i agree w/ you about her as an MC or w/e -- you're just being really ignorant re: why people like "paper planes"

imo here, but that melodic hook is the bulk of the reason that song is a hit, imo. i know there are people out there who appreciate her persona or whatever, but i think theres a big reason that song was a hit and not her more abrasive stuff

wait, is it officially sad to love "paper planes" now?

la senora (surm), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i know people who like paper planes bro. i was at a bar the other night playing the buzzards band and this girl was like 'whos this covering MIA???' im just suggesting that its not the people you know who put that song on the charts

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link

for people who don't give lots of pop/rap music the time of day, yes

J0rdan S., Monday, 3 May 2010 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I couldn't stand the "Paper Planes" beat for a long time (not cause I didn't like the use of the sample, I'd never heard the Clash song previous...I just found the sound of it offputting) and eventually got into it cause I loved her vocals so much.

WE THE VIKING (The Reverend), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link

it's just bananas to suggest you make a point to never like a track that doesn't "add" to the interpolation, that you're consistent about only liking songs that "add" to the original. where's the arbitrary point where you've officially added something (like ma$e) than tossing on so much worthless garnish (like mia)?

xpost the "melodic hook" of paper planes isn't from "straight to hell" either

da croupier, Monday, 3 May 2010 03:08 (thirteen years ago) link

and even then, im sure your friends like it because of the clash sample as well -- its totally catchy!! its the best part of the song

i mean "paper planes" has its own hook, for one -- not to mention that the beat under the verses has "laffy taffy" drums which makes it v danceable

yeah, the laffy taffy drums are big part of why "Paper Planes" is awesome too

im talking about the melodic hook of the background, not her corny chorus or corny found-sound samples.

and its not 'bananas' to have opinions about songs miccio -- of course this consistency is entirely an internal system, just as your taste is for you. im not claiming some universal truth to my opinions!! its subjective, but yes i happen to think theres a line where i dig artist who i feel are 'adding something' to a sample, and dont dig artists who arent -- im not implying it has to be lyrically lyrical rap -- i like some eryakah badu one-track jacks (and think its goofy when ppl give props to others, like the new amerykah intro where i didnt think she was adding anything)

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:11 (thirteen years ago) link

the catchiest melody in "Paper Planes" is the verses, dude

WE THE VIKING (The Reverend), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

you're just being an idiot -- "paper planes" relies on the sample as much (and less!) as tons of just blaze/kanye records do

J0rdan S., Monday, 3 May 2010 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

again, you can like whatever you like, deej, but the only thing you're consistent about is thinking that songs you like add something and songs you don't don't.

the song has multiple melodic 'hooks' -- im suggesting hers isnt the reason its a huge success, that clash sample once again is super catchy. rev can say whatever he wants about why he likes the song, but i think theres a reason that song was a hit and not, like, pull up the people

i've danced to it a few too many times but i still love 'paper planes' a lot and i'm at pains to figure out what's sad about that

cuz it has a kitschy but memorable chorus and sounds like snap music?

I thought "Paper Planes" was a huge hit because it's very catchy and was marketed very well?

i dont think anyone arguing this here disagrees with this -- we're arguing over which aspect of the song was 'very catchy' -- i think the sample was doing a lot of the heavy lifting

that was the '1% marketing' thing. but my guess would be that if theyd used pull up the people instead, it wouldn't have been as big of a hit

deej usually when people say "this song adds something to the sample and this one doesn't" they DON'T just mean "i like this one and i don't like that one." because those two phrases don't mean the same thing.

da croupier, Monday, 3 May 2010 03:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, it's impossible to isolate the catchiness from its patchwork nature: she's lifted from two or three different sources, which coincides with the miscellaneous agitprop that are her lyrics.

deej i think your main problem is that you're trying to talk about a song that went billboard top 10 and you're ignoring, for instance, the chorus

i agree -- if you think i dont, you're misunderstanding me. im not trying to make universal rules here when i mention 'consistency' -- its not like im setting up some rockist system BEFORE i hear a song -- i listen to a song, i like it or dont, i try to express why. this is exactly what im doing -- why dont i love this MIA single as much as other people do? its got a catchy beat, sampling a song i like, and if it had a good rapper/singer/someone worthwhile over it, id probably like it.

ok, you're conflating things.

1. REASONS WHY PAPER PLANS IS POPULAR, IMO
sample does a lot of heavy lifting
its got some other gimmicks (sound efx, snap drums, whatever folks like about it) that different people can lock onto after being pulled in by the sample

2. REASONS I DONT LIKE PAPER PLANES THAT MUCH
i like the sample
the gimmicks dont particularly draw me in, nor do the reasons you guys mention in this thread -- im not impressed by gunshot efx (if anything they put me off on this one), i dont get anything out of 'ringsnap drums' on the track, i dont think her melody is engaging, etc.

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think ppl would love the song w/out that sample in teh background, snap drums & gunshot effects or no (in fact, i have some mixtapes with both snap drums and gunshot effects you guys can listen to if you want)

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:24 (thirteen years ago) link

& they also have dude from D4L who is imo a better melodic artist

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Monday, 3 May 2010 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

deej, it's not that she didn't add anything (seeing as how you just listed a bunch of things she added), you just didn't like what she added. so saying you're "consistent" about only liking songs that add to the sample is at best meaningless, at worst screwball.

da croupier, Monday, 3 May 2010 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

its got some other gimmicks (sound efx, snap drums, whatever folks like about it) that different people can lock onto after being pulled in by the sample

okay even if you're gonna try & wiggle out of this by saying that the WHOLE song boils down to the sample & sound efx, you at least have to realize that mia did things like, you know, choosing the sound efx, placing them in the song, putting them into a context ("all i wanna do is *gunshots*), making sure they work in the song etc
