dyao, i don't think it's necessarily racist to point out that a non-native speaker of english might be more prone to pick up the meaning of a joke in an english programme incorrectly. seriously, after 700 posts it was an avenue that probably had gone unasked for quite a while.

i'm not assuming anything about your level of english, and i know from years of arguing nonsense with him that tuomas's is excellent, even if i think he's a master troll.

Anyway, it's May Day, a big drinking festival here in Finland, sadly I have to leave this thread in order to party some. I probably won't be on the net before Sunday, it'll be interesting to see whether the debate is still going on then.

(several x-posts)

Now at:
"I dream I'm a viking" (183) 65.59%
"I'm a champion sleeper" (96) 34.41%

so 13-3 to the Bs since Cozen posted the link.

it's not the whole native/non-native distinction that bothers me (the more correct term that I think everybody is fishing for is fluency) it's the insinuation that if you're not part of a culture your judgments about that culture are open to being considered less valid & less correct. imo tuomas is fluent, native-level, and obviously spends a lot of time interacting w/ american culture, and to attack his argument based on the grounds that he is from Finland is pretty ethnocentric if you ask me

"that's where I'm a 'champion' " just sounds like a borderline nonsensical malapropism

so wait it's the phrasing in itself that's odd not just the fact that "viking" is not a granted metaphor for being good at something? all this time i thought the latter was the argument here

sonderangerbot, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

he also is known for being the dude who asks stuff like "why are there so many helicopters in america?'

iatee, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not saying that's the reason you guys are wrong. i'm saying it's interesting enough to be worth mentioning that the 2 biggest vikings of option A have that in common. i said it, there's not much more to say imo, but you can continue to dwell on it and pontificate on what kind of person that makes me if you like.

it's the insinuation that if you're not part of a culture your judgments about that culture are open to being considered less valid & less correct.

see, i'll actually not agree with you there. this is actually a 'right or wrong' issue imo, so not all judgements are 360-degrees valid.

imo tuomas is fluent, native-level, and obviously spends a lot of time interacting w/ american culture, and to attack his argument based on the grounds that he is from Finland is pretty ethnocentric if you ask me

read ur blogs, mayne. read ur blogs. I'm not gonna talk about Tuomas like he's not here, and imo he's a total viking of ILX, but he's got huge amounts of previous in not getting fairly simple/well accepted concepts that very few others of ANY culture struggle with.

the latter is the main argument, but I'm just saying even if you try to wrap your head around the metaphor thing, actually looking at the sentence that way is pretty sketchy. you think we can't dissect this thing on more than one level after 1k posts?

oh boy, luriqua's house! that's where M.I.A.'s dyking! (some dude), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

dyao makes a very valid point; Tuomas's fluency is better than many Americans

that doesn't mean his interpretation makes the slightest lick of sense tho

so wait it's the phrasing in itself that's odd not just the fact that "viking" is not a granted metaphor for being good at something? all this time i thought the latter was the argument here

every tribe here is made up of a myriad of villages, some more sensible than others

Yeah, I mean, you may as well just throw me out of the discussion too - - - I was born in Florida and did my book-learnin' in pathetic, backwards, non-fluent Georgia, so obviously I could have no legitimate opinion on the content of "The Simpsons," a show written by Ivy Leaguers and then broadcast to an audience of millions and millions of Americans and Finns. But maybe someone can review my past posting history and find proof that actually I do deserve the right to an opinion on a cartoon show.

iatee i know nothing about dyao, i based my comment on Tuomas saying he was a non-native English speaker before someone pointed out that that's apparently not correct.

I'm a solid option A person as indicated several times above and English was my first language.

However, I grew up overseas and was fluent in French at age 5, so my theory is that multilingual people (i.e. smarter people) are more likely to follow the option A interpretation.
