Man, I hate this thread title. Next time: "Chicago: so 'literary' and lofty and ridiculous and just kill us all right now before we go on about ourselves any longer"

This thread title...I don't believe in jinxes, but still.... Even if it isn't a jinx, it's a bit arrogant.

ian, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't get the January thing. I hope that it didn't mean that we'll be bitter in the event of McCain's inauguration lol?

Sooooo... I think that I may be at a party with the Dem Veep candidate tomorrow night! My boss's friend is a personal friend of JB's and apparently his restaurant has been crawling with S3cr3t S3rvic3 folks all weekend. If anyone is interested, email me - $25 for open bar and appetizers on MI Ave, convenient to the rally. Starts around 6.

I'm as impressed by the low, low price tag as by JB's appearance.

Hey, Chicago. Welcome to what Texas and Arkansas has been for the past 20 years.

this thread title is drawing a lot of outside attention. I love it. :)

Also, what nick said about the olympics. I don't want 'em. I like being able to afford living here.

So much for Obamapalooza happening in the rain. Can't trust a 10-day forecast, I oughta know better. Instead, the weather will be like the good lord smiling on us. It is almost stupidly gorgeous outside.

I have to go on record as being very much against this thread title.

Pub quiz was kind of hard tonight. Round 2 definitely wasn't a Simpsons-related holiday round. We would have benefited from someone who was raised devout Catholic, knew obscure 80s one hit wonder artists, and who recognized both a former NFL commissioner and the guy who played Lt. Worf on Star Trek TNG (among other tidbits).

tender esl story, coming right up:

last summer i had a student named mohammed who was from iraq. he was an engineer in iraq, but was looking for a job - any job- here in chicago. he was in my class for like 2 weeks, maybe three. during that time, he requested that i help him get a dictionary like the ones we use in class. i said sure. other people said they wanted the dictionaries too, so i ordered a bunch of used ones from various sellers via abeb00ks. the second or third week of class he told me that he got a job at a hotel as "hotelman" and that his schedule would prevent him from attending class and he was very sorry. for weeks these dictionaries poured into my mailbox; it was really irritating and they were really heavy to carry to work.
the guy disappeared and never got his dictionary and i never saw him again.

until today, when i was walking home from the train and i saw him. he was just standing there on the corner talking to a friend in front of the indian/pakistani restaurant. i turned around and made sure it was him. it was. it just so happens that i had ONE dictionary left from the several dozen that i ordered. no one bought that one. so i ran upstairs (across the street) and he waited for me and he finally got his dictionary.

the end.
