Black Fire = classic from the album cover inward.

(POD too, even though the art doesn't appeal to me as much. But what do I know?)

I am really into Black Fire right now. The tunes are strong, and this is the first I have heard Hill in a quartet. There is a lot of space and he takes advantage. Roy Haynes' drumming on the first track reminds me of Tony Williams, which is to say that Tony didn't come from nowhere.

Just got "Compulsion" for £2 in the HMV sale - BARGAIN is too small word to describe this, even with Caps Lock on

while we're talking about albums that aren't "POD", i have to say, "passing ships" is one of the best, really

Tom D, if you've never listened to Sun Ra's Other Planes of There, it's quite interesting to listen to alongside Compulsion, because at times Gilmore sounds like he's playing alternate versions of the same material. Even some of the rhythmic ideas on Compulsion strike me as similar to what's on Other Planes of There. (Not making any claims about influences though.)
Alas, I was never able to really get into Andrew Hill, including Point of Departure, which I really wanted to like. Compulsion I enjoy to some extent, but not so much more Hill's playing and composition.

Innaresting. Have never really been able to get into "Point of Departure" either, but am really liking "Compulsion", did find myself thinking it reminded me of Sun Ra somewhat...

Black Fire/Smoke Stack/Judgement/Point Of Departure/Andrew!!!/Compulsion
There is definitely some of kind of unusual talent and drive present when someone can seemingly bang out 6 extraordinary masterworks like these in a mere 2 year period. M Coleman and Timi Yuru upthread from years ago are both absolutely otm.
