Lady Gaga - Alejandro

I think I am holding the fact that "Alejandro" sounds almost exactly like an Ace of Base song against it a little too much, esp. since I liked Ace of Base.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

A terrific year for singles so far (which I'll post in a few), but albums -- meh. So many lol-indie albums! Any great R&B records released? Sade's was meh; Erykah Badu's was just good, the sort of thing that finishes the year in the teens or twenties.

the sort of thing that finishes the year in the teens or twenties.

Don't see how this is a bad thing in 2010, when online publications are reviewing 500+ albums per year, and P&J goes well over 1,000 albums. I'm usually quite enamored of anything that ends up placing in, say, my top 30.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

A few (I've been pretty album oriented this year, but I guess that's normal for me):

Jowell & Randy - No Fue Una Noche Normal
Daddy Yankee - La Señal
Daddy Yankee - Vida en la Noche
Daddy Yankee - Rumba y Candela
[but really pretty much that whole album]
J. Alvarez - Ella Esta Encendia con Letra
[from 2009]
El Gran Combo - Achilipu
Janelle Monae - Tightrope
Marina & the Diamonds - Hollywood
Marina & the Diamonds - Oh No!
[but definitely the whole album]

Was going to say Rox's "My Baby Left Me," but I'm already kind of sick of it. She has a great voice though, so I will be listening for more.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 6 May 2010 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

a few favorite songs off the top of my head, no order

Charles Albright - "I'm On Drugs"
Broken Water - "Say What's On Your Mind"
Magic Lantern - "Showstopper"
No Balls - "Subsequent Needs"
Young Governor - "Call Me When The Cat Dies" (Absolutely love this song)

van smack, Thursday, 6 May 2010 04:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Specifically "My Baby Left Me" seems to sing-songy, and it feels like it's all coming too easily to her. Not that things coming easily is necessarily bad, but here there's something about it that makes it a problem, to me. I'm kind of hoping I'll change my mind though, because I'd like to be listening to her voice. Maybe the song will sound different in the context of a whole album.

Also, I think that Jowell & Randy track would be of interest to general "dance music" fans, though maybe you have to be a little familiar with pop bachata beats to understand what's so distinctive about the way they take off from that.

Something about the big budget album version is RONG. Can't put my finger on it. The demo that (I) floated around (via Fluxblog) in 2008 is greatly superior.

3) dj quik ft. suga free - nobody

^^^^^^^

It's a fine Quik song but really nothing that stands out in his catalog.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 6 May 2010 13:06 (fourteen years ago) link

well that's one way of thinking about, i just thought "WOW THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS I'VE HEARD ALL YEAR" and wrote it down in a list and posted it on ilx. ordering on my list was really just an excuse to put yahzarah at number one anyways tbh, but if we're gonna get into dj quik's discography i like 'nobody' as much as my favourite songs off blaqkout.

ayo for dyao (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 6 May 2010 13:11 (fourteen years ago) link

would i be a total shit in saying that there's very little appearing above that i'm thinking "i must really check that out"? i can't think of much coming out in 2010 that i'm particularly looking forward to either :-( 2010 and all its portent seems to be largely retreading last year's territory what with all the gagas and dj quiks etc... that might be me being very myopic though. haven't had the internet in a while due to house moves etc.

lol @ the idea that *last year* was when u should start paying attention to dj quik

& you might like it as much as the blaqkout stuff, samosa, but it sounds a lot like his pre-blaqkout shit -- bq was good cuz he was really stretching out on it, but it still sounded fun/funky/party-ready. 'nobody' is dece but not exactly blowing my mind or anything. if you like it, check the 1st two suga free albums, 'rhythmalism' & the two lp's after that

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:37 (fourteen years ago) link

ya i mean, my point was basically that i enjoy the song as a dude who's oblivious to the narrative of dj quik and suga free's respective careers, just a dope hip hop song to me. obviously ever since listening to blaqkout i've been meaning to check out his previous stuff though, suga free now added to list as well.

ayo for dyao (samosa gibreel), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it doesn't really sound like his work from that era tho (even if it's quite obv the work of the same guy), much more brashly synthetic

moderator requiem forum (The Reverend), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont think thats really the case -- hes def used synth keybs like that before -- and even if it is the effect isnt particularly surprising or notable. compared to quik classics like 'buck bounce' or 'up n da club' its pretty standard album track type generic funk jam

Forgot Class Actress's "Let Me Take You Out". "Adolescent Heart" has the most amazing neo-Nena buildup in the verse before the bottom completely falls out of the chorus. If they had just repeated that chord progression!
