Now at:
"I dream I'm a viking" (183) 65.59%
"I'm a champion sleeper" (96) 34.41%

so 13-3 to the Bs since Cozen posted the link.

I actually found that poll before the link was posted in this thread, and I voted B.

i'm not saying that's the reason you guys are wrong. i'm saying it's interesting enough to be worth mentioning that the 2 biggest vikings of option A have that in common. i said it, there's not much more to say imo, but you can continue to dwell on it and pontificate on what kind of person that makes me if you like.

I'm a solid option A person as indicated several times above and English was my first language.

However, I grew up overseas and was fluent in French at age 5, so my theory is that multilingual people (i.e. smarter people) are more likely to follow the option A interpretation.

i look forward in 7 hours or so to discovering that this is like all the ILM polls where fifty lurkers who never posted send "Everybody Hurts" to the top of the charts, and the Excellers begin their long reign of triumph

Doctor Casino, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

As opposed to linguistically rigid monolingual people, who seem to be fixated on a literal interpretations?

i'm trying to kill it with puns, it works on every other thread, but srsly-yes pls.

Actually I was living overseas because my father was a diplomatic representative of the GREAT COUNTRY OF THE U.S. of A. to lesser nations, but nice try.

wait, are we back to the "vikings were militarily weak historical losers, therefore ralph would not associate them with excelling" thing?

love that "an open mind" is what people who get a joke are missing - you A people, let me know if you're ever teaching a formal reasoning class so I can cruise along to an improved GPA by blowing your minds about how a lotta stuff if just your opinion, man

in all seriousness though would somebody who is viking at internet please get on a script that'll allow us to add a "hide all posts by people who voted 'A' in the 'where I'm a viking' poll" option to our settings? will improve user experience for 65% of the board

imo the mods should create a special subboard only A people can post on, and let the rest of us study how they interact in isolation.

just wanted to talk about the word emphasis after watching it on youtube

ralph says "SLEEP! Thats where I'M a VIking" - I used to hear this pattern all the time with my kids, it indicates that they think they are, or at least are pretending to be something ( I'M a RObot, I'M a COOL girl, I'M a MONster ): equal emphasis on I'm and Viking, implying equivalence.

compare that to the metaphorical use, which would usually be "i'm a MONSTER", "i'm a VIKING", ie all the emphasis on the metaphor.

But Ralph's voice isn't done by a real kid rather than an adult.

Anything With Bagpipes (HI DERE), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

au contraire mon frere, sorry to break it to you but NAGL has been misused by generations of ILXORs, in fact it is used to describe a situation in basketball where a player forces a shot without getting a good look at the basket, hence it is 'not a [good look]', sorry to break it to you but you've been committing malapropisms for your entire ILX life
