Wait, we've been through this, because I posted "an" and a photo from WKRP sometime in 2006.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Hahah. Isn't the exception for "historical" done because of the word "ahistorical", meaning, not historical at all? That is what has been exlpained to me but I'm suspicious and stick with an.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Er, sorry, I meant to say that I stick with a.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd never heard that, Laurel. And I'm not sure it holds up because you're more likely to pronounce the "a" in front of "historical" (and related words) as "uh": "uh historic moment," "uh historian of the Civil War."

xpost Good. I was about to say.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Anna's an anorexic.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Ahistorical - you think this shit just dropped right out of the sky
My analysis: it's time to harvest the crust from your eyes
To surge and refine, to rage and define ourselves against your line
So sorry friend but you must resign
You want to figure it out we'll throw down, we'll throw down
Wou want to figure it out well throw down your bulldog front
Bold bold mouthtalking not so bold now that you've eaten your own
Lips flecked, mouthspecked you strip the skin right off of the bone
And I would never say you act without precision or care,
But it's all attention to armor, to the armor you wear so well
Let's knock and check to see if there's somebody home

dan m, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Re pronounciation of "a", I doubt "uh" is any more likely to be used before historic than any other word. I'm not up on my regional linguistics hallmarks, but isnt the ay/uh distinction partly geographic?

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

WTF

MarryOurDaughter

I doubt "uh" is any more likely to be used before historic than any other word.

Agree with you there. I'm unaware who actually pronounces "a" as "ay" in contexts other than wanting to emphasize the word.

The distinction between "thuh" and "thee" has to do with whether it's before a vowel or not, but "a" has already solved that with "an."

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

oh wow

Marry Our Daughter is an introduction service assisting those following the Biblical tradition of arranging marriages for their Daughters.

dan m, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I meant to mention this to John earlier, but there is this essay/review of a book about e-mail etiquette, and it talks about why exclamation marks are more common in e-mail than in other forms of writing.

Also for some reason I thought of John when I read about this book.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

ok holy shit @ marryourdaughter

Kyra likes the outdoors, more the open air of the beach or the desert than the woods. She would love to live somewhere away from it all. She is bright and funny and full of life and while she has little direct experience with the opposite sex we have made sure she is aware of everything she needs to know to be a good wife and mother.

river wolf, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Kristin has a wild streak. She likes parties and has spent more time with boys than we’d have liked her to. We had a family talk and decided that it was time she settled down with a man who could meet her needs and help her fulfill her dreams of being an actor or singer. She’s a bit fiery but worth it.

river wolf, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that "Marry Our Daughter" thing a joke? It has to be, right?!

sweet tater, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think it's a joke.

"Sarah calls herself a Goth but we insisted she not dress in black for this photo. She reads and writes a lot of depressing poetry and it takes a lot to get her nose out of a book. She says she’s an Old Soul in a new young body and she’s already been married lots of times and she might die again tomorrow so why wait?"

OH YEAH

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link

When I was a kid my parents would always watch The McNeil/Lehrer News Hour. I, of course, thought it was boring as hell. Once I counted all the "uhh"s, "um"s, etc from all the guests and the hosts. I don't recall the exact number but there were several hundred.

xposts: hm, some googling indicates it may be a prank

dan m, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

okay maybe it's a joke

horseshoe, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

EZ- We are going to be homebodies again (well, going on a walk and checking out the guitar nick posted/ going to library..)! Thanks for the idea though (and you too, deej).

Kristin has a wild streak. She likes parties and has spent more time with boys than we’d have liked her to.
We’re a Christian family and Cheyenne has had trouble with unchristian desires although at heart we know she's a good Christian girl.
WHAAA?

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

It better be a joke, there's a 13-yr old on here.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

How does one determine their price? One of the girls is just over $99K whereas one is just under $6K. Is that the price of virginity?!

I think it HAS to be a joke.

sweet tater, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

no way that's real

I love reading transcripts of speech with all the "uh"s and "um"s included.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

MarryOurDaughter is a great hoax, though, inasmuch as it preys on our willingness to believe the worst about Christian fundamentalists.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I figured it was totally fake, but I figured it would be worth a look anyway.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Surely no one has ever married their daughter off at a young age in order to keep her out of trouble, no.

river wolf, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, we don't believe that stuff for no reason at all, there's at least a reasonable amount of weirdness to go on.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

And according to the NYT.
