WMP because none of the other programs I've tried have been anything but an unnecessary additional ball-ache

and ya thought that shit played out in ILX (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 April 2010 01:41 (thirteen years ago) link

don't use the library stuff

Me neither, I just drag folders into the Playlist Editor window.

Check this, in fact. How exciting. He literally cuts the mustard. (snoball), Saturday, 24 April 2010 10:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I used foobar.. on XP.

The new installs of foobar are definitely more GUI friendly- so to OP concerns, if you havent checked it out recently- you might want to. In fact, Ive resisted upgrading because of the differences in implementation

Media Monkey, it was a convenient tool to retag and organize 3500 albums, while remaining compatible with most WinAmp plug-ins.

First post.. Hi. I use XMPlay. It's got plugins for any formats I can think of(Many through support for WinAmp plugins.) Low memory usage(I'm told), Last.fm support. It works very well for my needs. There is a library function, but I've never used it so I can't really comment on that.

Just d/l'd Songbird, any else fond of it? I can't see any real compelling reasons to stop using iTunes aside from the customizability factor, which is at least easier than foobar's (one-click installations versus file extractions in foobar).... but def browsing last.fm profiles I'm seeing a hell of a lot more of it in the past couple weeks than I ever have in my life.

For playing, I use Winamp with classic skins ("steel this amp" for 10+ years now!). I use MediaMonkey for file management.

I've heard that it's different on Macs, but on PCs, Apple software behaves disturbingly like viruses. They don't tell me what they're doing and why, they do things I didn't tell them to do and don't want them to do, and they won't go away when I want them to, always hanging out in the background. I tried iTunes, but I was always afraid that I would click a single box incorrectly and the fucking thing would try to change the names and locations of all my mp3s.

foobar2000

i started using it ages and ages ago when it was significantly more memory-efficient than winamp and the like when i had a shitty pc, and now i'm too set in my ways to switch to something fancier

itunes cuz coverflow is the shit!!!

dazzle shjips (Future_Perfect), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 04:52 (thirteen years ago) link

foobar because i like the way it does playlists and i don't care about skins

Winamp on XP. I also don't utilize any library features. I'm sure that would make life easy, but I pretty much remember what albums are in what folders/drives.

For video, I usually just use WMP for anything that's not Apple-specific.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 05:13 (thirteen years ago) link

even the sound on foobar seems to be different but that might just be all in my head. once i used it, never really wanted to go anywhere else.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 05:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Media Monkey on XP. It drives me crazy that some of the tags i enter in MM don't show up when viewing the files in Windows (file manager, explorer, or, whatever they call it now). Monkey is great for filling artwork and tags in short order and for batch bitrate and format conversions (in-and-out-of ogg, wmv, mp3, m4a, flac, wav, etc). I still use media player as the default player as it's a one-stop for music and video (since i've also added all the necessary codecs to play/watch just about anything).

suspecterrain, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 06:44 (thirteen years ago) link

itunes (more likely spotify these days though) on XP
songbird on Ubuntu.

WMP mostly, and Magix Music Editor for, uh, music editing.

extremely low expectations (which, yes, were "met"). (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 08:39 (thirteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

revive. wasn't sure what thread we were using for this discussion...

i just switched from Dopamine to MusicBee, and i'm so much happier. gapless playback at last. it took an hour or so to migrate artwork and configure the program how i like it, but it's pretty much ideal. seems lightweight.

I still use Winamp on Windows, and also Qmmp on my Linux laptop (closest application I could find to Winamp for Linux).

Moved from Winamp to foobar2000, so at least from the 90s to the 00s.

Almost a decade after I posted on this thread and I still use J River Media Center, though the DAPs are long gone and now I stream from JRMC to my phone when I'm out and about.

foobar2000. wish there were some skins that didn't suck. i've got it set up pretty well, though, it just looks very unsexy basic old school windows GUI.

I love MusicBee. I switched to it from the lovely yet ugly foobar2000 some time ago and I haven't looked back. It's very lightweight indeed, handles a big FLAC library smoothly on my old Windows laptop, and you can make it look modern/prettier with skins. Also features a good tag/metadata editor and a format converter, and can play podcasts. Here's my setup:

Having been a long time Winamp holdout simply dragging stuff from my music folder into the playlist the browser and playlist organisation in foobar (which is still pretty basic rrally) was something of a revelation. Despite the name and logo it doesn't have some impenetrable 'alien' themed interface. Haven't managed to get MilkDrop running in yet though. Something to do with misaing DirectX.

Perhaps MusicBee is the next thing to investigate.

I'm using iTunes (mac) as the library manager, and the Plex app (phone) and PlexAmp (laptop) as players.

xpp winamp

right click folder -enqueue in winamp- and drag and drop both work

if what you were saying is that you want to fully integrate a file browser into the winamp media library (ie no import), The Ultimate Media Library Plugin works (I just tested on winamp v5.8 build 3660 x86)

three months pass...

my entire digital library of approx 64gb is now on a tiny little sd card inside in my phone. i picked up a sony phone earlier this year just for its amp stage and flac compatibility. there was a noticeable audio difference between the model and the other handsets in the store at the time. anyway, grandma is happy. what's your android music software of choice? all the ones i've looked up are ugly...

meaulnes, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 10:38 (four years ago) link

right now, samsung music app better than any other I've tried. it wasn't actually bundled with my samsung phone though, guess they have some deal to put other apps on there. I want to edit music (deleting & sorting mostly) in the app, and everything else I find is for listening only.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 10:46 (four years ago) link

I use the paid version of Poweramp and I'm very happy with it. By the way, you have that SD card backed up, right?

also if anyone knows any android music apps that have proper id3 editing functionality, especially with multiple files at once, please do tell

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 10:53 (four years ago) link

I use three so I can keep different playlists going without having to start them again - BlackPlayer, PowerAmp & Play Music

BlackPlayer lets you edit id3 info either individually or an album at a time

groovypanda, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 11:22 (four years ago) link

what I would really like is something integrated with google assistant, so I could say "google, delete this track" while I'm driving, and it actually deletes it rather than removing it from the play queue, guess this is science fiction still

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 11:29 (four years ago) link

I love blackplayer but I can't figure out how to make it work with my DAC :(
