just never popped out at me. Rump Shaker blurs together with like half a dozen other 90s pop rap hits for me (like N 2 Deep and shit like that)

Don't think I'd have recognised XXXO as an M.I.A. song if I hadn't been told. On first impression I'm not that keen but it's prob catchy enough that I'll love it in a week or so.

hahahahahahahahaha wait, so you are basically saying that having a different ending somehow makes the exact match of rhythmic cadence of the phrases leading up to the point irrelevant?

how on earth is the rump shaker reference 'obscure'? that song was fairly big, wasn't it? i don't know nearly as much about music as most of you and certainly did not listen to the radio at that time but i could tell where the chorus was from on first listen -- maybe i didn't remember the name of the artist, but it's clearly recognizable.

"hit that" prompted tom br3ihan to make the specific claim in 2007 that "'Rump Shaker' seems to have stuck around in the mass-culture worldmind way more than just about any other random hit I can think of from that era"

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/statusainthood/archives/2007/05/on_the_continui.php

but if u look his evidence is extremely scant and the article seems a face-saving exercise following an incident where he, dude writing about rap for the village voice, appeared to demonstrate that he had not heard Nations of Millions and caught flack around the rap internetz.

zvookster, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

"seems to have stuck around in the mass-culture worldmind way more than just about any other random hit I can think of from that era" is always going to be a dumb statement, no matter what its subject. these things always depend on whom you ask. and so maybe just maybe it might be true in america for some people. but where mia grew up, it just isn't true, at all, ever.

ne way what are we even talking about? omg she took an instrumental sample and adapted a vocal hook? truly unprecedented behaviour from a recording artiste.

no diggity is better. but it's true that "rump shaker" reached "u can't touch this" levels of ubiquity in socal in the early 90s. i heard that song a bazillion times in middle school. without even trying to hear it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

No Diggity = forever awesome.

Also, if you go to http://neetrecordings.com/blog/ the version of XXXO streaming is apparently the original Blaqstarr produced one. The version released as a single on iTunes etc. has production from Blaqstarr and Rusko and sounds pretty different. Not sure how I feel about the solo Blaqstarr take on it, but you can't find it anywhere else.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 11 May 2010 21:20 (thirteen years ago) link

personally i was just shooting the breeze abt rump shaker and bringing up three year old rap writer beefs. i don't like XXXO so i don't have much else to talk about.

the deej position on "paper planes" is oddly common & always seems so hilarious to me, like ppl don't like an artist but then having a hit seems to validate the artist for some reason so they have to undermine the validation in some way. as if disliking the artist isn't enough, you have to show that even a hit record doesn't demonstrate any importance "oh it's just the clash". from a rap writer it's esp. odd.

one more thing u could say about the "rump shaker" ref in "paper planes" is that it probably attracted kanye, timbaland, t.i. & jay-z, since rap is pretty sensitive to iterations and refs like that. "culture worldmind" is a bad phrase but something like that obviously exists in hip hop. so it's kind of interesting to have something specific, more than merely a chick saying swagger in a cadence that seemed cool, that may have drawn them to an iteration of their own.

nothing is better than no diggity
No Diggity = forever awesome.
