Oh boy, ILX! That's where I'm a viking!..?

yeah it was hilarious--i was setting up the question just like whiney did, but i offered "literally a viking" first, and then she completed my sentence with option a, because that's what she always thought it was, and because option b isn't funny, and she basically nailed all the classic a arguments in about 5 minutes. my jaw just dropped--it was so hilarious and perfect.

but she is smart and opinionated and strong-willed and neither of us were about to be swayed so we laughed and she made fun of me for engaging in a weeklong debate abt it on ilx, and those are all reasons why i <3 her so much.

I introduced the question to a couple friends the other night, and it was like an instant rehash of this thread, almost beat for beat.

the way the B-ers are so resolute really makes u think ... about their extreme need for stability in an unstable world

the way the B-ers are so resolute really makes u think ... that maybe they know they're right & don't need "everything's subjective!" crutches with which to parse easy jokes

I understand that point of view - it
s the same way that rational peoples certainty makes m,a a creationist and a global warming denialist.

seriously A-voters - welcome to reality, where sometimes you're wrong & have to come up with all kinds of extraneous nonsense instead of going "hmm...maybe the overwhelming consensus here is meaningful"

kinda like with creationism & global warming, where the overwhelming scientific consensus indicates that while little is certain, we're certain enough that the creationists & deniers are wrong

i think reality is a much more nuanced place, and that your resoluteness is as bad as dem party supporter blindly apologizing for every bad move democrats make -- sometimes the truth is complicated

am0n, Sunday, 2 May 2010 18:30 (fourteen years ago) link

if you dont think theres a subtext of him being an adventurer/explorer in the world of sleep by using 'viking' rather than, i dont know, potato, then you are being willfully ignorant. i said it before -- the way its written obviously indicates this. the idea that its hardline "he just means he is a viking -- theres no way he could also be implying that hes a hero of sleep during sleep" is some literalist objectivist bs

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Sunday, 2 May 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

u created the subtext out of thin air

am0n, Sunday, 2 May 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

If I was the writer and knew about this, I would probably have killed myself by now, and pinned a note to my chest that read "Gone to where I'm a viking."

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 2 May 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, his viking dreams are undoubtedly full of adventure, perhaps he feels like a champion during them. this is not the same as the A argument, and if you can't see the difference I don't know what to tell ya.

Ralph said, "I'm a furniture," and at the end it turned out that England was watching Springfield as a reality show on TV and Queen Elizabeth said, "I will miss that Ralph boy, he reminds me a bit of my own boy," and Prince Charles walked in holding a cat and said, "Oh mummy, my cat's breath smells like cat food."

Yeah, I think deej has defended A but only to the extent that his interpretation incorporates both A and B. So it is incorrect to claim that he's always been on A's side.

Prince Charles walked in holding a cat and said, "Oh mummy, my cat's breath smells like cat food."

This is the most painful thing, when a new Simpsons ep bites a very beloved old SImpsons joke. The last time I watched it, they redid the "island was actually a peninsula" joke, and then I think we might have broken up, me & "The Simpsons."

god they actually do that now? how depressing.
