When Ralph dreams about being a viking - a generally excellent type of person, an achiever, an explorer on the cutting edge - it is ironic considering that Ralph is a special kid who sometimes does stuff like accidentally eat worms. The Simpsons writers chose "viking" rather than "goldfish" or anything else harmless because the difference between Ralph and a Viking is so great. Given that Ralph just experienced the humiliation of being excluded from the rest of the class, he (his character, as written by the Simpsons' writers) may have said "Viking" because that is a dream where he remembers having power. "Viking" is not a metaphor for being excellent at something or 1995 slang for the same.

I really don't think it is - it's essentially the political equivalent of "hipster," i.e., if it's a phantom, it's one everybody's seen enough of to know that they want to avoid it

I've no idea why this thread has 500+ answers, but I just wanted to say I've always thought it was the first option, because...

A) the way Ralph pronounces the sentence, and

B) a bullied little kid dreaming of being an actual Viking isn't much of a gag, but Ralph being a "Viking of sleep" is pretty funny.

If the second option would be true, it would be a rather bad joke.
