i've been listening to shawnna's "rpm" a lot recently and it really is secretly the best song of the 00s - never fails to make first-time listeners go O_O

Dubplate Wonder - Bashment Funk

What's this?

New Crystal Castles is ridiculously addictive. "Baptism" would be my pick.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Tim, it's from his new EP "Wonderful"...three new (?) tracks plus Anthem Hype Dub for some reason. It's a pretty solid release, no vocals, but pretty exciting all the same.

this is a blatant pander-to-tim maneuver but the new bay stuff is clearly the funky house of u.s. rap

There probably should be a better comparison but I totally get yr point (assuming yr point is secret innovation, winning synthesis of so many great things that underwhelms outsiders b/c they're looking for more blatant signifiers of newness etc)

Tim F, Thursday, 13 May 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yes also general stuff we've summarized before re: populism vs. popular etc

one month passes...

India - Estupida

(but probably a few other tracks from her new album Unica, which might turn out to be the first album of hers I really like. The English language "Smile" and "Crying" are both good as well.)

Also new versions on Boris's Variations:

Rainbow
Naki Kyoku

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Sunny Jain - Ya Mera Khuda

(I know this is pretty obscure, but it's an interesting Indo/prog rock/jazz fusion fusion. Somewhat weird to hear this vocalist move from a (relatively?) traditional Indian style of some sort into melodies that you might find in Sally Oldfield, or something like that.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

favorite song of the year (streaming):
Sin Ropas - The Fever You Fake
(One of only 2 real rockers on their album released back in April. There needed to be more rockers)

Foster The People - pumped up kicks

http://bit.ly/akFkng

So yep... it's sort of 'young folks' revamped and most of ilm might hate it but I'm extremely addicted to this song atm.

woah great song btw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78knidd1qLE

oddball intro is a bit crap but the her sound has a very appealing home lo-fi quality which the video compliments nicely.

Moka, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:56 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the intro isn't actually part of the song

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 02:57 (thirteen years ago) link

but maybe song of the year imo

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 02:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel like someone should moderator request that youtube be removed and replaced with one without that intro bcuz we do not want to risk tainting people's first exposure to this wonderful song

I think this song has been around for a little while (and have filled the Afro-Latin thread with Juliana youtube links), but it seems like it's getting a release now as a U.S. single:

http://www.vimeo.com/15459835

Anyway, I'm excited she's got what seems to be a U.S. domestic CD release slated for November.

three weeks pass...

I'm probably going to nominate this for our ILM poll at the end of next week (but I'm holding on to two open spots just in case, since I have been doing some last minute 2010 album downloading and you never know). I think it's probably better without the video, despite the women, some of whom are somehow stolen from my own fantasies:
